Im 99% sure a new fuel pump will fix the fj80 so its time to dig out the old pump. Which kind of snowballs into gutting the truck.

The most common reason for a smelly 80 is clogged sunroof drains. They’re fragile, so carefully use some weedeater filament to push the crud out. That and a good power wash on your carpets and the 80 should be minty.

Hi Fred Been a fan of yours since way back in your Petersen's day's and remember the cheep truck challenge with the FZJ80 in it, I'm also local to you and recognized that you were testing / beating on 80 out near Pozo on Garcia ridge. I liked it so much that I ended up getting a 94 FZJ 80 with lockers bone stock, It's a built crawler now following you motto biggest tires lowest lift. 2.5 " lift and 39s lots of cutting to make them work. Of course it has a host of other modifications and it impresses, I remember pulling up to the soup bowl on the Con when it was still on 37s there were a lot of spectators and a line of Rig waiting there turn and people were snickering at the land cruiser but when it walked right up People were impressed, it what I like about it most, everyone expect the built 4runners and mini trucks to make it but they think a land cruiser is just for over landing but built right there pretty impressive. Also the first set of tires I ran were off the cheep truck cruiser they were powder -coated army green by you and had 35 on them, I got them form the guy you sold the cruiser to Ha ha.

So cool to see an 80 being worked on in US. I learnt to drive in a 1hz, have had 2 other diesel 80’s and my 60 series as the 1hdt turbo diesel from the 80. You’ll find these are very capable with 33’s and 2” of lift (practically nothing by US standards), and daily ability will barely be effected. Good luck, they are a good bud!

There is also a little probe hanging off of the bottom of the fuel sender next to the float. That is the switch that triggers the low fuel light when it is not longer sitting in fuel. The low fuel warning light is independent of the float.

I wold suggest testing the pump and checking the wires to the pump. They have been know to rub and create shorts. If the pump still works then throw it in the spare box. Quantum sells some very nice pumps.

Not a Toyota fan but I gotta give 'em credit for that access door. I think most other brands would actively NOT include that! My old XJ is definitely getting a new flap whenever the pump goes....

I've done 2 seperate Grand Cherokee fuel pumps. I think dropping the tank would be easier than pulling out seats. Unless you can get it without pulling the seat

@@rediron44 It's under the cargo area in the back...but there is no carpet or seats. :)

@@rediron44 In an FZJ80, the third row can be removed without tools and I've seen guys on Mud do the fuel pump without actually removing the 2nd row seats. I imagine some carpet cutting might be in order.

Fred did you spray some ether in the intake and see if the engine kicked? That is just a "secondary" diagnostic tool to test the fuel pump. And I'm sure that knife is illegal in Califrickenfornia.

Did you power wash the carpet and seats while they were out? The poverty package on 80’s is the way to go. Much more comfortable.

Are you going to spray paint the Access Door in Patriotic Colors? That always gives your rig some more MMMmmph.
