Every track on this album is an absolute banger and this is a great way to close it. Love Over Gold is by far is my favourite DS album.

The guitar solo is good but my favorite part of this song is that swell of Hammond B3 organ on the "organ grinder" line.

It Never Rains is one of those tracks that seeps under your skin over time... I used to feel exactly the same when I first heard it, and the ending kept me coming back... Now it is probably my 3rd favourite track on the album.... because Telegraph Road and Private Investigations are just so stunning

I think I've said it before, but Dire Straits represents a good chunk of my teenage years. I DEVOURED their music, and Love Over gold is my favorite album of theirs to this day. It's so textural thanks to the addition of Alan Clark, who recently recorded a piano album of Dire Straits music that's worth checking out. Those organ stabs are Alan's handywork, and he was the DS musical director until Mark went solo.

This is one my favorite DS songs, despite it being one of the least known.

Couldn’t agree more when you mentioned Alan and Mark match together… nice to know that someone appreciate Alan’s work on Keys in the Mid-Later-Straits Era. BTW he came out piano solo album this year reinterpret epic songs that he involved once - including many of MK’s works. Highly recommended to go for a listen.

If I remember correctly, this is about his one time girlfriend, Holly Beth Vincent, a wannabe singer who used MK to get ahead in the music business & then dropped him. He also sang about her in Romeo & Juliet.

First time I heard this, it was playing in the background, wasn’t paying much attention, and over time the mood changed and the volume increased and all of a sudden, holy crap! The guitar solo. For me, the best of the whole album. It’s an odd song, Mark is evidently ticked off about something. If that’s what it takes to get a solo like this out of him, someone needs to make him mad more often. 😊

A song about anger...and appropriately, the closing solo is angry...not to mention the swirling organ evokes anger too...a well crafted song..but, that is standard operating procedure for Dire Straits...excellent closure to their Masterpiece album

There's two guitar players "Beck and Knopfler", where I wish I had the power to crawl into their brain to see what makes them tick. IMO, I've always said country/bluegrass music produce the best musicians when it comes to the guitar. You can hear the country influences in Mark's playing, even in this song, those country flavors ring out. Best of the season to you and your JP, Cheers.

I think this song is beautiful right from the start, and to be honest i like the calm part more than the ending, that sounds a little bitter to me: you're surrounded by an angry feeling as soon as Mark stops singing and it never leaves you, I guess that's why we have a sixth album with a sweet ending song. (I have no idea if anything i said made sense, so sorry on advance if there's any mistake of any sort but i am not english)

Enjoyed their first two albums which were guitar heavy, but once they added keyboards to their sound it just lifted their game even higher in my opinion.

There is just something about the lyric "you were just a rollercoaster memory" that makes it my favourite of all time

I totally agree with you that Mark's solo is the highlight - there's a lot of variety and drama there, and his finger-picking style gives us an almost rockabilly feel at times. Beautifully underpinned by Alan's meaty organ chords. It's my favourite DS album, but for me this track is eclipsed by Telegraph Road and the brilliant Private Investigations. I have always loved this song. Got LOG on vinyl the day it was released. Immediate love for this album. It Never Rains is a slow burner. It gets into you the more you hear it. Its a moody song, with dark intentions. The song transforms from a simple sweet Dylanesque refrain into a hammond organ-driven, tragic and terrifying sea of power. At the end we ride up the waves of Mark's wah, and down the other side upon his country pickin' licks. The flanger washes over us, leaving us nauseous and quite disturbed. A hundred pairs of eyes are looking down upon Holly Vincent - in judgement. This song is spitting at her. Then washing her away.

I think the debut album is best but this is a close second for me, and I listen to this more than I do the first.

This is a good example of why DS is one of those bands that you can just play the whole album while doing other things and there's always gonna be some nice sounds popping out at you. Lyrically it sounded Dylan influenced. Thanks for the reaction!! ✌️

WOW, I completely agree with you! As much as I like Mark's singing, and his amazing lyrics just kind of put up with some boredom during the verses, to see what he would do on guitar - and MAN, was it worth the wait! This song is a sleeper, and I can see that it could become more of a fave with repeated listening! And can we talk about the fact that Mark was plenty pissed off when he wrote this tune! But he has never held back from expressing how he feels, good or bad! Enjoyed very much, Sir! Merry Kiss Moose!🎅

I like when producers allow a bit of the mechanical sounds of fingers striking keys when recording organs, particularly the Hammond B3.

Personally I see the album as a collection of cautionary parables, filled with regrets and a jaded exhaustion, yet it uses it as a backdrop for showcasing the battle to preserve wonder. This battle is presented in the form of a rock symphony. I could not be here without this album, if nothing more than to know I wasn't the only one.

Great album. I hope we get more Dire Straits on the channel. I'm a huge fan of the title track off of "Brothers in Arms". It is a very emotional song and needs to be on your list of songs that you have to hear. All the album tracks off of "Brothers in Arms" are pretty good. I'm little tired of the hits "Money for Nothing" and "Walk of Life"

Justin, I agree with you 100% about this song. This is my first time hearing it too.

I only knew their "Money for Nothing" song and music video with the "I want my, I want my MTV" Sting line, but my husband likes them and recently got their greatest and I do like their music. I liked this one. See, I was a teenager on the 80s and most of the music I discovered (aside from the Disco I knew from my childhood) was from MTV or night radio where I would listen to more rare "new wave", but my husband was a teenager on the 70s and is more into classic rock bands from that time and the 60s.

Always said about knopfler songs once the drums kick in and he stops singing you know all hell is going to break loose on that guitar 😮

Sometimes I feel I can almost hear some hints of Richard Thompson's guitar playing in Mark Knopfler's notes. Both amazing unique guitar players.

I'd like to see you react to Mark solo. He seemingly has the same synergy with Guy Fletcher and Jim Cox that he had in DS with Alan Clark but they've been playing together over twice as long. What It Is, Why Aye Man, Punish The Monkey, Let It All Go, Speedway At Nazareth, Hill Farmer Blues, Coyote, Boom Like That, Summer Of Love, Cleaning My Gun, Get Lucky, Our Shangri La, I Dug Up A Diamond, Postcards From Paraguay, Song For Sonny Liston (sorry no keys on this one just drum, standup bass and guitar), My Claim To Fame.....this is ridiculous, just listen to anything Mark has done, his lousy stands up well next to most people's best work.

This was another song Mark wrote about his ex girlfriend, Holly Vincent. Love Over Gold and Romeo & Juliet we’re the other two. The vocals are Dylan-esque, Mark thought very highly of Bob, and the style suits his voice (especially if you’ve ever heard him sing live). It’s definitely the weakest song on the album, but there are so many towering efforts on this album it’s unfair to judge this harshly by contrast. I think it is a good fit for the whole set, a relief from some of the epic levels achieved in the early tracks.

Lovely album and well balanced in my opinion I absolutely love Private Investigation and Telegraph Road, Industrial Disease is a fun song, you got your salad with Love Over Gold and a nice closer with this song. It is the weakest track, but the ending is what you remember anyway and that is stellar. All in all I think it is a very good album I still enjoy playing a lot.Their first and second album I play a lot as well because of their moodiness. First heard this band when Sultans of Swing was a hit single and played all summer on the radio. Fell in love with Mark's guitar playing right away! An fortunately there's plenty of it on this album as well :-)

Didn’t really care for it. This is where I search for a good b-side or great odd song not on any album and plop it here. I did like his fade out guitar. Get yer rest, wirk is rough, but I know it’s hard, my artist friend called last night just as I was closing my eyes for a cat nap, had to talk for a good hour, happy to… but I had to go, my eyes were getting blurry. So distinguishable & Identifiable that the melodies and performances became disposable Yet , as is customary with good yt channels, when one Scratches the Surface, one can appreciate all aspects of art, life and everything with greater enthusiasm and discernment. It’s only knock n knowall but i don’t have to like it This? I’m glad i re- listened once more. It confirms that my instinctive response all those years ago was appropriate, namely Gerry Rafferty’s voice on The Way it Always Starts make it one of MK’s ultra super songs , of which there are probably a dozen examples where even the unmistakable DS trademark Sound cannot prevent the Emotion of it All from leaving it’s Mark. The opening of the song sounds a lot like a kind of cheesy intro to a 70s sitcom, like Taxi, for instance. I think Mark tries to be a bit too much like Dylan on this track. That, in itself, isn't all that surprising, considering Dylan had an enormous impact on Mark's vocal style. (Mark also played an essential role on Dylan's album Infidels.) In my opinion, though, Mark's voice is a little more listenable to me than Dylan's. The outro defies all logic, morphing into a sort of psychedelic vibe, which has zero connection to the rest of the song. The overall structure is all over the place. It's almost as though he didn't want to return to any sort of theme he'd established, and decided to vamp on one chord for five minutes to end the song, laying in whatever soloing came to mind. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Dire Straits. This track, however, is not Mark's best work. Cool video. Cheers!

Guitar fantastic. Vocals reminiscent of Dylan but without the lyrical content. Good but not great for me but I hadn't had my second coffee yet. I shouldn't be reading the news before I listen.

Has my watched stopped, is it Saturday? Boy that dragged on. Musically a bit samey, and rather beige. And mix-wise, all seemed a little monotone. The rhythm chugging along, then the solo's barely audible above the background. Where was the contrast, the odd screeching high notes to add texture. And again with the 'War and Peace' lyrics. MK obviously loves the sound of his own voice. Well at least it's over. With the exception of 'Telegraph Road', not a lot going on on this disc.
