Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show. January 17, 1959. Re-posted by request. Corrected low audio issue and no annoying gray bar at the bottom. This also includes the William Shatner interview that preceeded the performance.

Born July 18, 1939, Dion was 19 Years old for this performance. WOW. When I was 19, I still couldn't figure out which end of a straw to drink through.

Angelo in his Navy uniform, hey he was on the USS Cromwell Destroyer Escort, in Boston. I was on the USS Hammerberg Destroyer Escort in Boston also. Our ships were part of an Escort Squadron, Home Port Newport Rhode Island. I didn't know that until I listened to this song, how about that. And I saw them perform in my home town Bethlehem, Pa. just before joining the Navy in 1964.

On this day in 1958 {Jan. 9th} Dion & the Belmonts performed "Don't Pity Me" on late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'. About three weeks earlier on Dec. 22nd, 1958 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #40 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100. Lou Stallman, the song's co-writer, also co-wrote "Round and Round", which Perry Como took to #1 in 1957. R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012} and Sid Jacobson, the song's other cowriter, turned 83 years old this past October 20th.

Dion was the singer with a tear in his voice. All of the slow numbers they sang, especially standards, sound like church music.
@donscaptvideo3 жыл бұрын
that depends what church you go to, Don. back in the day the chords for WINNING, selling SONGS consisted of 4 chords--a release, another verse then outro. I.E. C>Am>F>G. a simple thanks for the free music lesson will sefise. :)

Another great song from their debut album. Once again, flawless harmony. When Dion was with The Belmonts, they were all at their best. Angelo was actually drafted into military service. I don't know if they gave him the choice of choosing the Navy or not. Don't know how that worked back then.

On this day in 1959* {January 9th} Dion & the Belmonts performed "Don't Pity Me" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand... At the time the song was at #40 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, that was also its peak position the chart and remained there for 1 week, and spent a total of 12 weeks on the Top 100... On the same 'Bandstand' show they also performed their next release, "A Teenager in Love", it would enter the Top 100 three months later... {See next post below}... * In an earlier post I goofed, I noted they appear on 'AB' on January 1st, 1958, should have been 1959...

I heard this for the first time on satellite radio and found the harmonies to be out of this world. What a shame this music is heard only by those of us who have access to satellite channels. Thanks so much for posting the video--loved seeing the men behind the voices. Are all the members still living?

Two Belmonts have died, one (Carlo Mastrangelo) just recently on April 4. So sad. The other names Fred Milano died in January 2012. Both deaths were caused by cancer. One Belmont and Dion are still alive.

I think that lost in all this Shatner-smooching is a wonderful doo-wop performance. Dion is incandescent as always, and the Belmonts are spot-on with the harmonies. I feel that there is no music more amazing than vocal harmony, and Dion and The Belmonts are primary examples of harmony at its best. Thank you for posting this video! What a delight! And, yes, Shatner...

There were different charts indicating the most popular songs and there was a lot of crossover between the pop chart (which included R & R, and the R & B chart, which replaced "race" music. ya know Tony, i'm glad you mentioned the damn clapping. I thought i was the only one to hear that. I found it annoying. maybe 'cause i'm a musician ? a drummer? or just maybe i believe there should be no clapping during a BALLARD. DAMN KIDS were off-tempo too. yet, i overlooked that taking into consideration the opening explanation by the sharer that the sound was remixed. I go thru that everytime w/old analog video tapes. NOTE: it was great to hear & appreciate carlo's bass vocals & the overall harmonies. have a great week AND if u get a chance come visit my 2 pages & see my 1st concert appearing w/ Carlo & Dion. in 1987.
