Joyrider TV is one of the best channels on KZfaq for catamaran sailing tutorials, maintenance, Q+As and great small cat sailing content.
Whether you sail a Hobie, Nacra, Aclass, acat, Prindle, Hurricane, Dart, Windrush, Tornado, Unicorn, F18, F16, Supercat, Thundercat, Dragoon or even a Minicat, you'll find something here to help you. The Laser is a highly popular family of small one-design sailing dinghies using the same common hull and interchangeable rigs with different sail areas. The Laser is designed to be sailed single handed although class rules permit two sailors. Bruce Kirby designed the Laser in 1970 with an emphasis on simplicity and performance.
The Laser is one of the most popular yacht classes in history. As of 2018, there are more than 215,000 boats worldwide. It is an international class with sailors in 120 countries, and an Olympic class since 1996. A commonly cited reason for its popularity is that it is robust and simple to rig and sail, while also providing very competitive racing due to the very tight class association controls which eliminate differences in hull, sails and equipment.
The Laser hull can be fitted with different interchangeable rigs with varying sail area and similar parts. This allows for a wide range of sailors to sail and compete in a range of wind conditions despite the Laser's small ideal crew weight range for a given rig. Three rigs are recognised by the International Laser Association: original Laser standard with a sail area of 7.06 m²; the Laser Radial with a sail area of 5.76 m²; and the Laser 4.7 with a sail area of 4.7 m².[1][2] Other 'Laser' branded boats with different designs are also available. Examples include the Laser 2 and Laser Pico.
The Laser's hull is made out of Glass Reinforced Plastics. The deck has a foam layer underneath for strength and buoyancy. The daggerboard is removable for storage and transport. The dinghy is manufactured by independent companies under licence in different parts of the world, including Performance Sailcraft Australia (Oceania) and Performance Sailcraft Japan.

Definitely worth a shot with the full rig. The beauty of the laser is yes racing, but also just developing the technical feel for the boat. It's so basic that you can try anything with sail shape/controls to see what sticks, and the principles you learn are great for racing in any other class, because it's ALL about adaptability to the conditions

One of the best days of my life. My first solo sail. Boy Scout Camp Wente, CA, 1987. My first solo sail and it was on a Laser. I was on that boat every afternoon for two weeks after that. I get the argument of "not trying to sail it perfectly, but rather seeing if it's fun". However, for dingy boats the kicker (boom vang) plays a major role in the amount of phisical work you do. Thats why we, laser sailor, use the vang a lot often, it depowers the sail by flattening it (in fact it's way better to thigten the kicker in a "block to block" fashion as the other controls will only affect the depth position (downhaul) and the deepness (outhaul) of the sail as fine tuners). Correctly trimming the kicker will lead to a much more fun ride in the lasers. Apart from this, great content!!!
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the explanation. That makes it all very clear. The kicker will certainly be engaged next time out!

How can this be anything but fun? It's simple and easy to learn. Having to work is a plus for fun in my book. Laser sailing isn't a pleasure cruise on 50ft yacht, it's a water sport. The only other boat that is more fun (defined as simple easy to learn) is a sunfish because it is just the sail and 1 control rope. I learned to sail on sunfish and lasers. A fun game we played was "sink the ship". You sail close to another boat and your partner jumps on their boat and capsize them

Easy boat to sail, difficult boat to master, also affordable and quick and easy to set up. I think it's important for every sailor to sail one of these or a similar single handed boat at some point in their career, because it's all down to you with no one else to blame. You will also race in big fleets with close tactical racing, where you will learn a lot. Obviously being an Olympic class has a lot to do with their popularity and I think for most people, unless you're aiming for that top tier, it's good for them to move onto other more challenging classes after a while.

Something to watch out for in the Laser is the infamous 'death roll' on runs or excessively broad reaches, you've really got to be careful about how you trim the sail and indeed the boat to avoid it in heavy weather. Too much vang or not enough mainsheet on a run is a recipe for capsizing. It's sometimes also helpful to deliberately lean the boat over to windward to put the CoE of the sail closer to the middle of the boat.

I use two different GPS watches: 1 - Timex Ironman Global Trainer - very good as it’s really simple, you can customise what information you are being given so that you can use it effectively for different sports. Now discontinued but you can find them on ebay. I just had a quick look, this is the best deal i could find: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TIMEX-Ironman-Global-Trainer-GPS-ANT-HRM-Heart-Rate-Monitor-Running-Watch-NEW/372367506997?epid=1062700174&hash=item56b2d53e35:g:ZAsAAOSwq~tZXAIA 2 - Locosys GW60 - the official watch of the GPS windsurf speedsailing association. More complex than the Timex but you get more statistical data such as speed over 2, 10 , 20 seconds or 500 meters. here is that one - www.locosystech.com/en/product/gps-watch-gw-60.html here is the video where I did a comparison between the different GPS’ Hobie 16 onboard - gps speed test kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pc98atmj17jNn30.html

For the upwind in this condition you want the kicker pulled until the two blocks on the boom and on the traveler touch, the cunningham also must be pulled as hell , it moves forward the belly of the sail and so sail is more efficient and the tendency of the boat of heading up is reduced finally, outhaul must be regulated based on the conditions of the waves by easing it a bit in high wave conditions and pulling it on flatter seas, upwind in this case in general must be very tighten varing it on the basis of what i wrote

@RockinOn217
@RockinOn217 3 жыл бұрын
“Boom vang”, also called the “kicker”. It pulls the boom down, which pulls on the leech of the sail. A Laser sailboat likes a lot of vang when going upwind to get speed.
@SportSoulLife
@SportSoulLife 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. When you sheet out the boom should only move sideways, not up at all. Sheet it in completely (block to block) pull out all slack in the kicker and some 3 cm more. Remember to release the kicker before going downwind or you will be buying a new mast (been there done that) 😉
