Today, let's test another 6 cheap USB phone chargers. Let's see what's inside and how safe (or dangerous) they are. Some of them with schematic. Low quality or fake chargers may be quite dangerous. They can cause a fire or an electric shock and electrocution death.

They probably are, don't buy chargers from sellers online, only buy them locally, because your store most likely has a system in place to check if the charger is nice or dodgy, if it is dodgy it won't be sold, but on online websites, there is no such thing, so people can simply lie and most likely, get away with it.

Buying a USB tester was one of my least expensive, but most useful investments. It’s incredible when you see how many USB chargers don’t even come close to their ratings. What’s even worse, are cables that can’t supply enough current. I’ve had to go through all of my chargers and throw out the ones that don’t supply the rated current. Then, I had to mark which cables are only good for data transfer, and which ones can be used for charging. If you ever have a charging problem, don’t immediately suspect your charger. Some USB cables can barely supply 0.3 amperes, even if the charger can supply much more. I really recommend getting a USB tester. They’re only about $5, and they’ll save you a lot of headaches.

Maybe the fuse won't burn but the track will come away or something else funny or interesting will happen!

Thanks! Looking forward to see if there’s a less dodgy charger in the next batch. With all these horrible chargers one would wish that there would be an easy test for consumers so that these extremely low quality (or indeed fake) chargers could be rejected. Output power is quite easy to test and that’s a start. But output ripple and above all safety is much more difficult to test for the average consumer.

easiest way to tell is by the price and what brand it is if it's from a reputable company/manufacturer but you can't always tell by that because some claim being apple original or Samsung original but if the price seems too cheap to be true then it most likely is that's why also pay attention to the price it might be the biggest giveaway most of the time because good quality chargers will cost more of course :)

When designing a switch-mode power supply for use in information technology (IT) equipment, a typical rule of thumb is to allow an 8-mm creepage distance between primary and secondary circuits, and a 4-mm distance between primary and ground. If these dimensions are allowed for during the design stage, there is a high probability (95%) that no failure will occur with respect to creepage or clearance when the final product is submitted for test.

15:06 This Higher Voltage could be used for compensating long wire. My old original charger from Samsung Galaxy S4 also boost voltage when charging with more current, even to 5,45V. But i love this charger for it and im still using it bcs it is only one charger that boost it so much (without FC or QC) so charging is quicker around 3% (as i remember), i can use 2m cable without dropping voltage. 5,17V when charging, at the end of 2m usb cable. Other chargers even newer samsung original have voltage only about 5,01V with 2m cable.

I just love the USB power supply mentioned at 14:28, for the following: 1) The output voltage is too high: 5.89V may damage the charging circuitry of your device 2) There is no in rush limiter or fuse/fusible resistor - "that's dodgy!". 3) The primary and secondary capacitors look too close together IMO 4) The isolation distance on the board is very suspect - about 1mm 5) Those thin wires going from one side of the board to the other do not seem fit for carrying 230-240V AC 6) The capacitor in between the primary and secondary sides (for interference suppression) is not a safety Class Y1 capacitor, it is just a standard 1kV capacitor 7) Some of the components are probably too close to each other with the boards folded over as seem before the teardown 8) The transformer. I can only say: "I smell something extremely dodgy! Let's sit down and wait for it...". What that basically means is that all 3 windings are wrapped right over each other, with an isolation distance of 0.05mm - 0.005mm only! So the conclusion is: SUPER DODGY!

How does the 8-pin chip of the second charger (the one without auxiliary winding on the transformer) generate its low voltage chip power? Just look at an old post on a web site, where somebody was writing a Declaration of Conformity DOC for a charger to sell on Amazon. They were asking what standards to put on the DOC! No one was talking about where they were going to get the device tested to the standards? it seemed they thought you just need to quote the standards and you were OK to sell in the EU. i'll be surprised if any of those transformers could meet the standards for the Low Voltage Directive just due to their size. even china i believe require a standard like the LVD for safety. So not even legal to sell in their market. looking at all the transformers you have shown none would pass any safety test as the primary winding's don't have secondary insulation covering the wire up to the point where it is clear of all other winding's and under the insulation wrapping tape nice video.

you would need much more than just 10w resistor , it will dissipate 215 watt of heat if u want to drop a constant 5v at 1amp from 220v!

27:06 Huawei. That's not just your usual Chinesium, its _name brand_ Chinesium. That means that the ratings on the label wont be the usual 2X capacity, but 4X actual capacity... and a SUPER-DODGY rating. Nice!

If i buy a cheap charger i open it and look for say isolation in the windings, fuses and safety capacitors, if any one of those is missing i literally keep it open and use it as a way to tell people the dangers of electricity.

If it is good I will use electrical tape and plug it in at a safe distance, if it doesn't explode and the device still charges, I use it but with a lot of electrical tape, yeah I'm an electrician and teach people the dangers of electricity and also the dangers of lithium ion batteries, cheap cords and cheap chargers.

Actually the only non name brand chargers I have were included with devices, every charging block I bought by itself is from a name brand like Amazon (as in branded Amazon and only the ones included with fire tablets.) Apple or Samsung and a few other name brands, also from their official website or reputable sources, I don't want a potentially dangerous fake.
