I will never understand how some Discord mods will dislike you for no reason and just be so spiteful and hateful for no reason. Discord mods will literally play the victim when you call them out or return the same energy.

I'm nostalgic as hell for 2000's era forums. I participated in a number of them and people were generally cool. I was even a mod for an anime forum and, despite being a stupid teenager, I think I did a pretty okay job. I just told people to be nice to each other and they usually were. If things got heated I made an attempt to mediate between the users. If things got uncontrollable I locked the thread and privately messaged the people involved and asked them to cool off and be more respectful. I think I gave maybe six or seven temp bans for the 3 years I was a mod. Also if someone said my opinions were shit, I would respond by saying their opinions were shit and then we'd both just move on.

I got banned from a server for calling an artist "talented." Apparently that was offensive since it discredited "all the long hours they put into their craft."

Rule of thumb: if someone isn’t paid to do a job, they have no reason to do it correctly.

A good rule with discord and reddit is to just stay away from places with high amounts of people, for discord avoid the severs with more than 10k members and for reddit 100k members

I literally told a story about how my grandmother had an odd experience with a deceased friend leaving her a note and some money, yet they allowed a story about a girl's MOM having a dream about her grandmother and angles, or something like that. Went on 2 dates with a girl who was a mod for a Wiccan discord server. She was 24 had no job, wasn’t in school and had a kid who was in the dads custody. She was upset on our first date about how people were saying “black magic” instead of evil magic because it’s racist or whatever and went on about how stressful keeping everyone in line was. After I learned all this during our second date at her place I had my friend call me and pretend I had an emergency and dipped.

Ive dealt with the same thing. Alot of annoying discord mods are obsessed with abusing their power since they probably dont have control over anything else in their life so it makes them feel better. The last server i was in some mod kept deleting my messages literally for no reason even though it was in general and i mentioned something about an update to a game, then muted me after i retyped the deleted message. There was no context behind why it happened. It seems to be even more common in huge servers with tens of thousands of people, they arent friendly at all, have no chill and just treat you like a number

Both discord and Reddit mods are a fucking nightmare

I was in a Discord server for LEGO and Jurassic World, where we basically talked about the LEGO Jurassic sets and upcoming releases. I was one of the first people to have started the entire conversation as a group chat before it evolved into a server. And not long after it became a server I decided I would help out trying to make it the best it could be. I became an admin and was given owner access multiple times so I could edit the server and make it run more efficiently. Basically I made channel and server graphics, the entire server rules, and reorganized the entire server. Took a decent amount of time. Then the guy who was the one who actually did the simple 5 second act of creating the server started to have a literal mental breakdown as he began to insist we refer to him as a she and he started to pick fights with me. Eventually it got to a breaking point when I had the owner access and hadn’t given it back to him. I reasoned that it didn’t really matter who had owner access other than if you needed it to edit the server (for the better). I never abused owner or admin access and said that since I’m the one who makes all of the changes I should keep the owner access. He then started having a psycho fit. Eventually he manipulated me into thinking he needed to use the owner access to actually edit the server. So I gave it to him being reasonable. Then he revealed he lied to me to get it and he wouldn’t give it back. Then he had a mental breakdown publicly on the server and attempted to say I was trying to make him commit suicide and he removed my admin access and started banning people I had asked to push him to return the owner access. Then he went silent for several hours and everyone thought he actually killed himself. Naturally everyone called me the bad guy even though I wasn’t the one who banned people for no reason and had never done so and I literally never pushed or told him to kill himself. Then he finally got back on and returned the admin access to me only to revoke it again one day as he decided to rename every channel a weird femboi catboi name with uwu or owo in its name. Shit pissed me off so fucking bad. Pretty sure that day as soon as I was able to get admin access back I purged nearly all of my contributions to the server and left. Couldn’t take the BS anymore. And I didn’t even mention how over time all of the server member started to act like femboi and catboi weirdos and started saying weird shit in the middle of a conversation like how they wanted to suck on Bryce Dallas Howard’s milkers. Like wtf. Discord unfortunately is a breeding ground of incels imo.

If ever there was a platinum standard for online moderation, I would say look no further than Max Goldberg. A humble man of the people, but he knew when he needed to get his hands dirty to take out the trash. He was always in touch with what his users were joking about and was just super likeable and witty. One of my favorite examples of this was when Scholastic threatened to take him to court over the harry potter spoilers fad that swept through his site. He promptly responded with _"Real_ court? or Special Wizard's court?" or the time Neil Bauman threatened to sue him and their subsequent email exchange, Whang! does a really good video on it.

Oh, when you talked about the point about being banned for posting spoilers, it reminded me long ago where I got kicked/banned from a server for months because I spoiled something. The spoiler was Tails' cameo appearance in the Sonic Movie, that is the post-credits sequence that I wouldn't believe many would care about. Gum, I think the thing about forums is that you always had another forum you could go to if some janny in those forums turned into a Not-see moderator. Unfortunately now most of that discussion has centralized to one place. Everyone is on Discord, everyone is on Twatter, etc. If you get banned - well, you just got banned from the current public town square of discussion. So yeah, back then we still dealt with low self esteem power tripping moderators but we always had the option of going elsewhere. Even back in the 90s when I used bulletin board systems you could at least leave the BBS and move on to another one.

Someone in a Discord chat once asked what they can improve on on a recent illustration. So I pointed out that the whole picture overall seems incomplete. Knowing myself, I'm pretty lousy with constructive criticism, so I wasn't surprised when a mod told me I was being too vague with my feedback. But then the mod accused me of being "rude". At first, I just calmly told them that I wasn't trying to be rude and they're just misunderstanding but they didn't listen. And then a bunch of other people started defending with the mod and told me I was arguing with a mod as if that somehow automatically makes them in the right; I was not only being misrepresented as an asshole all because some mod was misconstruing my failure to properly provide constructive criticism as some form of downright malicious roasting, I was being pressured into acknowledging it as so. I got pissed at the mod for throwing accusations at me and was promptly banned from the server for it. True story. I think that mod needs to rethink what constitutes rude behavior.

As a discord mod, I really have to say this: I really like this video. The comparison to old forums kinda got me, because I am in this weird generational spot of being a member of a couple of those, but being too young to really participate. I liked this videos nuance about mods not being bad in general, but people are just power-tripping or being shitty. A friend once vented about some bullshit that happened to them with picture evidence in a channel dedicated to venting and shitposting, then 4 months later, a moderator picked up on it and decided to try to twist it into them literally harassing and defaming someone. They had a discussion almost a full year ago as of that interaction of the moderator who was using the wrong channels to publicly shame someone for no reason and with zero evidence when confronted about it. Some people just hold grudges for no god damned reason.

On Discord, I’ve only been invited to two private servers by a friend, run by their group of friends, so I have zero experience with these kind of moderators. All I know is that I’ve said a majority of the “rude” words multiple times (of course, nothing too far and always in a joking manner), I’ve talked about weird sh*t a lot and since on one of them there’s an #art channel where one of the members who is a literal furry posts constant furry eye bleach when they feel like it, I’ve posted my fair share of weird crap too. Still haven’t been banned or private DM’d yet with any warnings, so I’m guessing they’re (the mods, they’re different on each server) cool with mostly anything. These servers you talk about though... I’d be banned faster then I’d decide to leave out of sheer bewilderment.
