welcome to another episode of dirtcheapdaily! this is the first episode in my manual swap series where I replace the 4speed automatic trans in the legacy GT with a 5sp manual transmission.
simplicity/works somewhat with other cars
This is actually a really simple swap. the basics of this swap will carry over into a lot of different makes besides subaru, but there will be specifics that will be different.

If you’ve even googled how to do a manual swap, you’ve most likely seen the negative comments from people who’ve never done it, harshly advising you to buy a new car that’s a manual. I’m here to tell you that is not the only option!
While buying another car would be the easiest option, there are a lot of reasons why you wouldn’t want to.
1: the car was gifted to you/dont want to deal with buying a new car
2: lots of new/aftermarket parts on your current ride & sentimentalities
3: you found a screaming deal on an automatic
In the case of my GT, I got the car for a really good deal, I wasn’t planning on it being a project car and my wife likes automatics. By the time i decided to make it a project car, I’d already done so much to it and put so many new parts on it, it wouldn’t have been worth just selling it and getting a manual.
in this series, i’ll go through step by step, and show you how you can swap a manual transmission into your automatic subaru!
There are always slight differences between years and body styles, so you should definitely supplement this video with research of your own. There are a lot of good forums about this topic, you just have to sort through them to find the good ones.
parts
The first thing to do is to source out all the parts you’ll need for the swap!
there are 9 things you’ll need and it’s easiest if you can find a donor car at a junkyard to pull everything off of, that way you’ll know it will all match up and you can keep all the hardware
-manual transmission and manual trans crossmember/mount
-manual trans driveline
-matching rear diff
-pedal assembly
-clutch cable/slave,master cylinder
-manual starter
-flywheel& clutch kit
-manual center console trim
-flywheel/pressure plate bolts
I pulled most everything off a 95 Impreza sedan at the junkyard and then found the correct driveline on eBay.
I’m also doing a RWD conversion at the same time, so I didn’t bother getting a matching diff since the front axles aren’t going to be connected.
i bought a new clutch kit and flywheel, and I decided to use just a cable clutch. It’s a simpler and less expensive, plus I like the feeling of a cable clutch.
If you do want to do a hydro clutch, check your firewall in the engine compartment and see if you have the holes drilled for the clutch master cylinder. They aren’t hard to drill, but It’s always easier if they’re already there.
Once you’ve compiled all your parts, you’re ready to start!
