In today's video, we're sharing our experience dining at the Jules Verne restaurant in the Eiffel Tower. The dining clips were filmed during our trip to Paris last October and I thought I'd better get it edited and launched since we are headed back to Paris today, June 11, 2024.

As a French, I can say that this restaurant is the typical tourist trap ! There are so many better and far cheaper restaurants elsewhere in Paris and the rest of France.

We had an amazing meal at the Jules Verne years ago. We went to Paris for New Years and the day of our reservation it was snowing and the Eiffel Tower was closed to the public. We enjoyed an amazing meal of many courses. I mentioned to our waiter that I was disappointed the tower was closed but that I was enjoying the view from our window table. After our meal, the maitre d’ brought us through security to the observation deck and we were able to enjoy the view from the top all by ourselves. An experience I will never forget.

It's definitely not a tourist trap! I had the opportunity to visit last month, and let me tell you, the whole experience was absolutely unforgettable. The views were breath-taking, the staff was incredibly professional and well-trained, and the quality of the desserts and meals was simply amazing! Trust me, this is something you must experience at least once in your lifetime. It's definitely worth a visit, and I'm already planning to go back again next time :)

Thank you for your honest review. I am sorry to hear of your experience with the staff. My husband and I just returned from a visit to Paris. We can highly recommend a dinner cruise in the evening aboard Le Calife. The food, ambiance and staff were all exceptional. It was our wedding anniversary, and when they brought our dessert, they lit candles, and the staff and all of the fellow diners wished us Happy Anniversary. It was our favourite meal in Paris!

My husbad is french, and for them, wine with a meal, a fancy meal at that, is mandatory LOL. They cannot fathom having such a fabulous meal without wine. My father in law had a restaurant in France and they make their money on the alcohol. The restaurant does not make any money on just the food, it's all about the alcohol. You not ordering any alcohol clearly pissed them off. Add to that the snooty Parisian manners, and well, there you have it. I am glad I saw this video though. I would never go to that restaurant after your experience.

As an American in Paris in 1969 while a fashion illustrator in NYC, I felt lucky to just get a great crepe suzette sprinkled with Grand Marnier and granulated sugar on the Eiffel Tower! I was 20 at the time and the bigger restaurant there was closed then! Had so much fun though, I went up there twice! Still love my Instamatic photos of those great giant wheels that pulled the elevators up! Now they've high teched the tower more. I ate at the famous restaurant, La Tour D'argent, an over 400 years old restaurant which was tres expensive even then! Can't imagine what the prices must be now in beautiful Paris which reminded me of a sparkling glass of champagne all lit up at night from the Bateaux Mouche. "I left my heart" in Paris many moons ago~ merci beaucoup!♥💔

Thanks for your video! My husband and I just got back from a trip to France, where we had the five-course lunch at the Jules Verne. Our experience was quite different from yours. Sometimes, that’s just the way things go. And these things are, to a certain extent, subjective. We did each order a glass of wine, but that was it. No bottle of wine for us. So our drink order was quite modest, with no attitude from the sommelier. Our waitstaff was lovely-helpful, courteous, with no attitude there, either. We did love the food, too. I lived in France for a year, many years ago, and have since gone there several times. So--many meals consumed. I would consider our meal here to be in the top tier, though maybe not the best of the best. I would call it excellent. Regarding the seating…we were lucky enough to snag a window seat, so had an amazing view. I do agree with you that the tables were a bit close to each other. We could hear snatches of a conversation one table over, between a diner and the sommelier, that went on forever. One amusing “drinking” story, that happened at another upscale restaurant we went to many years ago. Before the meal, we’d gone on a wine tour, and so did not order drinks with our meal. Before we knew it, the chef/owner plopped himself down on a seat at our table, and asked us if we were Mormon! As you know, drinking wine with meals is so much a part of French culture, they sometimes have a hard time imagining an alcohol-free meal. There’s no excuse, however, for a sommelier with an attitude, as in your experience.

They had mocktails on the menu you showed us in the video. The servers should have directed you to it. I went to Paris several years ago with an American friend who was visiting me in Italy. She really wanted me to go with her to Paris. I have been there a few times before except in Montmartre. So she agreed we would stay in a hotel there. What I remember most were the two dinners we had in two different restaurants nearby just filled with French locals. They were on a classic Parisian narrow, cobbled street. The food was amazing, but the tables were so close together, a couple next to us must have understood English because the man leaned over to me and said in a very thick French accent, "You do know what THAT is don't you?" while pointing his finger towards my razor clam (on a seafood medley plate). His finger was just millimeters away from touching my food on my plate. I responded "Oui, je le sais, mais merci beaucoup." haha. I'll never forget that. And the price was reasonable. Nice ambiance, white table cloths, good service etc. But you need to learn how to keep your elbows in while eating. 😉

Never made it to the Jules Verne. My wife loved Paris and she would just stand in our hotel room and look at the Eiffel when it lit up at night. Many beautiful memories. Me too. I always appreciate KJ&Tony's observations--very thoughtful. Yes, that's the going price for famous restaurants without drinks and double that amount is not uncommon. I try to avoid Michelin star places because I abhor fussy food, sitting for a long time, pretending that I am entertained, and having to pay that much for a pas mal time. The Jules Verne interior looks oppressive and uninviting--obviously not styled by one of France's famous designers and why not? Maybe it should be demoted to 1 star. Helas, Paris is filled with delights so experiencing Jules Verne is not necessary.

One thing to remember, the European service is more attuned to techniques and elegance of serving more than becoming your friends. From the pics you shared it looked as it was a very creative presentation of all items served. The servers' lively-hood does depend on gratuities. I prefer an honest frown than a fake smile. I don't go to a restaurant to make the servers my friend. I also hate the idea when they show up with their hand held computer shoving it to your face silently and psychologically demanding tips. I hate the tipping culture of USA.

I’m sorry your experience didn’t match the price tag. I’m married to a French guy from Paris & have been going back & forth forever. We also have lots of high-end French chef friends. One thing about the French is that they view their restaurants as their domain & unlike in the US, the customer isn’t always right. Wait staff are professionals who aren’t tipped & my guess is that the sommelier felt insulted. It’s a completely different culture from ours. For example, I don’t eat beef or pork, but I don’t ask for adjustments to menus there. I just find a place that offers what I’ll eat. They’re not going to adjust to your needs. I’m glad you love Paris. It’s a wonderful city. We just came back from there.

We were seated with another couple, the waiting staff were efficient but we almost got the feeling they begrudged serving us. We were seated far back and like you could not see the view. I am outraged by the way you were treated! Your assumption is correct - you were branded by the sommelier as "thrifty" and the message was transferred to the waitstaff,as well, hence the attitude. If I were you, I would write to the restaurant's management and describe your experience. As a paying customer, American tourist or not, you deserve respect. Thank you for this post! We celebrated our 30th anniversary in the other restaurant that was on the 2nd level. There were choices of a real meal, and you could pay extra for a table near the window. (We didn't pay extra) I had mentioned that we were celebrating our anniversary and the restaurant gave us a free window table to help make our visit nicer. The food was good, the view was spectacular and the service was so nice! I was thinking about whether to go back for our 40th, but wasn't sure. We have had better meals in tiny restaurants in Paris. Maybe your expectations were too high? I NEVER have any high expectations for anything now. So, sorry about your experience. Luckily when we went up the Eiffel with my parents in 1988, we opted to eat instead at the lower restaurant -- La Belle Helene. The prices were reasonable, and we ordered a la carte -- pretty much just the roast chicken. We had OK views and just saw the fireworks when we got back down since it was 14 July 1988.

So good to see you again. Hope you had a very happy birthday 🎉 The food looked great but I think it was trop Cher. No tablecloths for that price? Was it romantic? I have had wonderful meals at elegant places in Lille. The treatment you had was not great and that you were seated so close to other tables is a shame. I don’t think I would ever go there. I think that is how they treat Americans in many French places but not all. They know you will not be back so they don’t have to be nice.

Have just found your videos and enjoyed them and will follow and although I have had about five trips to Paris, I would never pay 1,000 euros for an OK dinner although my husband and I have eaten in a restaurant in the Eiffel Tower and gone to the top and had champagne. Our style is the small, intimate street restaurant with extremely tasty french food and pleasant wait staff, one star, maybe. Also on several trips to Ft. Pierce, Florida, I would never miss going to a restaurant in Vero Beach, situated around a small swimming pool and facing the magniificent Atlantic Ocean with great shrimp and crab salads and very tasty daiquiris and affordable. Each to their own taste. Thanks for taking me along.

Bonjour KJ! Thank you for sharing your experience. Were the tables closer together than at other French (or European in general) restaurants? Because you know that they are closer together than in the U.S. Was/were the family next to you and/or the couple on the other side speaking English? I hope that you will share your birthday dinner trip to Le Procope with us and I also hope that y'all will try restaurants like Le Meurice Alain Ducasse or La Tour D'Argent. If you are dining at a place with a view such as La Tour, you might want to try lunch (depending on the time of year and thus the lighting) so that you can better see. I am glad that you experienced connection with the other youtubers while you were at the Jules Verne restaurant.

It is none of the staff's business as to why someone does not drink alcohol. A woman could be expecting or there can be other health issues with regard to consuming intoxicating beverages. It could also be a religious conviction, which would be none of the waitstaff's concern.

The reason why it turned snooty is because an overpriced place like this makes most of their money on alcohol. The snootiness comes from that good ole' French arrogance which you will find in many highly starred restaurants as they think they know better than the client and they get an attitude if you don't give in. I'm sure he went back to the waiter's station and said. " Il y a des ricans à table XXX qui ne boivent pas" (Ricain is pejorative for Americans) And that set the scene for a chain reaction. Believe me after almost 50 years here I know this attitude but it doesn't mean you will find it everywhere. However I'm perplexed as at 11:26 on the wine cocktail list. Cocktail sans alcohol. Why didn't you ask for that. No alcohol. The wait staff was not friendly because the place is a factory assembly line. No matter how the staff act they know that the restaurant will always be full so they really don't care about you. Unless you are a premium guest that comes often or some sheik etc you can be treated as untermenschen. it wasn't a bad day believe me. Everyday is a bad day for some waiters in France. The more you go to these starred restaurants, the more you will experience this. The other KZfaqrs you met get more social media exposure and that's why they got special table. You others can eat cake. I had a Japanese client and his wife who ate there and it was over 1000€ Please visit local family restaurants in the countryside if you travel outside. You'll get a nice welcome and the food is excellent. I can eat in this kind of restaurant and I will never do it. No thank you. But thank you for your honesty and each trip will teach you a little more about the real France.
@kjandtonylovefrance

Thank you for your feedback. You, like many others, commented about the cocktails sans alcohol that was listed on the menu. Yes, yes and yes, it's not like I did not see it. But when I asked the waiter and mentioned a few of my favorites... even when I asked if they had something like a Shirley Temple, he was No! to everything, was gruff and kept saying we don't have anything like that. When I asked about the cocktails sans alcohol he said they had juice or sodas. The sommelier definitely said something to the other waiters assigned to our table because their attitudes were similarly "out of joint." It's especially upsetting when someone is paying so much money for an experience and you are treated with that attitude. We have never been treated that way in any other restaurant in Paris.

With all due respect, if you're going to have a channel about traveling in Paris, you should know two rules for getting excellent service. First, speak french, and if you can't, then apologize for speaking english. Second, don't violate their cultural norms. One can't expect to get one's own way all the time like in the US. It isn't Florida and the Parisians want to keep it that way. You could have apologized to the sommelier that you can't, unfortunately, drink alcohol and then ordered one of the alcohol-free drinks on the menu. I think I heard that you tried to order a mojito in a Michelin 2-star restaurant in Paris? I'm surprised they didn't ask you to leave the premises!
@kjandtonylovefrance
@kjandtonylovefrance 15 күн бұрын
If you have followed our channel at all, then you would know that we are proponents of speaking French and do apologize when it becomes necessary to speak English (due to our limited capability). I did ask about other non-alcohol options, and it was limited to juices, according to the waiter. I have ordered my virgin mojito at many other fine dining restaurants, and it's never been a problem. Also, you are making so many assumptions, especially your comment about telling the waiter I "can't" drink?! How ridiculous is that!! I don't drink, period. And, btw, there is nothing about your post that conveys ANY respect. Bottom line is that we were eating at a Michel star restaurant and expected to have exemplary service. Perhaps, however, I don’t understand the "rules" of Michelin Star restaurants. Does that mean the wait staff gets to treat you disrespectfully and throw you out of the restaurant if you make some sort of faux pas? If so, I never want or need to eat at another Michelin Star restaurant ever again!! But somehow, I think you may not have your facts straight, and your post sounds judgemental, condescending, and mean-spirited 😔
@dianegenx
@dianegenx 13 күн бұрын
The act of saying "with all due respect" doesn't give you the green light to talk down to another person. Your ignorant comments make it clear that you do not know this couple well enough to have made the (entirely inaccurate) assertions that you have made against them. Also, to suggest they should have APOLOGIZED to the sommelier because they don't partake in alcohol is especially ludicrous. Not everyone drinks alcohol, not everyone eats seafood, or dairy, or whatever! People have allergies, people have adverse reactions. This is what real life is. That sommelier was being a dick. And so are you.

I'm sorry, but your video shows everyone how to Fail when dining in Paris. Would you ever think to visit a pâtisserie in France and tell them you don't eat butter or any dairy products? And yet, you both seemed so surprised that the Sommelier was offended. The truth is you shouldn't have booked a table at any fine dining restaurant. There are plenty of bistros and brasseries in Paris that will cater to tourists who want to drink a coke with their meal.

We do not agree with you at all! We have been to many fine dining restaurants and not treated like that. There is no excuse for that level of rude behavior. Especially when one is paying top dollar.
