Dirk Verbeuren

12 жыл бұрын

Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren demonstrates his ever-elusive "Dirk Blast" as performed in Scarve, Soilwork, Devin Townsend Project, Aborted, Sybreed, etc. Verbeuren came up with this application of the flam accent in 1994 and first recorded it in the song "Shelly's Dead" on the Scarve mini-CD "Six Tears Of Sorrow" released in 1996.
Correction: the rudiment shown is the flam accent, not flam tap.
Sticking is as follows: lR L R rL R L lR L R rL R L (lR and rL are flams).

@@JayDillaThaKilla They are definitely not the same. I know because I use both interchangeably. Dirk blast sticking R RRR R RRR R L L L L L L L L L Spencer Prewett's switch blast RRRRR RRRRR R L LLLLL LLLLL They are also a bit different in principle. Prewett's switch blast is based on the premise of a blast beat with changing leads each measure (or half-measure, depending on how you count it). Dirk's blast is based on an application of the flam-triplet rudiment. Not to mention how different they are in practice due to the different ways they are counted. All in all, it's not too unreasonable of me to say that they are different techniques.

I set my kit up with the hi-hats at 12 o' clock using a remote hi-hat pedal, and it really helps to do this beat as well as any other beat requiring the hands have equal access to the hats. A symmetrical setup in general really helps for anything that requires the hands be equidistant to all aspects of the kit. I recommend it to anyone looking for a new configuration for their kit.
@KenKlejs

Sounds weird, can you link to a picture or something?
@projectbaum
@projectbaum 8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the above sentence is a past tense one (should have set "I had set my kit up" to be more proper). I no longer have my set, I had to get rid of it due to a living situation outside of my control. If you want to see what I mean, though, look up how Bill Bruford sets up his kit. Mine was a lot like that for hi-hat, snare, and tom placement. Danny Carey of Tool also has a 12 o' clock hi hat placement, though his are above his rack toms, and I found that to be too much of a stretch. I didn't even use rack toms by the end of it, just floor toms.
@erikbarrett85
@erikbarrett85 8 жыл бұрын
+Ken Klejs I'd Google it. I am going to end up seeing mine up like that, as it is seeming more and more to be the only set up I haven't tried, including going leftie and back. I am most capable of performing the techniques I know when I am not cross sticked for grove, as in your typical right across to hi hat, left under. I want my right exactly like my left. I just haven't bought the remote hat yet...

@allmetaliswelcome I don't think so. The flam accent switches hands which allows time to move to the hi-hat, whereas the swiss triplet doesn't... I haven't tried but it seems nearly impossible to move comfortably from snare to hi-hat (or vice-versa) within two triplets at high speeds.
