we just watched this a couple days ago. To me, us the viewer, are the “Fool” so to speak. The film lulls you into a false sense of security so by the time Sargent Howie finds the missing girl, we are experiencing the same feelings of shock and dismay that he is. Brilliant film

*If you are a virgin and a landlords daughters wants it, let her take it, you will then live. My fav film of all time. Still not seen a film with such depth as the wicker man. And what a soundtrack too.

The Wicker Man is a film I never get bored of. Howie does need an introduction and I disagree with Hardy. The original scenes provide a solid foundation to Howie's character as a stern Christian. Woodward played a great part and his overall and complete inclusion cements the film together. To remove the original scenes is a huge mistake.

I disagree. I think the introductory scenes would be too much of an explanation. All you need to know is at the beginning and throughout as a stern Christian. One could imagine the ridicule he endured at the police station, indeed, throughout his life up to that point. Right decision to take it out.

@@jollyolly34 ^this. One of the four horsemen of the overall decline of cinema is refusal to respect the viewer's intelligence. We are shown enough of Howie to deduct a decent understanding of his background. To bat us about the head with it would not give us a greater understanding of the character, it would just cheapen the film.

I've been a Wiccan for 25 years. I own The Wicker Man in a special edition on DVD in a wooden box. SO many Pagans have watched this film, adored Summerisle and its inhabitants... but boy do we discuss the ending. Howie by no means went to the sacred site at the end "of his own free will." He was deceived, mislead, and lied to in order to lure him to the Wicker Man. While no Wiccan would ever sacrifice an animal let alone a human, I can tell you that, IMHO, Lord Summerisle's ritual would FAIL because Howie did NOT enter of his own free will. As much as I adore the character of Lord Summerisle, I like to think that the following season, he himself ends up in the Wicker Man. And no discussion of the film is complete without saying, "OH GOD! OH JESUS CHRIST!"

I honestly prefer the theatrical cut for its faster pace.

Robin Hardy has the shortest filmography ever; what's he been doing all these decades?

Working for advertising agencies in the US and Europe, in both film and print; he was also involved in conceptualising historical theme parks - an experience he would later draw upon in his screenplay for The Wrath of the Gods!

I do enjoy discussions of the movie. More than the movie itself actually. For some reason it was never scary for me and all the scenes were really overly long and really drawn out. For instance it seems rather obvious the girl the policeman is looking for is gone and was sacrificed. Yet they draw it out for an hour and a half

Funny that it was so obvious to you considering it didn't actually happen.
