Direct Drive is now much easier to install on most printers with the Sherpa Mini extruder. Anycubic Mega S can now direct drive with ease.

This one was a great upgrade to the stock extruder! Just make sure all the gears move smoothly before installing.

I have been very lucky with my Mega-S, I bought it on Ebay brand new for $190aud and have not had a single problem in the 18 months I have had it and it prints everything beautifully. I can even print ABS with a cardboard box over it as an enclosure lol. Great printer straight out of the box in my opinion that needs nothing changed. Thanks for sharing mate.

Glad it was helpful! It was an interesting upgrade where building was easy, and tuning might not even work for some people!

Very cool upgrade, JJ. My biggest question is, how does it affect the speed? That would be my main reason for changing to squeeze out some more mm/s! I typically print 50 mm/s at 0.2 layers and 60 mm/s at 0.3 for draft quality. Any idea yet on how much more you can push it?
@JJShankles

That is a great question, and I totally forgot to include some testing for this video. But I did some testing over the weekend, and I am getting fair quality out of 100mm/s, low quality but still completing prints at 150mm/s. And I am getting really good prints out of about 80mm/s

It is really cool to have other printer to make the mods for the first one. I'm having i3 mega only and when did some modifications, assemble and disassemble parts three or four times before the final result 😂 GOOD JOB!

hello thanks for video . I have a problem with mine . TPU slide when extruding . And even when the wheel is tight, the TPU slips. I can even get it out by hand by pulling lightly. On the other hand, no money with pla petg and other hard filament . do you know what could be the problem? Because I disassembled several times and there are not 50 ways. I put a piece of filament to center the gears but it the same problem . Thanks

@8:45, Please answer this. My vase mode is clean but the regular prints do show those lines. Does that mean the issue is retraction settings? I am using a bowden setup with a cheap dual gear extruder. Again, 20x100mm Cylinder vase mode is clean and beautiful but a 20x100 Cylinder print is full of layer lines.

Great video! You explain everything very well. I just picked up a lightly used Anycubic i3 Mega for $50. I have printed and assembled the same carriage on my printer. I also added the y axis tensioner. For some reason I still get ghosting with my print speed at 45mm. I am interested in upgrading the mobo to sk3 and this direct drive since I got the printer so cheap. I also have an Ender 3 V2 and S1 with marlin, looking for something different to play with.
@JJShankles
@JJShankles Жыл бұрын
If you're still getting ghosting, are you printing on a stable table? I've also found if belts are too tight then it can increase ringing.

Great video. I was thinking about upgrading to direct drive and I have the same printer with the same MK4 print head. Do you have a link to the files you used to mount this to that? I am also looking at upgrading the hotend to an E3D Revo instead of the cheap one that it came with.
@JJShankles
@JJShankles Жыл бұрын
Yes, here is the link: www.printables.com/model/206014-anycubic-mega-s-mk4-x-carriage-mount-for-sherpa-mi Thanks for reminding me to add the link to the description. The Revo would be a great upgrade from the stock one. I did a minor upgrade to a better all metal hotend, and have had better results. I think just from the better machining of the parts.

Looks like an opportunity to build a mount for the top of the printer for the filament holder!
@JJShankles
@JJShankles Жыл бұрын
I normally have the filament mounted to a wall mount instead of the printer holder. Yes it definitely follows a straighter path when the filament is coming from above it.

That hole where the LCD once was is ugly. When I switched to klipper I simply put the pi zero 2 inside the machine, bought a 3,5" touchscreen and replaced the original with that. The LCD now shows the klipperscreen UI.

surprised you didnt take this time to upgrade to 24v all over, you not feel like 12v is becoming more of a PITA as time goes on?

I feel like I should have done it when I swapped out the control board. The Sherpa Mini works the same on 12V or 24V, but YES, at this point I feel like I should have already swapped to 24V at some point.

Care! with tightening the Filament tension screw. Unless Genuine Bondtech Drive gears Bearings and Shafts ?? The chinese ones, being of low grade steel (NOT hardened ) and the bearings of excreable quality will chew themselves and the shaft up into iron fillings ... V quickly.
