Director of the Fiji Red Cross Murdered

The brutal murder of John Scott, Head of Fiji’s Red Cross, and his gay partner is still clouded in rumour and political mystery. In a country that has become increasingly fundamentalist, many regarded the couple with hostility. Allegations of drug use, pornography and rent boys circled. Shortly before his death, Scott came to international acclaim helping hostages during the 2000 coup. Was his murder a political assassination; the result of a soured love affair or an act of insanity? This award winning documentary uses the murders to examine Fiji’s history over the past 50 years. Narrated by Scott’s brother, it’s a moving tale of colonial privilege, evangelical Christianity and a country still deeply divided.

I have never witnessed such a personal and tragic story provided with such honesty, sensitivity and tolerance , realizing the various indirect victims besides his brother and not making judgements on the circumstances of the various tragic acts. It seems that this brother lives the spirit of tolerance, care and making no judgement as his father was preaching them but not practicing them.

@@yanifree114 Blaming the victim is nothing unusual, your efforts to do the same here are as tired and disgusting as the rest. It's all too common for monstrous internet trolls and homophobic corrupt politicians to make false accusations that so easily appeal to the hate and fear inside people, especially the feeble-minded, in order to deflect attention and responsibility from the actual perpetrators. @@jbdbean242 It's all to easy too to find nastiness going on within the circles of important people ;politicians, celebrities and the like, when people brave enough dig deep. When I heard the circumstances of the murder I couldn't help recall the revelations about so called charity workers, including the Red Cross, sexually exploiting youngsters who were victims of a natural disaster in Haiti. This is not blaming the victim, this is being alert to what people with power over others can do and how it can be covered up, sometimes for decades.

Possibly Apete was a subconscious homosexual himself and unable to live with his feelings. Judgemental people often are that way because they're afraid that they themselves will be judged, so they sell themselves as being the opposite of how they feel inside. Shakespeare's "methinks thou protests too much" pretty much says it all.

Colonization has a lot of benefits for the colony in question. They get technology, education and military protection from a more advanced culture (if the colonizer wasn't more advanced than the other country wouldn't have become their colony). In material terms it makes complete sense that people would accept colonization. The reason people typically dispute colonial claims are for non-material reasons, typically philosophical or cultural in nature

@ChurchofCiiku - Racist drivel. Prior to colonialism was total conquer, annihilation and subjugation, such as Genghis Khan, the Ottoman Empire, and similar tribal warfare anywhere on the planet. Colonialism was no such thing, and allowed for some relative autonomy and symbiosis. Despite conflict and power struggles, it also was not a product of invasion, as were the previous examples given, and also the expansions by invasion of the more recent totalitarian Communist and fascist states of the USSR and (defeated) Nazis and Imperialist Japan.

The consequences of colonialism and the subjugation of sovereign nations by Christianity in the name of 'civilisation' are apparent here. There can be no doubt that every colonised nation in the world, if left to their own devices instead, would now be much better off. That being said, the murder of John Scott and Greg Scrivener is tragic, as are all atrocities committed in the name of 'God'. This is the elephant in the room. This is why gay people must fight for their rights in court against the forces of religious evil. It amazes me that their were no psychiatrists allowed to speak in this doc. This is about shadow issues on the part of the killer. He kills the thing he wants but cannot accept. This is how religion is complicit in the murders. And the officials and police chief are guilty of protecting this pathetic man. I hope that all gay foreigners see this and boycott Fiji. As for gays living there, I pity you having to suffer such an evil society.

Pure bs, your victim blaming for this horror is sickening. This was pure blind hatred with a mix of mental illness, he knew what he was doing. He was raised in a homophobic country and steeped in hatred for the Indian community, and when he saw John go to their aid in the violent coup he snapped. This was a vicious and brutal hate crime, and he was let off easy because of race, homophobia and celebrity, a popular local who was a big star athlete.
