Discover the Historical Truth of Hanoi's LONG BIEN Bridge
Long Bien Bridge is the first steel bridge across the Red River connecting the two districts of Hoan Kiem and Long Bien of Hanoi. The bridge was built by France from 1899 to 1902 under the then Governor General of Indochina, Doumer. The bridge is 2290m long across the river and 896m long leading bridge, including 19 steel beam spans placed on 20 pillars with unique architecture. The bridge is designed with a single track running in the middle and two lanes for bicycles and pedestrians on both sides.
The interesting difference at Long Bien Bridge is that the motor vehicle movement lane is on the left hand side like the traffic law in the UK, not following the right hand movement law like in France.
To carry out the construction of the bridge, people had to recruit more than 3000 native workers and a team of about 40 French directors, engineers, experts and foremen to run the work. The project used up to 30,000 m3 of stone and metal at a cost of up to 6,200,000 French francs.
One thing that few people know about the bridge is that it was once the second longest bridge in the world (only after the Brooklyn Bridge over the East-River in the US), even called the horizontal Eiffel Tower. of Hanoi.
Over 100 years of history, the bridge stands there witnessing many important events of Vietnam and the world such as experiencing the first and second world wars, especially the birth history event. Democratic Republic of Vietnam 1945 when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence in Ba Dinh Square ending the feudal rule.
On the liberation of the capital, October 1954, Long Bien Bridge stood there to witness the joy of the nation at the end of the French colonial rule in Vietnam; and then 21 years later, the bridge once again witnessed the joy of independence and reunification.
