What was a beautiful ending to a very emotionally charged video. I cried. Granted that may have been because the onion I took a huge bite out of in solidarity with Pete was making my eyes water, but it was also the emotions welling up from within of seeing you deal with your onions.

The trick to growing big onions is to bend over the stem when they get about 12 inches tall, but do not break it off completely. You want them to snap and remain on the plant, while laying flat on the ground. This will not kill the plant....it just redirects the majority of the nutrients to the onion bulb.

I eat onions straight like that. I take a bite of onion and chase it with a bite of green apple. Food for manly men. I also often carry an old Spyderco. It's an old beat up Military in ATS-34 that my brother gave me years ago. He got it from a friend who left it in a tool box and used it for everything. It's had a rough life. It doesn't owe anybody anything. It was in bad shape when I got it. Spyderco didn't want to sell me any parts so I did the best I could with it. I have quite a few EDC knives but find myself reaching for the old Military most often like an old pair of shoes. I like the size yet it's relatively light. And it takes a nice fine polished edge. I like how it glides through envelopes when I use it to open mail. And Pete I enjoyed seeing the hat today. It's really starting to grow on me. You know your content doesn't have to be about knives. I like to hear about chickens and onions and dogs and cats and all of it.

Endela Question: what type of soil / fertilizer do you use for your onions to get them to grow from seed from that, and how much do you water them? My wife and I have tried growing onions from nurseries and hardware stores and have had exactly this same problem, and would like to give the bed of seeds a try this time.

self-fertilization, fusion of male and female gametes (sex cells) produced by the same individual. Self-fertilization occurs in bisexual organisms, including most flowering plants, numerous protozoans, and many invertebrates. Autogamy, the production of gametes by the division of a single parent cell, is frequently found in unicellular organisms such as the protozoan Paramecium. These organisms, however, may also reproduce by means of conjugation, in which cross-fertilization is achieved by the exchange of genetic material across a cytoplasmic bridge between two individuals. Likewise, among higher plants, most of which are monoecious (i.e., bisexual-male and female gametes being produced by the same individual), most self-pollinating species are also capable of cross-fertilization, and even those that are obligate self-fertilizers are occasionally cross-pollinated by accident. Hermaphroditic animals (those in which both male and female gonads are borne on one individual) are rarely capable of self-fertilization, since many such species have adaptations encouraging cross-fertilization. As an evolutionary and reproductive mechanism, self-fertilization allows an isolated individual to create a local population and stabilizes desirable genetic strains, but it fails to provide a significant degree of variability within a population and thereby limits the possibilities for adaptation to environmental change.
