The Walk for Historical and Ecological Recovery (WHERE) is a year-long event series in 2024, a significant endeavor aimed at addressing the histories of colonization and oppression in Maine. Uncovering the roles of local Maine merchants and mariners in the slave trade, especially after its ban in 1808, has been a crucial part of recent Maine research. Efforts have also shed light on the specific entanglements of colonization, Indigenous genocide, land theft, and enslavement in the region, underscoring the importance of this event series.
Organized by our friends at Atlantic Black Box in collaboration with various partners, WHERE2024 is not just an event series, but a community engagement initiative. It involves walking, participatory archival research, storytelling, and artistic interventions, all designed to encourage your active participation. Join Meadow Dibble, Founder and Executive Director of Atlantic Black Box, and Lilah Akin of In Kinship Collective, to learn more about this initiative that seeks to uncover and discuss the region’s historical realities, fostering truth-seeking and transformative dialogues.
