An example of the old Chartered Institute of Linguists' Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) exam format, highlighting good and bad practice. The mock role play shown in the video is for Polish English Law.
NOTE: This is the exam old format. Exams are now conducted online and the format for unit 1 has changed.

Am i right in assuming that 'all' examinations are now carried out on line via webinar ??? Thank you.

Yes, you are. As mentioned in the video, this was how the exams used to be carried out. It's different now and they are all conducted online. The only part you may be able to do with pen and paper is units 4 and 5, as long as you can find an examination centre that facilitates that.

@@interpretingandtranslation8389 so, how is the "whispering" part done online ??? ( I've noticed that the whispering part appears to be absent from more recent past exam papers ) thank you.

@@r.b6170 The whispering part is still there, but the format of the exam as changed slightly. Unit 1 is now divided into 2 separate parts: the first is a 20 minute role play and the second is made up of 2 whispered sections (into English and Other Language). For the whispered, you are given a recording that plays through your Zoom audio feed and you interpret simultaneously while your examiner listens.

I have watched the entire clip. The candidate seemed to have had an overall good command of English, nice delivery (clear pronounciation without a 'thick' accent) Unfortunately the devil (or merit) is in the details. It lacked proper understanding and rendition of the legal terminology. And I am surprised the clip editor/channel/exam panel made no comments on that the (very last) part of translation referring to the 'bail' which was completely inaccurate 26:36 and on. It is a common issue with Polish (and others probnably too) interpreters who have had no exposure to some legal training (here: criminal procedure) that they tend to translate legal terms verbatim or literally. The girl here completely missed the point. What was said - the accused's solicitor was going to apply for a 'continuing bail'. Which is a certain type of procedure. I.e to ask the court to release the accused from detention (remand on bail) simply put. The accused returns home and has to appear in court when summoned and observe certain (bail) conditions. Bail does not mean (necessarily or always) a payment of money (which is how it was translated), the phrase or term (statutory) of 'continuing bail' was translated as 'to continue money security or bail payment). Bail is not about payment of money. (a court lodgement can only be a part of the entire recognisance bond and money is often - in minor cases - not required at all). A proper translation would have to be 'uchylenie aresztu' (jako srodka zapobiegawczego) or 'odpowiadanie z wolnej stopy' until the time of court appearance. To translate it as 'kontynuacja kaucji' (a continuation of money bail or bail security) is a complete miss. Was there no PL/EN expert /examiner present to catch this? The following part (solicitor's caution on a possible revocation of bail) is translated as 'wycofanie kaucji' and 'zniesienie warunkow kaucji' (retraction of bail security and lifting of bail conditions). This is completely wrong!!! The solicitor is simply saying that if the bailee was to breach any of the conditions whilst on bail the court might send her back to custody (awaiting trial and verdict). It is foir the accused to understand that she has to behave, be very careful and fulfill all obligations imposed in the interim (such as may be e.g. signing at the police station, refrain from leaving jurisdiction etc) ! If not she will be arrested and put in prison. The interpeter is saying - her money security will be withdrawn and conditions lifted. Quite bizarre and no reaction from the panel!!! Sadly, but I would have to fail the candidate on this element. BTW I am a Polish national myself. And to tell you honestly I lost confidence in the quality of the DPSI qualification after watching this exam. Very lax.

Thank you for your comment. I agree with everything you said. Unfortunately most candidates lack understanding on how to tackle legal interpretation/translation. You are absolutely right - it is not just about picking the first word that comes up in a dictionary. One needs to understand the full context and focus on MEANING - not words. This is why I always recommend candidates should do a preparation course before undertaking the DPSI. On another note, regarding the term 'bail' see my video regarding some differences between Scots Law and English law, where that is one of the terms discussed.
