Disappearing Loop CastOn

This cast on is great for beginning a circular or counterpane project. It allows you to cast on the number of stitches you need for the center (this tutorial uses 6 sts), and then you just pull the tail end to snug up the hole in the center.

@Cindy Russell, once you've got the stitches cast on you can put them anywhere you want, either dpns or distribute them onto one or two circulars for two-circs or magic loop method. Just be careful of to keep the beginning of your round marked clearly :)

I wonder if there’s an “official” way to cast on an odd number so you don’t have to deal with a yarn over being your first stitch? I made up a move, but I’ll bet there’s something better (yarn over and pull that through the last 2 stitches on the needle).

Can you then continue using the cable needles? Pulling a loop of cable and distributing the stitches evenly on both needles and proceeding with magic loop?

Not sure how this is different from Emily Ocker's cast on??

The difference is subtle. Emily Ocker's cast on uses the crochet hook to work the first round of stitches. So say you're supposed to start with 6 sts. With EO's you would have 6 visible stitches on the ring and then on the first full round you could do your increases to make 12 sts (doubling the first round is standard on a circular beginning). With this version you just have the stitches on the loop, you haven't actually made any knit stitches on the first round. So it's a little more versatile. You can do a knit purl pattern here, or you can super increase for a ruffly circle. Also, in some applications I've had the EO Cast On create a nipple in the middle of the circle. This Cast On avoids that. Hope that helps.
