To anyone watching: treasure this. Back when I was a masters student, I had issues even to land a simple interview. After Dimitri's suggestions, I started receiving many calls for job interviews. And if you can make it with Latex, even better

Dimitri, I graduated with a Aerospace Engineering degree this May and started work at Defense Contractor (currently a System Safety Engineer analyzing hazards on fighter jets) it’s a good starting job for me gives me a good pay and benefits but I’ve really been wanting to pursue a role in finance as of the last 1-2 years. I’ve been learning a lot about quants and am really interested in pursuing that as I love math, stats and computer science. I’m decent at Python and MATLAB and can handle a bit of C++ still kind of rough in that though. I’ve bought a few books on finance and ML and in the last couple of weeks begun to try to learn more in this regard. I’m also thinking I’ll switch into a software related role at my company in the next year and possibly pursue a joint degree MBA/M.S. of Engineering in Computer Science with a AI specialization because my company will pay for it. At least that’s the plan over the next few years. Do you have any other suggestions to break into the quantitative finance realm? Do you think my current plan would be useful? Is my background in STEM and building personal projects in programming enough to break in? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions. Really love your videos by the way!

I’m glad you included a section for work projects. I frequently tell undergrads/grads that I mentor that they need to include a section that demonstrates skill (since they lack experience). It turns the interview into a conversation about projects and application as opposed to a “verbal quiz” where I just ask you questions and you answer. In our undergrad/grad development programs, the most successful applicants and the ones who I recommend for hire are the ones who demonstrate skill to me. I could care less about work experience, including internships, if you’re fresh out of school. I care about skills and ability to learn.

In the past I have been against projects as I found many students listing them as a check the box exercise. However as I have been interviewing it has been very helpful to see who really knows and has struggled with the problems.

Thank you! I wish I could have watched the video earlier. Because I have applied for like 70 companies, most of them sent me an OA and no response later after I finished that. I am pretty sure that there is something wrong with my resume. Besides, because I have three years working experience in traditional finance, I am currently pursuing a master in computer science. I want to transfer to quant finance. Do you have some suggestions for me? Thank you!

Stochastic Processes for NERDS. Interesting. So you know someone who took a class on modeling US Public K-12 school spending? That's interesting, were they trying to estimate some sort of success rate of student based on different funding levels of subjects?

Hiya Dimitri ! Super helpful video! I just completed a masters in applied maths but I have no work experience/internships. If I try to complete projects by myself, in Python or R, to put on my resume, would that be enough for quant analyst roles?

12:29 could you please elaborate on that? surely gpa is highly relevant for a field like quant?
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 11 ай бұрын
Indirectly it plays a part. For a quant job in the US you need a graduate degree. To get into a good graduate program you need a good application which includes a decent GPA from your undergrad. Now that being said, grad school typically has the lowest grade as a B- which means you are doing bad. Most students will get an A- or B+ in every class. Besides the small range of a GPA from 2.75 to 4.0, if you are in a good grad program you must be smart. The GPA doesn't mean much at this point. Some are better test takers, some have a bad day, and some teachers have a bias. But what's the different between a 3.5 and a 4.0 in a top rated grad program? Honestly, not much. The different will be in character, work ethic, and electives taken.

Im starting my first year of university this month, studying bsc actuarial and financial mathematics. I only realised recently that i want to become a quant and so have done no work experience or insight programs on quant finance and only in finance/investment banking and a few leadership experiences. I have a few work experience/insight program opportunities i want to apply to in quant finance that have deadlines this November. Is it worth applying to them with what i have or should i wait a year, rack up some experience through the societies at my university and then apply? Also, is it worth allocating some of the CATS (im from the uk, this US alternative are credits i think) i have available towards studying a new language (arabic) and taking optional modules for this and so away from optional modules that are more relevant to quant finance? essentially, is knowing another language worth more than studying a few extra quant optional modules?

I am a student doing my bachelors in computer science, but I want to be a quantitative trader. How should I go about it according to you I have decided to change my major to data size the upcoming semester(I am currently in my 4th semester). I was able to clear any math assessments I could find online for the prop firms, but I don't know how to make changes to my resume

Is it fine to make a resume of more than 1 page for quantitative research internship?
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 8 күн бұрын
@nostalgic_nitan_0807 in the US I would keep it to one page. We want to see the relevant skills not every skill you possess. In other countries where they use a CV, they tend to list everything and page count doesn't matter.

Hey Dimitri, I’m still a first year undergrad student, for relevant courses; is it acceptable to include courses I will take in the future upon finishing the course, or is that also lying?

Hi Dimitri. Thank you for such an informative content. What is your take on the actuary market in America? (does it pay well, how is it with the sponsorship compared to the quant jobs)
@Philgob
@Philgob 11 ай бұрын
I’ll give you my take as an actuary. Pay: pretty good and more stable, but smaller than quant (60-90k EL, 100-200k senior analyst, 200+ with 5ish years of exp). This is given you progress and finish exams. Sponsorship: less common EL Market: Booming at every single level. EL is a bit competitive but after your first role you’ll be recruited left and right.

I can't really comment as I don't work in the actuarial space.

Hi Dimitri I´m a Huge fan from Brazil. I am currently participating in a challenge for undergraduate students in quantitative trading. I must write a report to present my strategy to the bank managers. Any tips on some topics that must be in this report? What would will probably impress these managers ?
@DimitriBianco

I don't work investing side but I would expect a risk adjusted return, back testing, and a clear explanation on why the strategy works and how you would monitor the strategy to determine when it needed to be replaced.

How did you fund your masters degree
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 10 ай бұрын
This would make a good video but here is the short answer. I worked part-time and took on massive student loans. My wife and I both got masters at the same time and we took out $160,000. That being said, we paid them off in 5 years, so it was a good investment.

What would you recommend to someone who is studying physics at undergrad in terms of the experience section. Perhaps learning some of these models and applying them in small projects just to put on the resume? or is this a waste of time. Would you want to interview someone with no projects or experience?
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 11 ай бұрын
You need to show case the skills and in most competitive markets a graduate degree is required. If you haven't watched my math for undergrads video, you should. As a physics students you should well prepare for a quantitative grad degree. As for projects, I would pick one that interests you as this would help you determine if quant finance is interesting for you or not.
