Mick Thomson and Dino have the meanest right hands, in my opinion. Their downpicking fast is insane and takes ALOT of constant practice, you just have to play until it burns and keep going.

When I was learning as a teenager in the 90s, I would electrical tape my pinky finger to ring finger so my pinky could play power chords. Worked well to train it. Fast forward, Jeff Loomis sharp picks helped me sweep pick and have better attack!

Ankle weights on the wrist! It’s like Gene Hoglan, but rhythm guitar. Bad ass. Ha ha. I learned how to pick fast by trying to keep up with Metallica, Sepultura, and Fear Factory albums. No KZfaq back then. Just guitar magazines. I had horrible technique for years, but eventually figured it out. Dino is a huge inspiration for me! Cheers!

What makes Dino so unique is not the speed of his picking, but how fucking tight his playing is. Some Fear Factory songs had 4, 6 tracks of the same riff and it sounds just like 1 single track.

@TheImprovisations

Seems a bit unnecessary to have all those tracks then?
@Sphereal
@Sphereal Жыл бұрын
@@TheImprovisations Not at all: the heaviness stems from having different tracks of the same riff, recorded through different setups.
@TheImprovisations
@TheImprovisations Жыл бұрын
@@Sphereal But having it sound like it was one single track and still expect that to bring some heaviness into the mix? That does not seem correct. I mean, what fattens it up is that there are actual differences between the tracks. Otherwise it would just be louder I guess, or perhaps suffer from phase issues and instead become weaker.
@rollforeverderbs
@rollforeverderbs Жыл бұрын
@@TheImprovisationsNot everyone stacks identical rhythm parts but there is value in doing it. It will give the rhythm guitars more presence and body in the mix. Back in the 90's they would layer identical rhythms as well as identical drum parts at times. A good example of how effective it can be is Metallica's self-titled. Whether you like the music or not, the production is pretty huge for the time. Bob Rock did a lot of layering. I think I remember hearing that they used like 8 rhythm tracks for Sad But True. Using 1 or 2 rhythm tracks and turning up the volume will not give it the same fullness and power in the mix, of course depending on your tones. With the wrong tones, stacking identical rhythms can just make your mix muddy. The playing has to also be extremely tight.

guitar tech at a store told me about this and since ive always thought and experimented with different sounds, especially with guitars there the pieces are made of bone, metal, plastic for the nuts because it vibrates different, same with the picks

Pick gauge really matters to me. I don't use anything beyond a 0.70mm anymore. (starting using that because Meshuggah used it in the their 7 string days, so I don't wanna hear about it being flimsy, it obvious ain't.) 1.0 and beyond dulls the grind I get out of my picking technique. I built up my picking speed and tightness by playing to Demanufacture everyday back then.
