I didn’t realize Paul started at 38. I’m 35 and a month into an apprenticeship. This makes me feel so much more hopeful for the future!

Hell yeah. I’m 31 and just started out. I did start with coils and such 10 years ago, but only did a couple pieces. Wish I had continued, but better late than never!

25th year in tattooing and this is the ONE truth I know...the better of a person you is 1000% porpottional to the level of tattooer you can become. Every self entitled douch canoe never lasts long in the industry. Or they work at that ONE shop that every town has...you know the shop....welcome to Tatitude...how may we NOT help you...

I’ve seen this sense of entitlement grow over the years, thanks for actually covering this, it also extends to some of our customers too which leads to unrealistic expectations. I’ve always thought of my tattoo life as a journey and we all have different skills and abilities that will change as we travel on our own journey

We have a saying in alcoholics anonymous..."you cant get 20 years sober in 20 days." Time is very important. We all progress differently. But some things take time to learn no matter how good you are. Some people cant handle criticism.

This shows the actual Talk of the industry, and who is going to respect and love their careers. Love is a fine line though. I’m a professional Tattooer on the border of Wisconsin and Illinois. Just got Corey Sinclair from black ink crew to the shop! Couldn’t be happier!

10k hrs is sufficient. Ericsson suggest it’s 20k-25k. Rule of 100 might not work for tattooing.

About the "You drew a good pencil picture of a dog once, you aren't going to be a tattooist in 10 minutes" Needs to be repeated loudly and too a lot of people. The next best bit of advice you said that needs shouted from the roof tops is where you said if you can't do something, you will turn it down. This is always the right move and I wish tattooists would be a lot more honest about their abilities, the fact that you can say that to people only makes the standing of your artistry stronger, not weaker because you have integrity. As for the filming thing, as someone who has worked in film for years, you guys are smashing it out of the park. So my only advice is don't go so hard on yourselves because the quality is currently excellent.

I'm in my late 30s. 50% wishes I'd started when young and 50% doesn't due to life experience etc Being only a year or two in, I completely understand I have a long way to go and a shit tone of learning to do. Even learning I have no idea about yet. Every tattoo big or small is a learning experience. The amount of people who think they are the centre of the entire universe really baffles me. They think everyone else knows who the they are and can feel their pain etc. But when say driving along a main road with hundreds/thousands of other cars on, how many people do you know? How many people actually give a shit about you? You're just a little person in a car driving along.

Gotta take critiques from people in it longer than you. At about 9 or so years into my career, I had Guy Atchison critique my work. He critiqued it in a magazine (asked my permission and I gladly granted it) and I was honored he'd take the time to do so. While he pointed out things I could improve, he also had a lot of positive things to say. I am forever grateful for him critiquing me. I'm now 17 years in and still have so much to learn and improve on. I also know that critique helped other tattoo artists hitting a snag in their progression as well. Be humble! It goes so far. I know I'm never going to be a Guy Atchison, Paul Booth, Nikko Hurtado etc. However, I can continue to improve as the years go on! We all can. That's the point. Be smart enough to know you don't know everything and you never will. Anyhow, great video this week! Keep it up!

I really believe you can see who is self critical, and seeks critique from their peers at about 7 years in. When you look around at those who started when you did, and you can see they got so far and stopped, I find that really sad. One of the only tattoo KZfaq accounts I watch, thanks for putting out genuine and real tattoo content.

I think this podcast is a great show of honesty and demonstrates a realistic view into the world of the tattoo industry. I am looking forward to more in the future and hope to start my own venture in the near future. Will keep my eye on the reviews to give me a good idea of a decent beginner machine and hopefully will be able to send my work in for critique. Keep up the good work guys, I have shared your stuff with my tattoo friends here in the southwest and they seem to enjoy it also :)

Is it a generational thing or just an age thing? I think a lot of people learn humility alongside everything else in life. The more skills you acquire the more aware you are of how much there is to learn. Some young people have the attitude of entitlement and arrogance not because they're Gen Z, but because they are only just getting started. I'm a millennial and I saw plenty of this attitude when I was young. I even had a bit of it myself at times.

Very true. But I also think that internet culture has changed how ‘kids’ see the world. I’m all for everyone being and doing whatever they love but getting there often involves some hardship and some hard work. Mostly because they’re are other humans on the planet that also have needs too. I think humility does come to all of use with age eventually but sometimes I get concerned that, by the time they figure it out, it’ll be too late to do anything and that makes me sad for what may become another ‘lost generation’

Thanks for the content, guys. I really appreciate your work and the knowledge you provide! I have a question that isn't related to this video (apologies for that), but I really wanted to ask. I recently moved to a new town in England and have been trying to secure an apprenticeship. It has been quite challenging as no studios seem to be interested in taking on an apprentice, which I completely understand. My question is: Am I wasting my time by walking into studios and showing my portfolio when nobody in town knows me? Alternatively, what other paths can I take to get noticed? Would you consider allowing someone who walks in with just their portfolio for an apprenticeship, even if they are a stranger? Apologies for the lengthy message

The unnamed c bomb is a quite a large c bomb isn’t he?! You review machines honestly and thoroughly, I bought the bishop power wand based off of Chris’s recommendation and love it, some machines aren’t for everyone…I also use the one glide thanks to these guys and love it…I know I’m fan boying but both Paul and chris are great guys in my opinion and break the walls down for all us tattooists that are fed up of the way the industry has been and is at the moment! Keep up the good work guys

I’d assume there’s definitely a percentage of the problem with entitlement is more people haven’t done apprenticeships 🤷🏼‍♂️ there’s more to it than that but I’d assume entitlement if higher in the group of people that haven’t done apprenticeships

I absolutely love you guys.❤ You are so right in what you say. I wanna become a tattoo artist, and I am prepared to learn and do the hard work because learning by doing for me has, more often than not, been the best way to accomplish the thing! Thing is, the truth can sometimes sound harsh on certain ears but when you stop and think about it or actually put in the time and hard work to build your reputation, the "harsh" truth just makes sense. You have to actually go through it, to shape yourself and to grow not just your skills and knowledge, but to grow and evolve as a person, and then pay the knowledge forward if you are lucky enough to have such an opportunity. Much love to the pair of you for all that you do, you absolute pair of Legends!! I wish I was in the UK to come and get a tattoo from you both. One day, maybe. Peace! ❤

Good morning ! Awesome vidéo ! This entitlement is a real problem... could go on a real rant but i won't. Paul nailed it. #cultofpaul ... Just talking with a more experienced tattooer in my region, not receiving advice, just talking about our experiences while tattooing and i learned a lot! Be open to grow and learn in all situations there is something that will help you. Stop thinking everything is due just because you want it when you want it. Ill stop there 😅😅 This channel is awesome ! Thank you for your hard work giving out advice experience and knowledge. It is appreciated.

Perspective is always has more depth and wisdom than perception. Never base your beliefs only on your perception. Your experience alone is considered anecdotal and not empirical evidence which is scientifically considered a fact. You can't see everything from everyone's perception yourself or even with your group of friends and thats why you need perspective, a broader outside view. Don't go off just a couple people's opinions especially when it's based off only their experience.

And this 'advice' is based on your SINGULAR perspective? Surely that's at least half as reliable as ours? 2 perspectives are 100% more than 1 right? Just saying.

Can we talk about the other side? the owners that just exploit the work we put into the shop? the time and effort that goes wasted ones they see they can press any more out of you? the ones that every 6 months have a new apprentice? that use free labour? i think some of the entitlement comes from the fear of ending upp scammed bu people like that. and i think some tattoers are porpusly shit to their juniors for fear they are also beaing used just tob e left holding the bag attt the end....
