Formerly of Scarve, Soilwork, Devin Townsend Project, Aborted, Sybreed Dirk now plays drums in the almighty Megadeth. In this video I break down the "Dirk Blast" and I show you a couple variations on how to play them.
This exercise is a simple flam accent played really quickly, and because of the alternating strokes you can drum faster for longer.

Remember folks, this is a flam accent and not a flam tap. If you have any specific questions leave them below if you need any clarification. Thanks as always!

Dirker Dirker, Dirks got a couple of lessons of his out there, he's a cool guy. Great video dude, Swiss army triplet! Phrase of the day!
@CameronFleury
@CameronFleury 5 жыл бұрын
Dirk is the man, man! Also slight side note, this pattern is a Flam accent and not a Swiss Army Triplet. The difference being the swiss army triplet sounds just like a flam accent. Instead of being build upon a single stroke roll it has a double stroke with a flam on the first note, followed by a single stroke. The Swiss army triplet doesn’t alternate naturally within itself. Hope this helps :) They're practically the same thing. Thanks for commenting Mark!

Great video! Loving the slow mo playback...helps me big time! I'm wondering what are your thoughts on different grip techniques? I'm a new drummer and my instructor is teaching me matched grip.
@CameronFleury
@CameronFleury 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Frank! Grip depends and what you're comfortable playing, and how you feel playing that way. Which grips we're you thinking about trying out?

@@CameronFleury hey thanks for the response! A technique I'm thinking about is finger style. I'm noticing a lot of drummers using finger style, for better stick control at higher tempos. Is that a more advanced technique?
@CameronFleury
@CameronFleury 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't necessarily say it's an advanced technique, but in conjunction with other techniques it can be difficult to grasp at first. Like anything else it will require hours of practice. The finger technique is great for playing fast tempos. Definitely look into it, and maybe i'll put together a video on it.

Your not exactly doing it right. When you added the cymbal, you change from a flam accent to triplets... you play RRR on the snare and your left hand once on the cymbal and than switched. It's meant to be RRL on snare with the left hand the cymbal for the first R. And switch to LLR on snare with right hand on cymbal during the first stroke... and this does matter a lot, as the Dirk blast gets it unique from this order of hand playing on the snare in this particular way

if you look at flam accent pattern, it goes R(L)RRL(R)LL instead of just R(L)RR repeatedly also it helps building ambidextrity
