MTV (the station) was completely different when this song was born. Back then it was pretty much all music videos, hence Music TV. I don’t even know why it’s called MTV anymore. Just saying so younger people understand that those sales people were watching music videos.

@@racinnut77's right. Sting only gets a writing credit on this song because Mark wanted to use the tune from the song "Don't stand so close to me" he wrote and recorded as a member of The Police. ("I want my, I want my, I want my MTV" = "Don't stand so, don't stand so, don't stand so close to me".) When the band were recording the Brothers in Arms album in Montserrat they found out Sting was on holiday there and Mark invited him over to sing on the song.

It’s also a clever bit of satiric self-mockery. They were the guys moving refrigerators and color TVs for a living, working for low wages to pay the bills while hoping to make it playing nights in the music industry. When they finally did, their fans thought that what they did was too easy.

Your reactions to some of the songs which I grew up with is soooo wonderful, it always makes me smile and puts me in a good mood. Tunnel of Love and my fave Romeo and Juliet on the Making Movies album by Dire Straits are brilliant. Mark Knofler does a decent job articulating the lyrics, but for a first pass, it's probably best to read the lyrics to make sure you are getting the gist of the song. It's not that EVERY dire straits song is deep, but the lyrics typically tell an interesting story. A great long song by them is Telegraph Road. Great music and story.

Not sure if it'll raise any copyright issues or red flags for KZfaq, so perhaps on your own time & off camera, check out the official music video for this song. It was groundbreaking when it premiered in 1985, as it was one of the first ever to utilize computer graphics & animation. This was back in the day of CGI infancy so when the video aired on MTV (back when the channel actually played music videos), no one had ever seen anything like it before. By today's standards it probably comes off as very cheesy but it's still a fun video to watch and it will clearly explain the lyrics of this song more... :-)

Mark was in a store in NY. The delivery guys were talking and he wrote what they were saying while the guys were watching the monitors in the store and commenting on the music videos that were playing. True story.

So glad to see you enjoying these songs. Excellent album, the one with this song on it. The guitar on the cover says it all! Keep finding and listening to the good tunes. The days where you needed talent to get on the stage. Thanks for enjoying!

He has a vid on his channel where he plays the intro to Romeo and Juliet on that same guitar. I think it’s called “Mark Knopfler” on Guitars”.

This song was remastered later with a change of lyrics to replace the f-word in the 2nd verse. Mark Knopffler said the song didn't age well in that sense and he wanted to make a change with the realization that what was once culturally acceptable was no longer.

I don't think anyone else mentioned that the catchline for one of MTV's early ad campaigns was "I want my MTV."

The head of Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, was in an appliance store. The salesmen were watching MTV and commenting. That is the origin of the song.

The video that was made for this song cannot be missed. It had the first totally CGI animation ever and it's great with the piece.

The guy singing in the high voice is Sting originally from The Police. The video was the first cartoon MTV clip I ever saw.

You really must check out the video they made for this song. A groundbreaking early use of CGI graphics to illustrate the back story behind this song. MTVplayed this video over and over and over and I could never get enough of it.

My kids were what they called the MTV Generation, and I remember watching Friday Night Videos all night with them. This song was one of the ones we saw a lot. I was divorced then so if I wasn't keeping my kids, I was at the club dancing to this song with a cute little girl named Cindy, in Amarillo Texas. 😉👍

I loved the song Ride Across the River in this same album. It is not for reviewing, but such a long great song to listen and chill with.

The slow building intro, an homage to Pink Floyd perhaps??? Just a guess.

IIRC the words were from MTV’s ads back in the day. You were supposed to call your cable company and tell them “I WANT MY MTV!”

The microwave ovens, custom kitchens, refrigerators and color TVs were a parody within the MTV video of the commercials that would appear on MTV itself.

I'm glad you listened to the long version, it's the only one I'll listen to anymore because of the slow building intro and the amazing guitar solo at the end, both of which you lose on the shorter versions.
