All your vehicle tires show the correct pressure, and the low tire pressure light won’t go off, right? Use these simple steps to solve it without a trip to the mechanic!

Although tire pressure monitoring systems have been around longer than 2008, that was the year that all new vehicles sold in the U.S. were required to have the system installed in them.
The system works by having each vehicle tire contain a battery-powered air pressure sensor/radio frequency (RF) transmitter that “talks” with the vehicle’s monitoring system. When the tire pressure drops below 25% of the specified tire pressure, the indicator light comes on.
However, many vehicle owners have been frustrated after checking all the tires, inflating them to the correct pressure, and still not having the low-pressure indicator message turn off on the dashboard.
In this episode, DirtFarmer demonstrates the process of elimination to isolate the problem, and quickly reset the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The system sensors in the tires have a 5 to 10-year life, usually limited by battery life. If the batteries are dead, you will need to visit your favorite tire retailer for a replacement.
Lastly, should you check your tire pressures ongoing even with the TPMS active on your car?
Absolutely! Having underinflated tires simply doesn’t make sense. Your tires wear faster, braking and cornering performance is negatively affected, and your gas mileage is also reduced significantly. So, getting into the habit of keeping your tires properly inflated gives you great economic and performance returns on your tire investment, all for only a few minutes every couple of weeks. To make it easier to do this task, consider getting a portable tire inflator. You can check out our review of the DeWalt® 20V tire inflator here:

Another great helper to assure your tires are being maintained at the correct pressure is Quick Pressure™ tire pressure monitoring valve caps. These durable visual indicators screw onto the top of your tire’s valve stems and indicate if your tires are properly inflated. Quick Pressure™ caps will let you know if the pressure drops below 10% of the correct pressure.
This is a great improvement over using the TPMS solely, as the TPMS will display a low tire pressure message when there is about 25% pressure loss. You can purchase Quick Pressure™ pressure monitors at QuickPressure.com, or tireqp.com. You can obtain a set of four for your car or light truck for well under $40!
Check out our review on Quick Pressure™ monitor caps here: VIDEO COMING SOON!
Want to know more about tire pressure monitoring systems, including their history, how they work, and what they can and can’t do? Then check out our extended article on DirtFarmerJay.com - www.dirtfarmerjay.com/article...
Sure, you can take your vehicle to the tire shop to get your TPMS low tire pressure warning turned off, but with what you now know, you can JUST DO IT YOURSELF!

If all tires show good pressure check to see if you are using a usb charger plugged into the power outlet. Some chargers will interfere with tpms signal and show up as a low tire or check engine light referring to loss of signal from tpms sensors. Nissan are more sensitive to this issue. Unplug USB power adapter and see of code doesn’t disappear in a day or after a few restarts. The cheaper the usb power adapter the higher chance it will give off emf that causes these issues.

Hi Jay, just went through this with my 2010 Hyundai. Except there was one more item for your list. Because we had cold weather and snow I didn't want to start up my air compressor so just took the car to our local Les Schwab since our tires are under warranty there. They checked all the air and all about 10 psi low. The TPMS tire icon light on the dash didn't go off so the next day took it back to them thinking maybe the spare tire they didn't check after watching a KZfaq video. Well, it was #5 on you new list. The TPMS sensor inside the tire was loose and I guess they screwed it into the tire. Anyway they put it together and the light went off. Best thing no cost and I just sat in there lobby drinking my morning coffee. Cause was maybe hitting pot holes that the county are busy filling is my guess. Tim from "Tims Workshop TJY"

On my 2011 Honda CR-V, a lot of times during the winter my TPMS light comes on usually as the temps drop below 30 degrees. Sometimes it goes off if I am driving a far distance, I assume because the tire warmed up. But the light never comes on in the summer. And it's never because the tires are low. I see this system as a hassle and extra expense. But only because I'm religious about checking the tires once a month so always know when my tires are low. I am sure they are great for people that do not check them or check very rarely.

I don't need a high-line TPMS system to tell me which specific tire is low. The cost of maintaining this type of system farrrrrr outweighs the benefits. The sensors are expensive, need replaced after a few years because of cheap batteries, the labour cost to install, relearn and retrain the sensors is ridiculous. With a low line system I never have to worry about replacing any sensors because there are no dedicated sensors. The low tire pressure light comes on, I take out my tire gauge and check the psi on each tire manually, add air to the offending tire(s) and the warning light disappears immediately - beautiful. Thank god my 2018 Ford Escape is a low-line system. No having to turn the key this way and that way 50 times, wait 200 seconds and repeat, just to get rid of the light, ridiculous lol

Thank you for the information. 👍 However I am a bit confused because in my Kia Picanto car the tire pressure on the door side says one thing, but it says a slightly different pressure in the manual. 🤔 Door says equal pressure front and back. While manual says more air in front than back. 🤔 Last time I did what the manual says, and light went off. But now it's back on and it isn't long ago that I filled the tires. I'm confused why the door and the manual would say different pressure. 🤔 Maybe I should go for what the door says instead of the manual then. I don't know.

Because its likely the tires have been replaced more than once, go with the pressure on the tire sidewalls. Since the tires are likely not the original tires from the factory, use the pressures displayed on your tire's sidewalls. It's possible the battery is low in one of the TPMS units.I think that's likely given that you usually don't see a low pressure indicator unless the tire is 20 to 25% underinflated. Since you recently inflated your tires, it seems unlikely that you'd be losing that much pressure. Hope this helps. DFJ

Thanks Jay. Why does Ford tell me to inflate my tires to 35 psi on my 2007 F150, when the tire itself says 80 psi? I remember the issues with the Explorer and Firestone. The Explorer was not stable, and Fords solution was to under-inflate the tires, which caused blowouts.... I run my tires at 50 psi to improve gas mileage, and it handles fine. I don't trust Ford's recommendation. My tire guy says I could go higher. What do you think? My low pressure symbol stays on all the time, even with all tires full.
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 2 жыл бұрын
William, you are not the first one to ask this, and in fact, I had a similar experience. I believe you will find that the pressure on the side of the tire is the "max" pressure, the pressure that that tire has been rated for before tire damage would occur due to overpressure. This isn't the pressure that tire handles best at. If the tires on your vehicle are the same size or very similar to what it was originally outfitted for, then the pressure on the placard on the driver's door jamb is fine to go with. Yes, you can run more if you want, but there are trade-offs. You are creating a less flexible tire, so you will probably get better gas mileage due to less rolling resistance. But, you can diminish handling characteristics (less side-to-side flexibility), as well as braking distance due to the "contact patch" of the tire (the amount of tire tread in contact with the road at any given second) being smaller. As for the TPMS showing a message ongoing, something is off. Three things come to mind: 1.) the sensors have not been put through the "learning" process the last time you had tires installed or rotated, 2.) you have a sensor in one of your tires that are either improperly installed or has a dead battery, or isn't transmitting for some reason, or, 3. your spare is pressured too low and is causing the message. I hope this helps. Get the system checked out, you want to have the TPMS working for you. Best, DFJ

Tried reset 3 times and drove few minutes but light still there. Whenever i turn off the engine for few minutes, and turn on again, thats the only time the light will turn off. (Only now that i learned to check the spare as well) should i be concerned about the frequent occurrence of TPMS turning on? Thanks.

I think there is something not right in your car's TPMS. You should not have this many "false-positives." I would take your vehicle back to the retailer where you got the tires from and have them check the system. Something is not calibrated correctly, or one of the in-tire sensors is not working properly. It should be very rare you get a tire low indicator. Let me know how this turns out for you! Best, DFJ

@DirtFarmerJay 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and writing! There are variations of the indirect TPMS system, so they don't all behave or operate the same. Seeing that you have an ongoing issue occurring on this very nice car, you'll have to check a few things that at the outset may not make sense. Even so, the problem exists, and so you'll need to be creative. A few things come to mind: 1. check the spare for correct pressure. It can be transmitting is some way and fouling up things for you. Unlikely, but check anyway. 2. Have you changed out one of the tires lately due to road damage on that one tire? If so, the slight difference in tread circumference with a new tire and 3 others with slight wear can set off the system. 3. What condition are the brake rotors and pads in? If you've got one of the rotors with higher pad pressure than the others, it's possible that that tire is turning ever-so-slightly slower than the others, and the TPMS is "seeing" this as low tire pressure/higher rolling resistance. If these don't solve it or set you in the right track, I'd see if I could finds a Mercedes Benz mechanics forum and see what they are saying to each other about this issue.

@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 6 ай бұрын
Because if you've exhausted all the things that you can do to clear it, then get it taken care of by a professional. But, as the video shows, that's the last resort.

But this is totally WRONG if you don't have the stock tires. If you're not running the stock tires on the car you could ruin them with the incorrect pressure.

Thanks for the insight. We'll see if we can append the video - at the very least in the video description. Best, DFJ

It's likely one or more of the units has a dead battery. They only last 5 to 10 years. Best, DFJ

Boy all you did was waste my time. I ask how to disable this junk. It has never been correct and the government is not going to tell me what extra junk I must have. If you aren't smart enough to check your tires Out!

Useless, just another way for dealers to get you in to sell you a new engine!! Use a good tire gauge and place a tape over that light.

Tape won't help when the car comes up for the MOT test ( UK gov vehicle test ).The garage will simply fail the car if the light is on .Stupid as you can have perfect tyres and show the garage that all tyres have correct pressure BUT they will still fail it if the light is on .One more way to make money out of the car driver. I have a small plug in code reader to identify warning light faults.

My TPMS warning light recently came on. All tires, including spare are at optimum pressure. Warning light does not go off. Been over a week of driving already. If it's not the truck's receiver, it's one or more of the sensors on the tires. How the heck do you easily troubleshoot that? Got five tires to debug.
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 9 ай бұрын
This is a tough one, but usually means that one or more of the sensor batteries have worn out. This happens when the sensors are about 5 years or older. Unfortunately, this usually means a trip to tire shop for them to locate what sensors are working and which aren't and replacing the "timed-out" ones. I wish I had better news. Let me know how this turns out for you. Best, DFJ

@@DirtFarmerJay If it's a sensor, possible culprit could be the spare which is original on my 2011 Tacoma. All four tires were replaced few months ago so unless defected, should be okay. Maybe.
