What do you think soldiers are trained for, if you don't want to fight in other countries (in which I believe is wrong) then don't join up, do something else more humane in your life which is not to kill another human being for one person even if it is a leader of the country. In such countries like America, you have a choice.

Mark Knopfler is British - born in Scotland and brought up in England but is English (on his mother's side) and Austro-Hungarian Jewish (on his father's side) heritage. He wrote this after the Falklands war, based on the stories of soldiers who fought in it and also on the stories of his grandfathers and their fellow soldiers told of their families and lives back home as his grandfathers fought on opposite sides in WWII.

Thank you for doing this reaction today, Jay. It brings special memories for many, I'm sure. Also thank you for your service to our country. Does not matter how long you were in service.... one day serving our country deserves huge thank yous. My hubby served in Vietnam. He was a medic and his time there is one subject of which he does not speak of. Though he doesn't speak of that time, I do see him tear up in this song when Mark sings, "I've witnessed your suffering as the battle raged higher" and "You did not desert me My Brothers In Arms". Difficult times for anyone that has spent time in war. Thanks again.... take care and be well. Peace.

First off, thank you for your service. I was raised in a military family, but a childhood accident left me with a neck and leg injury that prevented me from ever serving. I still remember the effect this song had on me the first time I ever heard it. Just an incredibly emotional and atmospheric mini-masterpiece. Since you like Dire Straits, basically Mark Knopfler's solo albums are a continuation of that work and probably would have been Dire Straits albums had the band not broken up. He continues making amazing music to this day.

Written by Mark to commemorate the Falklands war, fought between Britain and Argentina in the South Atlantic in 1982, hence ‘mist covered mountains’. Famously used in an episode of the West Wing, this is a tribute to fighting men of all nations and all wars. Often used here in the UK for Rememberance Sunday, held on or near 11th November to honour the war dead. One of Dire Straits finest.

Sleep will have to wait, Dire Straits are brilliant and I watched one of their concerts yesterday. The instrumentals in this are wonderful, but then they always are. My Dad was in the Royal Navy and Father in Law was in the Royal Air Force, both in WWII so I revere the men and women who serve. The guitar sounds so melancholy like the emotion behind the words, Mark makes his guitar sing and its unforgettable to me. You reacted to it as I thought you would, it is worth listening to and thinking of those who never came home. Peace to all Mary-Ellen UK

E J...... Mark Knopfler isn't underrated in the slightest. He's considered by most of the best guitarists as one of the greatest. I've been a huge metal, R&R, Rock fan all my life, and I consider him better than Hendrix, Clapton and even Vai or Satriani. He makes real emotions with that guitar. I can't think of many players that can do what he does. Sure, there are more technical players, but they can't produce mood or emotions like he can.

I cry, just a little bit, sometimes, when I hear this song because the first time I heard it, the album was playing and my husband's brothers in arms, the sailors stationed on his Navy boat, filled every seat, and covered the floor, in my living room, while our baby boy, now a 30 year old man, toddled from one to the next. I think of them when I hear it now and hope they're happy and whole. I hope the same for all our troops and I thank you for your service, Jayvee, however short. The whole Brothers In Arms album is great so, if you haven't already, I'd play it start to finish, if I were you. The Dire Straits song that first hooked me was Sultans Of Swing. Also, years ago, Knopfler teamed up with Chet Atkins to do a song called Poor Boy Blues that always makes me smile.

I served in the US Navy from 1977-1983 and I believe anyone who has served or serving now in any branch of the military can identify with this song. Marks lyrics are perfect for the anti war, somber, haunting sounds this song is. Nobody hates war more then the men and women who fight them. Lyrics are everything in this song. Listen again while reading the lyrics I'm including below and you'll see what I mean. These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Someday you'll return to Your valleys and your farms And you'll no longer burn to be Brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire I've witnessed your suffering As the battle raged high And though they did hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms There's so many different worlds So many different suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones Now the sun's gone to hell and The moon's riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But it's written in the starlight And every line in your palm We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms Truer words have NEVER been spoken or sung.

What a fantastic song by Mark Knopfler. I actually drew massive inspiration from this song for my own film which is based within The Falklands War, which can be found on my channel. The song really helped me visualise what The Falklands War must have been like and enabled me vast amounts of creativity for the film. Without this song, the film would never have been made. Kudos to Mark for the inspiration and thanks for the upload dude 👍🏻

I was lucky enough to see Mark Knopfler in a concert in Edinburgh a few years ago. He is amazing! I think you would enjoy listening to the track “Sailing to Philadelphia” a duet he does with James Taylor. All about the two English surveyors who leave this country and go to the USA to draw up the Mason-Dixon Line, basically splitting the Northern and Southern states of America.

Salute to you and all that have done any part of serving- I come from a long, deep line of military family- including my significant other of 26 years- and my 2 dear brothers -literally brothers in arms, many difficulties with deploying and injuries- 20 years plus for both, one Marine, one Army- Very proud of them both-and all that have sacrificed so much for our freedom- (wow you just said grill out in the backyard .. exactly what one brother did today! Grillin’ and making homemade ice cream!) ❤️🙏🏼🇺🇸❤️🤘🏼☮️🇺🇸❤️🙏🏼

Amazing band, got it all. Fronted by the writer, singer and guitarist, the living legend Mark Knopfler. We are blessed to have such a human being in this planet. Excellent reaction too.

Hi Jayvee interesting fact Mark Knofler was born in Glasgow Scotland, but was raised in Newcastle in the north of England which is where Sting is from and they were both teachers at one point

In the Vietnam era of the 60s, we had a then famous phrase that still resonates today: "What if they gave a War & nobody came"?

From one vet to another, thank you for your service. You may not have gone to war or personally witness the horrors of combat, but you volunteered to go and face the possibility of having to do so! I was a woman in the Navy before we could serve on most ships and participate equally with our fellows... but I would have. That is the point of serving. Again, thank you.

Thank you for your service. My husband enlisted during the Vietnam war but never had to fight. His brother-in-law on the other hand served 3 tours in 'Nam.
