In this video, I briefly give a description of what the illumination and dimmer wires are for...and what to hook up (in my application...and most that I've come across.) The installation involves a Hikity (NOT SPONSORED) touch screen stereo with their harness, and an aftermarket wire harness (Harmony audio...NOT SPONSORED) and how and what wires I specifically spliced together and which I didn't;-)

@@generalsteam1120 my recommendation is to go ahead and not hook them up together and just wrap them up separate and not Oakland together at all. This is the exact scenario that I made the video for because a lot of the time, if you hook those together, you created short. The radio will still work as intended except you might not have the dimmer come on when you switch on your headlights. But as a disclaimer, always check with a qualified professional, as I am just some guy on the internet:-)

what if on the car side i have Orange illumination, and Orange and white dimmer. and on the head unit i have 2 wires both marked as "illumination backlight" but 1 is Orange, and the other is green? do i connect the 2 solid Orange wires, then just assume that the green one on the head unit is the dimmer and connect it to the Orange and white dimmer from the car? will doing this cause any problems if they are supposed to be connected the opposite way?

More help please. I have a orange wire that is marked Illumination/Dimmer. This wire is comming out of the aftermarket Head unit. There is no orange or orange and white on my factory wire harness. What do I attach this orange wire to? As of now with it not attached I have no lit buttons at night. (Makes it difficult to operate) Can I hook that wire up to the accessory power? My factory harness also doesnt have a blue wire. I have a blue wire on the aftermarket head unit. With out the blue wire hooked to anything. I have no fm or am signal. Can that wire also be run off the accessory power? Please help....

My problem was my factory harness had the dimmer wire the cheap head unit didn’t so I left the dimmer disconnect. Now the problem was when I turned on my headlights my dash looks washed out. It’s like the bulbs are brighter turning my nice green display into a light blue. Thoughts

Hey Rob, I would try disconnecting the Illumination wire also (they are sometimes not needed in install either)...and if that does not help, go back over your connections to make dang sure they are connected and are not grounding out on anything do to exposure. I believe that would be a good place to start. Hope that helps. I know wiring issues can make you want to break something...just don't let it be your stereo;-)

I have a 07 pontiac G5 which uses a interface so, after trying to save money, I purchased 2 or 3 until I got a interface that worked correctly & my sterio worked however, the dabs(warning chimes & turn signals) unit does not function with this interface plus there is now switched 12v so, I ran a fuse tap to a switched circuit! However, I cannot figure out how to make this radio dim at night time? Any & all advice is welcomed!

Ok, what I'm going to guess is that the wire that you mated with head unit wire was actually dimmer wire and head unit wire was illum...check fuse, replace, and then leave those unhooked but capped so they don't short on something...let me know how it goes!

Do you know what is going on or how to fix this?

Hey BillyzTube...sorry to get back with you so late! definitely sounds like there are a couple of wires connected to wires that are not supposed to be mated together. That is the problem with doing your own splicing together and not using an aftermarket harness (unless you do this kind of job a lot). My guess is to pull head unit out again, go back to research drawing board (Internet), and try and find your factory wiring schematic again, and try seeing if there is something that you are missing as far a s what wire goes to what. Hope that helps, and hopefully by now you got the problem fixed. Let me know how it went;-)

My aftermarket radio doesn't have any orange wire for illumination or for dimmer but my factory harness does where should I connect the factory wires to? it has both
@hurstysgarage
@hurstysgarage 2 жыл бұрын
If the aftermarket wire harness has a wire that is specifically for illum. (but not the orange color cause sometimes they are different), then hook up the illum to the illum on the factory harness, and then tape off the dimmer (or cap it off...just don't use). If there is none for the aftermarket, then tape off both the illum. and dimmer separately on the factory, and do not use...they are not necessarily needed. Let me know how it goes Ja Chavez, and THANK YOU FOR watching and comment.

Thanks for the videos . I will doing one these Android decks on my 2010 Ridgeline soon here ... as for the dimmer wire you left out so that’s not an option at all then it’s either dimmer or illumination? Also what’s your experience w the head unit and iPhones etc for (car play ) etc?
@hurstysgarage
@hurstysgarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jorge...thanks for comment:-)...Yes, on this head unit, I left dimmer out because it is not needed. The radio has an option to manually go brighter or dimmer if you want. And, it also automatically gets a signal to dim when you turn on your headlights (just does not respond to signal from vehicles dimmer dile knob). And, not to familiar with iphone because I've always had an android device...but this unit has an option to connect via your Iphone, but is not specifically set up to use carplay and I would purchase this one if you want to take full advantage of what your phone and a true apple carplay head unit would allow. My next video is going to go over most of the features I can use on...but I have an Android (LG stylo 4). Hope this helps:-)

Oh, and if you know what wire is the actual dimmer wire from factory harness...you can absolutely hook that up to dimmer wire from head unit (as well as the illumination wire from factory or aftermarket harness to head unit harness, but spliced altogether on same circuit)...just make sure you know that is dimmer wire from factory harness for certain!

Do you have any idea what to do with the key 2 wire? I have no exposed wires but keep blowing fuse 6
@hurstysgarage
@hurstysgarage Жыл бұрын
Shoot Melissa, I'm sorry that is happening to you...I know how frustrating that can be! My first step is to always try the obvious things first (which it sounds like you did, but just double check), and make sure each wire is going to its correct mating wire. Then find out what fuse #6 goes to exactly to give you an estimate of what is "tripping". Normally, those Key 1 and 2 wires are for your steering wheel controls, and there is usually a Key-GRND also that needs to be mated to ground wire if using key 1 or 2 to prevent fuse "blowing". Otherwise, you might need a converter like an ASWC1 to convert signal. Those are some of the things I can think of off the top of my head. Let me know how it goes!

Any question is a GOOD question:-) Technically, you do not need to hook up the illumination wire for lights to work on some units, but to answer your question directly...my understanding is that it is POSITIVE and it is a variable power because the dimmer switch on your dash is variable. hey there. My new car stereo has 1 orange wire, and my aftermarket harness has 2 one for illumination and one for dimming. I connected all 3 at first and it worked but my gauge cluster lights didn’t come on or my dash lights. I then disconnected the dimming wire and I checked all fuses and everything and everything seemed fine but my lights still weren’t working. I then got a check engine light and SRS light because my stereo tapped into a different part of the car. I just need to know what to do with the orange and white striped dimming wire
@hurstysgarage
@hurstysgarage Жыл бұрын
Hey Aryan...that's exactly why I made the video, because I've been in your shoes. If your aftermarket stereo wire is marked "dimmer", then hook up dimmer to dimmer wire on harness. But most likely, it is marked illumination, and it should be mated to the illumination wire...then the dimmer extra wire gets capped separately and not hooked up. But as a disclaimer ***make sure you consult a qualified technician about this***

Why these devices don't have dimmable backlights is beyond me. This would have been the FIRST feature I would have worked out. When you get a factory radio, you 'get what you get', but most factory units have dimmers that work in concert with the rest of the dash lighting. Why they skip this on aftermarket radios is just dumb. Even if they added a manual backlight adjustment that would be something. But most don't. The built in brightness controls don't do enough to compensate for night driving. You pretty much have to resort to an add-on app to get something that's acceptable. It's kludgy at best.
@hurstysgarage
@hurstysgarage 2 жыл бұрын
I agree totally 6pgregma...the only thing that saves me from being "totally blind" at night is the feature when you slide down on top of screen that says notify and setting...you can turn screen to "off", and radio or music still plays, but screen goes pitch black. Hope that helps.

@hurstysgarage
@hurstysgarage 2 жыл бұрын
Ok Bdub, I would try 2 things first...make sure connections are all connected to the right wires, then make sure none are touching (simple things first). If that doesn't help, then try hooking up stereo to a vehicle that you know the existing stereo works, if it is that important for you to use that one, because it sounds like the faceplate/unit is bad, especially if there is no sound. I have a video on how to hook the stereo up to a home conversion to be able to plug it in to an outlet so you could check it that way to be sure.

How to find the power on Toyota car stereo 2014
@hurstysgarage
@hurstysgarage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Martin...you will have to use some type of 12v power circuit supply detector (make sure it is grounded before using as to not blow a fuse), so you can see what wire is "active" when vehicle is on. If you are trying to find the wire on the actual head unit itself...I suggest you try and find a website on the Internet that has a wiring guide specific for your year Toyota, and the model of the head unit. Sometimes you can free access to Chilton Manuels that have those schematics, online from your local Library. Good place to start anyways. THANKS FOR WATCHING, and let me know how it goes please:-)

Steve, some radios aren't designed to be compatible with factory harness wire to do that. If you hook illum to dimmer wire, a lot of times radio won't work correctly. Some don't need to have wires connected at all because they have a baclight adjuster for that. You can try, I just don't want to see you blow a fuse or worse...but if you are confident in your wiring skills and no your head unit and vehicle harness well, then by all means, give her a go...I just show you how I was taught and from some experience (I'm not a guru though 😉) Let me know how it goes though ok:-)

What means "key 1" and "key 2"???
@hurstysgarage
@hurstysgarage 2 жыл бұрын
GND Key1, Key2 Basically, the head unit produces 5V from Key 1 or 2 then when grounding it makes the loop so that when you press a button on your steering wheel, then the head unit detects the appropriate voltage drop and reacts to that. Long story short...for steering wheel controls:-)
