Let's run our new Toyota Tacoma through the Rubicon! This video almost didn't happen believe it or not. Shaun from Story till now talked me into doing a video on the way to the trail! So big thank you to Shaun for not only coming down from Canada for this trip but for convincing me to make a video as well.
The Rubicon is a legendary trail. Let's do what we can to keep it open. Pick up trash, clean up spills and do what you can to keep this place open for generations! I hope that you enjoy this video enough to get outside and live life! Make these memories ASAP!

Thank you for watching the video! Since OnX is the official sponsor of this trip it feels like a good time to remind you that we have a 20% discount worked out for any of you interested in trying their software. I believe it's like $30 for the year, which is already cheap, but who doesn't like to save a little extra when they can. No pressure on my end but this really is great software. It's constantly helping me find epic destinations. Call some friends and get some trips on the calendar! The time for making memories is now folks! The Rubicon NEEDS to be on your bucket list as well as a few others that I have plans to visit in the near future. Oh yeah, the Discount code is "dirtlifestyle" and here is a link if you are interested. Thank again for watching! ONX MAPS: webmap.onxmaps.com/account-purchase.html?

If you have the locker on it turns off abs, tacomas have a anti roll back feature that uses the abs, many times if I’m using the locker and I roll back just a inch it will shut the truck off and say trans temp high and oil pressure low

I did an upgrade on a buddies Tacoma by installing a cotter pin in the transmission line "bypass" block to keep the lines open at all times. In addition to that an added trans cooler up front and he hasn't had further issues. Hope that helps.
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle Жыл бұрын
It definitely does! I always consider a cooler for towing but this would be a good idea for crawling aswell. 👍
@PNW_Rodeo
@PNW_Rodeo Жыл бұрын
@@DirtLifestyle Nate, pinning that plunger in on the bypass block is very helpful in keeping the temps down before they get hot. You can find it inline with the trans lines under the passenger side. There's a plunger on the side with a tiny hole on either side of it, like a hydraulic timing belt tensioner. Push that plunger in and hold it while threading the cotter pin through to retain it. Love the videos and I'm glad I could provide some helpful info. 👍
@rickwhitmire7933

Is this only for an Automatic Trans? The cotter pin deal. I’ve seen my low oil pressure like come on, once in 70,000 miles. But I was at an extreme angle.
@PNW_Rodeo
@PNW_Rodeo Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's for the transmission cooler bypass valve. It's s small block between both lines that is closed when the fluid temp is below a set temp (re-routes fluid back to transmission instead of cooler). When the fluid reaches temp the valve opens and allows the fluid to go to the cooler up front. Pinning it locks it open 100%.

Your ending really got me Nate. I'm lying in bed with a blood clot in my lung, I can't take the heat and humidity outside. So my 502 Suburban swap continues to sit and wait for me. I'm missing out on trail rides with my wife and daughter and the unknown of upcoming test dates and results is not leaving me in a great state of mind. 51 yrs old and I wish I had at times done more for myself and my family than always helping others. It felt right and good at the time, and even though I would never turn my back on someone in need if I was in a position to help, I'm lying here feeling like I short changed myself and my family. To anyone reading this, along theblines of Nate's closing remarks, if you're able now, get out with family and friends and run some trails and enjoy the time you have NOW, don't wait. Thanks for the video Nate.

Do not wait to do the things you want later, later is now. I hope when I do die, it's in a beautiful place like I see in your videos. I will probably never make it to the extreme trails you experience but I will be leaving Wisconsin in the winters & going to remote places in the southwest camping. Thank you for sharing all the wonderful footage.

That zip tie job works really well! I used the exact same trick when I was out in Wyoming. I blew the top of my plastic radiator on a previous rig. I melted a zip tie into it and drove it all the way back home that way in the heat of the summer. Good job making that thing work!

Problems, troubles, and breakdowns are half the fun (as long as its not catastrophic and/or injuries involved.) When things go wrong, it makes things exciting. It gives reason to stop, have fun, joking around with each other, work together, and overall just enjoy the experience. When things go perfectly smoothly, it seems like things go by too quick and it can be "boring" (relatively at least. Its never boring going on an adventure haha)

Was an awesome time hanging out with everyone! It’s always nice when you meet some good people. Thanks Nate and Shaun for doing things like this. Honestly, it’s the best way to do a trail like this. A bunch of people who have never done it with a couple that have. After doing it though, I would prefer to take three days. It gives you a chance to really soak in being there. Then you can really relax and enjoy everything that’s there. From the wheeling, to the scenery, to the springs themselves. Definitely returning to do it again! P.S. I have to admit. Your closing statements got me a little teary eyed because I know exactly what you're talking about. I've been through that area hiking on the PCT many years ago as well as much of the high Sierras and Trinity Alps and more recently, the Cascades... The astonishing beauty of northern California and the Cascade range are some of the fondest memories of my life. At age 61 some of that hiking is getting a little tougher so I have been turning to off roading to be able to continue the adventuring that has brought me so much joy. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately... You can't off road to many of the places that you can on foot. Keep up the good work making great videos that inspire the rest of us...

Don't apologize for talking numbers. As another builder / suspension nerd, I love to here it. I've always been fascinated by how there is no apparent "perfect" wheelbase or tire size. One obstacle the 110" wheelbase rig will absolutely idle up without any drama and the next its all f'd off and banging limiter followed by a stock tj on 33's idling through with open diffs laughing. It might be one of my favorite parts of wheeling. It seems like every setup has its place.

Moses Lake here! Same issues with my lifted 3rd gen taco. Imo, your cruise issues could be the front sensor in the grill, your ABS sensors (or the wires for them), or less common, a wheel bearing (most likely on the rear). The most common problem being the abs sensor failure or the wiring for them. The wires are very thin and brittle, they break internally very easily when stretched. Pull the harness off each sensor and test for voltage with your truck in acc mode.

My issue is the sensor in the grill. Lifted 7.5 inches in the front, 6 in the rear on 35's. My cruise sensor does not like the hight vs stock.
@alexs825
@alexs825 Жыл бұрын
If it’s the sensor you can add washers in the top screw holes to point it down. You have to guess and check but I’ve heard 1 thin washer is enough for 3” of sensor lift. Most people aren’t as high tho they usually have the sensor 4” higher not 6-8”

So over here they realign or recalibrate the sensors if you lift or lower a vehicle and it's a necessity to get it registered to be highway legal again
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle Жыл бұрын
It's definitely the sensor. I clear the code and after 300-400 miles it trips again. Then if I take a corner fast the traction control light flashes and trips if the crash avoidance light is on. If I solve the problem with the crash avoidance sensor it should solve the traction control system issues. The low oil pressure and high transmission temp problems can probably be solved with a doubler in front of the tcase. With lower tcase ratios I can keep the rpms up, locking the torque converter and keeping oil pressure up. Just a theory but this is how I plan on approaching these issues 👍. Maybe I can build the sensor into the bumper and re calibrate it or just move it lower in the grill 🤷‍♂️

Make sure you don't have a vacuum leak. I had an intake coupler that would slip off climbing obstacles and cause the transmission overheat warning. New coupler and two new hose clamps later, no more nuisance warnings.

I've had this trail on my list for so long but this video makes me realize just the level of preparation mechanically, mentally and financially you need to have before tackling this trail with confidence. A regear, some slightly larger tires and maybe a little extra armor and my Tacoma should be ready within the next year and I'm going no matter what. Thanks for the amazing storytelling Nate!

Great video Nate. I did the Rubicon a few years ago, 3 of us in 2 well built JKs. We ran the entire trail in one very long day. Maybe not the best way to do it, but it was our choice. We hit the trailhead very early and got to Tahoe very late. We are not campers so it was the way we wanted to do it. The only thing we bypassed was the soup bowl. Couple of thngs.....the good: Awesome trail, awesome views. A trail every off roader needs to do. The bad: The people on the trail. As I saw you do at least once, we picked up a LOT of trash. So much so that by Cadillac hill (you should have shown people the Cadillac off the trail) we no longer had room to haul any more. I have to say the people we ran into were not the friendliest people I have ever met. Its a different crowd than Moab or CO trails. We came across a Land Rover that was broken down. The guy was staying with the truck while his friends went to get parts. He was there 3 days already. But he knew if he left his truck, it would be stripped when he got back. We gave him food and water which he desperately needed. The worst episode was after Rubicon Springs we encountered 3 very old beat to hell pick up trucks. One was broke down on the trail. The 3 guys were drunk as shit and armed. We offered to help, which they refused. We then said we would just sneak past them, to which one of them, with a Glock proudly displayed in his waist band said "no, you will wait until we have this truck fixed and moved". Now there was plenty of room to go around, but they were drunk and probably high on meth. (that is meth country after all). It was an unfortunate experience but not all that rare on that trail. I read on Pirate that while we were there, a guy left his travel trailer at the trail head only to return days later and find several bullet holes in it. As he posted on line, how did they know if he was in it or not? That said, it is still a must do trail. Just go knowing that it attracts a rougher crowd than what you find in other wheeling areas. At least that is what we encountered. Could be we were just unlucky in that regard.

22R/22RE is know to have oil pressure issues on angles for a longer period of time. Those you just get a higher pressure pump, but hopefully Toyota was not stupid about it with this one too.

Your words at the end really hit home and I hope everyone takes you up on your suggestion. I like to take my Dad on Epic Jeep trips and we leave for our last one in two weeks. His body can no longer take the pain of riding through trails like he used too. We make our final ride together in two weeks. Rubicon, Fordyce and Moab. Wish us luck.

I personally appreciate all the 4x4 nerding out. For one it goes to show that it's often horses for courses. I've never been a fan of brand loyalty and giving the technical consideration of each rig helps people understand why sometimes it isn't just "buy X brand it's better" but helps them understand why a particular rig is "better" in a particular circumstance, and even where to begin to start addressing the weaknesses in a rig and playing to its strengths. Besides, its just plain informative and helps me reflect on decisions I've made during my build 😂

Cool video. I'm not a Guru but I believe what you may need to do with the truck is find out if HPtuner is supporting the 2021 or 22 year and then I would pull your oil pan and modify the location of the oil pump pickup tube and maybe your pan if need be and you may want to add a slosh or baffle plate to help hold oil in the bottom of the pan. We do it with the LS/LT engine pans for custom fitting into classics. Depending on what HPT supports you can go in and turn off the codes and check eng lt and even remove the sensor if needed. With what you've done to the truck there's no dealer that'll touch it for warranty. There sticky that way (worked at some) ABS & traction is another issue. Toyota has programming in them for safety shifts vs rpm vs spd that mixes in the trans, abs and tcs programming......if you turn off your TC system it will still operate under certain conditions and engage abs under certain conditions. Toyota's way of thinking they accounted for your safety. I'm not aware of a way around it yet. Like your vid's. I'm just down the road from you in Redmond OR. I'm building a 66 Stout right now and we have a 4runner & Tundra that I've had the same problems with.

Good motor but not really made for off road. I believe the guy who made OVTUNE mentioned that oil pools in the valve covers and has trouble draining back, hence the smoking that people see. There was something in there also about a bad oil pan design as well with the oil pickup tube and it leading to starvation. I don't think that the Toyota engineers pictured the truck going "that off road".

Did that trail in 2003 and 2004, it is awsome.We had a major break on the slabs soon as you leave Loon lake then the truck going back to the parking lot put a fan into the radiator on a hard drop.We spent the first day and night only about a mile in since the part for the first broke truck was in Sacramento. Rear carrier split in half in a dana 44 with a lock right and we replaced it with a Detroit out on the rock slabs.

Wow, Haven't run the 'Con in probably 25yrs! I've run it 3 times in my Early Bronco, once with a trailer in tow. Broke a rear alloy shaft on two separate occasions.....yeah it's a pretty tough trail and pulling the third member at Spider lake was not fun! Plan on running it next spring/summer with my step son and his 3 linked front FJ80 axled 1st gen Tacoma and me in my '85 SB pickup. Should be fun! Tip: Bring spares for stuff you think you might break and you won't break, but leave them home and.......
