Awesome, great to see real dinghies sailing, not floating caravans claiming to be dinghies . I had to hold onto my armchair surfing that wave !

That was great Bruce. It reminded me of sailing in the mouth of the Richmond River at Ballina in our Tropic 520 TS with a mate on the helm who was a keen surfer. It was blowing nw and I was working the sheet while he helmed us onto the waves. Short story; he caught a monster against my advice with me calling keep it straight while we surfed towards the bridge. We did a beautiful left hand bottom turn, ran along the face and peeled off. I told him he was supposed to keep it straight which he said he couldn't. We'd folded the rudder cheek at right angles and snapped off the 1 'blade. Best surf ever we both reckoned. So, yours brought back memories.

Catching that first wave was a stroke of genius to keep ahead of that F 18 fighter that was closing in on you. I thought you were planning an attack on a submarine for a moment, but you pulled out at the last second. May I commend you on your decision making. I was crew on a Lazy E many years ago. We attempted an attack on a submarine in a 25+ knot breeze with me on wire. That resulted in a loss of rig, a half mile or so paddle to shore and about a three mile walk back to get the car. Both the skipper and I agreed that it was a once in a lifetime surf. We don't know what happened to the sub. I suspect that the depth charger that I dropped as I swung forward of the bow, with the rig following me, might have sunk it. God knows, I was three pounds lighter.

Ha yeah it was a bit like that. I like the comparison but I was happy to come out unscathed.

seems, no matter where you go, the rats of the waterways are there...(jetskis).. love that you took on the swells, shows that Dinghy's are capable, in the right hands. oh, btw, dinghy surfing could be a thing hahaha. Frank From Sydney

I don’t think a reef would have saved you from the surf. Surfing happens, embrace the joy. Well done for holding it together. Now get out and do it again.😁

You’re right there!A reef would have made it a lot better going out into the breeze though.Don’t worry surfing is what I do if you have watched my other offshore videos,this one just took me by surprise. Thank you for the comment 🙏BTW any relation to the Robin Lee Graham from “The Dove”?

@@brucedyson-smith459 hope you enjoy lots more surfing, oh and sailing of course. Sadly no relation to Robin Lee Graham. Dove was a wonderful story. I will look forward to seeing more of your videos, thanks for your reply. Fair winds (would know, the kind that just about don’t need a reef. 😁

I had that same experience except my rudder was broken and I was spun around. I managed to fire up the engine and power back out into the surf and enter a different bay with calmer waters. At least now I know how it would have went had I had steering. 😅

Yes that is the worry that your rudder won’t handle the pressure.Sounds like you were lucky not to capsize.

Have you ever capsized the Daysailer? I did and it was nasty. Should it happen to you, have a rescue boat nearby. You cannot right the boat by yourself, for sure.
@brucedyson-smith459
@brucedyson-smith459 3 ай бұрын
Actually yes I have capsized mine 3 times.Once on purpose to see if I could self save the other 2 times were accidental. My boat has more flotation in the bow by way of a sleeping platform which is tanked. I have heard people saying they can’t be righted single handed but I didn’t have that much problem with mine.My mast is also sealed which floats and stops the boat from turtling. Cheers Bruce.
