I think the reason why Chenle got less lines during their early days is because his Korean is not that good yet. He only trained for 3 months before debuting with Dream as a main vocalist. Chenle has been great since he was a child, he's been on shows and he even had an own solo concert. Renjun on the other hand, I think had the most growth and improvement as a vocalist and as an artist. Renjun auditioned as a dancer btw but he has now improved to the point of being one of NCT's main vocalists ☺️

I think one big reason with Mark&Haechan having more lines/focus in the beginning is their experience because they were in 2+ units. While 5Dream (Mark,Jeno,Haechan,Jaemin,Jisung) also had experience during their trainee days from the Mickey Mouse Club, Mark & Haechan were still given more chances to hone their craft as they were Main rapper & vocalist. I think 3Js were still not comfortable with their abilities just yet as seen from the recording diaries. As for Renjun & Chenle. Chenle had performance experience but he had less than a year to learn Korean and dance. He has amazing vocal abilities which was why he was added last minute with Renjun. SM was the one that reached out to Chenle's family, Chenle had no interest in the kpop industry prior to that. For Renjun, he entered SM as a dancer and trained hard to attain his current position as main vocalist. Also, Mark&Haechan have both mentioned how Dream was not supposed to debut. Luckily, Renjun & Chenle joined SM and 7Dream was made. This kind of gives us an idea that 5Dream, though extremely talented, was not all completely ready for debut; especially when you see Haechan would be the only vocalist if they debut as 5Dream so Renjun & Chenle were necessary pieces to their puzzle. Dream is a really interesting group because it's the closest thing in kpop that we have to what we see in the west where a group of friends worked to become musical artists. We were also able to watch them grow and develop their skills. And we're still waiting to see where those skills end up because they still young and growing.

18:48 as renjun’s fan I really appreciate your comment about renjun here and i hope others don’t take it the wrong way! i think i know exactly what you mean here and i also felt a similar way watching him over the years :) imo it’s really important to remember that renjun is the dream member with the least stage experience - chenle of course has a lot of experience with being onstage from being a child singer, and the rest of dream were all sm rookies for a few years and got a lot of experience there (+ some of them were childc stars before that too) - renjun is certainly very confident and a great performer, but I definitely think he’s still finding himself! and of course that’s ok, in fact as a fan it really touches my heart to watch him improve so much over the years. more than that tho i think renjun also has a really unique appeal - I find its hard for people to really describe him accurately and he doesn’t really fall into any common images for idols either (for example, mark has that boy next door vibe, haechan makes use of both a devil maknae image w/ 127 and a mischievous older brother image with dream, nomin both kind of fall into the athletic visual rappers type, etc) because of that i think it’s even more difficult for him to figure out how to market himself, especially in stage performances when so much of that is happening in the subtleties of their expressions and their movements. and I don’t think sm really helps on that either lol I find the way they push renjun in terms of the styling he gets very confusing at times hahaha so i feel like they haven’t really “given” him much of an image either or at least they don’t know where to go with it. I remember during boom era i personally felt there was a ton of growing pain - it was their first comeback as 6dream since mark’s graduation, haechan had an injury before this and the rest of dream were basically doing nothing for MONTHS before boom. on top of that it was almost a completely new style for them - boom was the first time i felt dream were really going for a darker, sexier and more mature concept. (GO was darker but in my opinion it was still very youthful and lively - “freshness” I think is the running factor from chewing gum to we go up, and is the signature dream sound.) for some of them, I think this was a great transition (for example it was pretty great for haechan who i feel always gets cute styling and gives me the feeling he reaaaaally wants to be sexy lol) but for renjun i definitely was also feeling the hesitance and i don’t think he was fully comfortable with it (in the sense that i think he didn’t know how to make the concept work for him fully.) i agree with you that renjun has always had a more fluid and somewhat feminine style of expression (praise because i love that about him!!!) and i don’t think it’s ever really been intentional, that’s just how he is naturally (for example, even in boom he performs the song very gracefully even when his expressions are a bit put on). So in my eyes what he really needed was to figure out how to craft a unique image out of those parts of him - and this is why I think he’s really been shining SO MUCH this year from hot sauce to hello future!! especially in hot sauce, the new hair style for him felt like such an amazing and appropriate choice - a little edgy and brought sort of a feminine touch to his image styling that I think works sooooo so well for him! and then in hello future, even without the hairstyle he represented the concept of dreams older original concept, but made to be modern and fitting their adult selves so amazingly too! More than ever before i feel like he’s more confident, more secure, and kind of has created a definitive place for himself within dream (image wise!) that he didn’t necessarily have before. especially after seeing him on the dream mental camp show i couldn’t be happier watching him, it’s just like watching him bloom so beautifully! of course it’s just the beginning tho, and i can’t wait to see where he goes from here...! sorry for the super long comment i just love renjun lol :’)

How are you so spot on omg? The way I could never try to describe Renjun using my own thoughts and words but reading this comments made me shocked bcs there are really people like you out here who are so observing and also so great with their words. And I so much agree with you that Hot sauce and Hello future era really did bring the best of Renjun and he looked so much more confident and content with himself. Sm should just let him be himself and be comfortable in what he is doing bcs sometimes I feel like they push him towards something that he doesn't really feel like doing or has any interest in it but has to somehow do it anyway (It'd ofc be their debut era). But I feel so happy now to see how much he've grown up and become his own person. It's been months that I started to ult him and I've seen so much growth. I feel frustrated at myself bcs I was with them since their debut (127, U and Dream) but I didn't have the energy to stan them as well bcs I was ulting Bts and BP at that time so I can say that I left the fandom. But now, I've found my way back to my home, my loves. I've never been happier!!!

I obviously don’t know him, but-personally, I don’t even think his personal concepts of femininity and masculinity are the same as society's. He's just himself, and is willing to try a lot of things to discover what he is and what he isn’t. To be honest, I wouldn’t call him “fluid”, nor “masculine” or “feminine”, just Renjun. He's been insisting on how important it is his self identity, even by rejecting the popularization of MBTI in Korea. I empathize so much with him, so I respect a lot who he is right now and I would love to see who he’s going to be in the future. He's a wonderful person. I love him so much too

They definitely did dress "down" the boys in Chewing Gum to make them all seem younger than they already were. Mark was 17 at the time, Jisung was 14, Chenla 15, and the other 4 were 16 but the MV they all looked closer to 13/14. I think they were trying to differentiate them from the the NCT 127 and NCT U image and put emphasis that these are the "teenagers" of the group. I think it's also a good test on how well these boys can "morphe" and blend in with each unit/concept. Like you have Mark and Haechan here looking like 14 year old boys but they had also debuted a month prior with NCT 127 with a more mature "older" concept with "Firetruck" and blended in fine with them.

18:48 Nice observation there. I think that's why you said that it's because Renjun was struggling by himself that time. He confessed it recently that there was a time that he was questioning/doubting himself, what he's doing etc. And he took drawing lessons that year and it was revealed also later that it's actually his therapy. He has cam on NCT Dream talking about his drawing for the first time and nobody knows esp czennie that it is actually his therapy. Members esp dreamies who knew him very well always reminding him to not keep doubting himself. He is actually the most sensitive and sentimental member of NCT Dream and psychiatrists on one of the show (Mental Camp) they'd been guest to said that he is more prone to feel lonely even tho he is with his members because of his rare personality which is correct. That's why I am still so proud of him during Boom era cause even tho he's struggling all by himself he still delivered and understood the assignment. I just hope that he's okay now and i think this 2021 he is muh more confident of himself cause many people/reactors noticed/praised/appreciated him this year which I love to hear the most💛.

I think the main reason that haechan and mark get a lot of spotlight in the earlier stuff, besides from generally being good, is that their voices were the ones that matured first, the rest of them i would say go to pretty drastic voice changes besides maybe renjun, but im assuming that because their voices were still changing they didnt give them super big parts until they mostly settled? i cant be sure but thats just my analisis of the situation. jaemin is of course not there bc he had a back injury and was recuperating

chenle was given less amount of lines in early songs especially my first and last because he still can't speak korean well that time. he relied on renjun and jisung the most... renjun being his personal translator and jisung as his korean language teacher. from what i've noticed, chenle was always given the chorus to sing since his voice is the most stable in live performances and it changed really late (around late 2018 up to early 2020) unlike his co-members who experienced it around 2017-2018. there was a compilation vid here on KZfaq wherein chenle sings the whole chorus of "we young" alone while the others are using mr since most of dream members are on the process of changing their voices. chenle has always been a great vocalist, him debuting 3 months after joining sm is proof enough (sm saw him participating in a chinese singing competition and decided to call him to join the company). chenle was a classically trained vocalist with experiences in musicals and opera when he was a kid. due to this, we acknowledge him as a music star and child prodigy. however, some people still put him below the list of best vocalists in nct just because they don't hear him belting high notes on tracks.

On the contrary, I believe Haechan and Mark also have come a long way. Haechan and Chenle were the only ones that entered the company as vocalists, but Chenle was really young and his voice was quite immature yet, and his Korean wasn’t that good. Renjun entered the company as a dancer, and his vocal skills developed later but at light speed. Renjun in those old songs wasn’t a main vocalist yet, and look at him now! You could hear Mark sing a lot then because they needed those vocals. Jisung was literally a baby when he started training. Usually, they don’t accept trainees that young (Kai was rejected and told he was too young when he first auditioned), but Jisung has always been special.

"Chewing Gum" is NCT-Dream's debut song, so you are right, they are very young in this MV. Mark is the oldest at 17, so he is the"leader" of this sub-unit and Jisung is the youngest at 14. NCT-Dream includes Mark (17), RenJun, (16), Jeno (16), Haechan (16), Jaemin (16), Chenle (14) and Jisung (14). SM originally created this sub-unit with the idea that If they had a trainee that they felt was ready to debut even though they were really young, they would start out as a member of NCT-Dream. They were the cute babies of the group who were learning the ropes and honing their skills because they are young, but they are also some of the most talented because they debuted way sooner than a lot of trainees. Jisung is the one who had the dance break. He is the main dancer of NCT-Dream and one of the best dancers in NCT. He is actually known for his popping an locking skills and for the fact that he is sort of a mini Taemin. Jisung pretty much took the exact same path as an SM trainee as Taemin did and Taemin says he sees a lot of his younger self in Jisung. Both Jisung and Taemin became trainees around age 11 and they both debuted at age 14, they both have similar dancing styles and they both pretty much sacrificed their childhood to become an Idol, etc. Fun fact: Although Mark is young here, he is the same age as you saw him in NCT-U's "The 7th Sense" and in NCT-127's "Fire Truck" -- which were each sub-unit's debut songs. All three of these songs and MVs came out within a couple of months of each other in 2016. But because of the different concepts and styles of the songs, you get a chance to see how versatile Mark really is as an artist and how he can embrace all sides of himself -- he changes up his style depending on which group he is with at the time. The guy who is playing the school's head student or leader in this MV, is not a member of NCT -- as far as I know he is just an actor. You definitely need to check out NCT-Dream's hoverboard version of "Chewing Gum." They have special choreography that incorporates the use of hoverboards and it's really impressive. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqiPpqaQxL-ad5c.html As you saw with "Chewing Gum," they started out with a very young and cute concept that fit the fact that they were all teenagers. But over the years their style and concept has grown and evolved like the members of the group. The whole point of the song and the concept of the group is to appeal to fans in their age group. Kpop is full of young groups who are trying to appeal to an older, more mature audience. So I think SM Entertainment was pretty clever to created this sub-unit as a way to appeal to a younger demographic. Why not market music to a younger audience? I think it's kind of refreshing that SM decided to start NCT-Dream out with more of a family-friendly concept because all the members were actually still children. NCT was created as part of SM's plan to achieve global domination and one of the ways the company plans to accomplish that is to make music that reaches all types of fans all over the world, including younger fans. As you are starting to discover, as you go along and see some of NCT-Dream's more recent material, you have seen and heard how their style as grown and changed over time. That is also part of the group's concept. As the members grow and mature so to does there sound and style. SM's no dummy when it comes to creating groups that gain global popularity. It just goes to show you why its one of the Big 3 entertainment companies in the world. :D Instead of creating a group with a sound and style like everyone else, why not do something a little different? This was a great concept for a debut. By keeping their style and sound young, light and fun, NCT-Dream became popular because they were different then all the other groups that were out there at the time. Fans appreciated them for the fact that they embraced their age and didn't try to act and sound older then they were.

Ok so in regards to the absence of riffs and runs and crazy vocals, I think there’s several reasons. Firstly that style of singing wouldn’t appeal to their target demographic which was like age 10-16 at the time. Songs that are easy to sing along to would be more the thing. However Haechan has always had a natural flair for the dramatics. Secondly the boys were still going through puberty and like you noted, their voices changed dramatically. There are actually many running jokes about their voices cracking during live performances lol. Also Mark and Haechan had “main” positions in the group and that was reflected in the line distribution. Renjun and Chenle are also main vocalists but they had only joined SM 3 months before their debut whereas the others had been trainees for years then SM Rookies before debut, so that also impacted their allocated lines. An additional reason for the perceived higher quality output for Mark and Haechan is that they had already also debuted with 127 at this point, had released and promoted the first album with Firetruck (you saw how insane that choreo was) and were promoting the Limitless comeback. So they were getting double, maybe triple the amount of practice time compared to the other dreamies, and also getting to develop range in a wide variety of styles across the 127 and Dream tracks.

Added Chenle only had a few months to learn how to dance, then they added HOVERBOARDS! Chewing Gum live is performed on them. Originally Dream learned just dance, but then the CEO wanted choreo with Hoverboards so the Dreamies had their debut delayed & had to relearn everything. It really shows how Chenle is a prodigy. I mean all of Dream is amazing for being able to pick everything up so quick, but Chenle didn't know the language or how to dance & got put in the unit with literally the hardest choreography. That's a whole different level.

There were times when lines distribution was not that great, like in My First and Last. Take a look at Limitless (same year with MFAL), Haechan only got 1 line there 😅 i don't really think it got anything to do with their skills/level. Mark, Haechan, Jeno, Jaemin, and Jisung were Baby-Shinki (young version of DBSK/TVXQ? CMIIW). They were praised for their talents since SM rookies. Renjun, as we all know is a great at whatever he does, and Chenle does have some experience on stages, tho he's not yet fluent in Korean. SM put Jisung on a few dancing shows- Dancing High and Why Not The Dancer? Taemin and Eunhyuk (SuJu) were also on Why Not The Dancer as the senior SM dance representatives. Eunhyuk mentored Taemin and that show felt like a way for Taemin and Eunhyuk to mentor Jisung. A few times they called Jisung the future of SM dance. He even debuted around the same age as Taemin did (14). It’s really unfortunate that Jisung injured himself because it prevented him from dancing for a while. Chenle and Jisung are the best Dream duo.

Oh my boys, I love watching people fall in love with them :D Yeah, centering Jisung at the debut was an intentional thing. He had years of experience dancing and performing on camera at this point even though he was only 14. And SM was really showing their "youngest ever debuter" (he just beat out Taemin for the youngest SM debut). Definitely take time someday to watch them perform this live on their hoverboards. It was a risky decision and it really made an impact and its just so challenging physically. All their choreos are so amazing and some of the most athletic and exhausting that NCT does. They went very gently with the vocals, partly just because the boys are young. Their voices are still changing and SM has excellent vocal training that would work with their voices through puberty and then help develop them as they grew into their grown up sound. That transition of the voice in the teen years is always tricky and they always gave them songs with a style and range they could do well.

I honestly think the reason why Mark and Haechan were more in the spotlight in their earlier releases is because their voices settled pretty early on, like you said when u heard them on chewing gum, haechan's voice sounds almost the same so did mark. while the other members voices were still developing and were more prone to voice cracks and such. If you'll notice,Haechan in 127 from earlier releases got lesser lines and only started gaining main vocal status in 127 around 2019.

Because "Boom" came out in 2019, there were only 6 members in NCT-Dream. Mark "graduated" in 2018 from NCT-Dream and he was no longer included in NCT-Dream activities. You won't see Mark back with NCT-Dream until the end of 2020 when the released their song "Deja Vu." The whole point of "Boom" is to show how much the Dream members have grown and matured, etc. I always find it funny that Jisung, who is the maknae of NCT, is the member who is the tallest and the one with the deepest voice. "Boom" is where we see Jisung turn from a boy into a young man.

I think one of the main reasons you don't immediately notice the improvement of mark and haechan vs the rest of dream is mainly because the other members have a very drastic voice change so it's easier to recognize the difference, whereas mark and haechan (specifically haechan) also went through voice changes but it may not sound as drastic? Idk, personally I can hear the change in haechan's voice and I think he's improved soo much and will continue to do so just as the rest of dream!!! They're all different from where they started and I can't wait to see them grow more and more

Mark and Haechan's voices changed the least so their voices already broke. They were also training with 127 which is why sm had more confidence in them. Chenle came to korea 2-3 months before he debuted, he didn't know korean at all. Jaemin was absent in MFAL, but he didn't have any confidence in his voice when it was breaking. Jeno was Jeno, he got lines, but surely grew and improved. As for Renjun, he auditioned as a dancer not a vocal, you can see the most growth in him as an artist. His vocals are now insane and he is unique like you said.

I will always feel like a proud auntie just seeing how much the Dreamies have literally grown. I remember watching them as legit children during their SM Rookies days in 2013-2015. SM didn’t even allow them to sing back then because their voices were still breaking, so they just always danced. And yes, the older half of NCT, especially Taeyong and Doyoung, have always been fiercely protective of the Dreamies because they were the babies of the company. There’s always a Dreamie latching on to either Taeyong or Doyoung whenever the occasion permits.

I do kind of agree with you! i love Mark but when it was just always him and Haechan getting the spotlight they weren't growing (talent wise and popularity wise). Im glad that Mark had graduated from dream, because that led to them showing SM and to fans that they have talent too, Jeno stepped up as the leader and main rapper and the members depended on him a lot during that time, Jaemin was also seen and appreciated as the visual, dancer and sub rapper that he is and still has growing popularity until now, Renjun and Chenle has showed multiple times on why they deserved the main vocal position as well and Jisung being appreciated more, has been growing as their ace, and like their debut is having spotlights again. Because of what they showcased in the two years were Mark was absent and Haechan was in and out of the group, that led to their present were they are given equal lines, screen time and spotlights to showcase their talent.

I think what you talked about as ability levels in first and last and chewing gum was due more to age, of course Mark and Haechan were the most polished at 18 their voices had matured, Jisung was just 14, his voice hadn’t even dropped yet, and many of the others at 15 and 16 still didn’t have settled voices.

Line Distributions during early NCT eras is really not equal. I can agree that it might made other members improve. Or, it could be that since they are younger they might not have found their individual style and sound. But that doesn't make them less talented than other members. Sometimes a song just has an aura and color that fits a certain member. The reason why i love NCT is because it has many members you get to explore more from them and the variety will always be interesting.

My First and Last is still one of my fave Dream songs (and it was NCT's first ever music show win). The track videos are just short length videos to highlight b-sides that they won't be promoting. These are the only visuals of Dreaming, Miracle and Earthquake were going to get. There are a few things to keep in mind regarding Dream. They were literally 14-17 when they debuted (Jisung was 14 and Mark 17). Mark was always going to be a focal point because SM (absolutely and rightfully) loves him and Chewing Gum was his THIRD(!!!) debut in 3 months. He was preparing for Chewing Gum while also prepping The 7th Sense and Fire Truck! He is the most seasoned of the Dreamies (and probably of NCT other than Taeyong). Five years in a teenage boy's life changes A LOT. Haechan's fantastic yet the sound of his voice hasn't changed much with puberty like the other's voices have (he has more control etc but he sounds basically the same as he did at 16). They all sound markedly different EXCEPT Haechan so he was more prominent as he was likely the most vocally stable for title tracks (b-sides are always more evenly distributed). Jisung was the only main dancer in Dream when they debuted (Mark and Jeno are officially main dancers now as well, I believe). Even at 14, his reputation around the company for his dance was extremely high (and still is). So glad he's not injured and can participate fully in NCT 2021 performances. Due to the fact Dream was focused on a much younger audience, centering your super talented maknae was another focal selling point for Dream. I'm a Nanadoongie (Jaemin is my 7Dream bias 😂) and considering his nearly two year hiatus for a back injury, it's great to see him recognised beyond his (elite) visuals. I think the reason why Dream are the most popular NCT unit is because the audience grew with them and we've been witness to their growth as they matured. They may be the only group where that's happened. We literally watched them grow into men 😂😂!

I think yes and no to the spotlight thing. I think definitely when you have more opportunity it gives you a chance to rise to the occasion . I feel like initially you do give your stronger members a lot of the heavy lifting at first. I think where SM messes up is when that perpetuates in to year 3 and 4, like that's not okay. I think they were all pretty good dance wise from the beginning, but some members were stronger vocally/ stage presence wise imo. I love them all so much and I love where they are now, they each have grown so much. Also when Mark graduated you his absence really let Jeno and Jaemin have to carry more load and they shone when given more. So in short I think it's okay to chose the more ready members initially but once you crossing over into year late 2nd year to 3rd year of debut you need to give more so those members can prove to you that they are capable of rising to the occasion and 9 time out of 10 they will meet and exceed those expectations.

26:00 I think it's true about what you said but as for me..the thing is....Haechan got lots of spotlight in their title tracks, his voice is more of an R&B type and got an unique tone and he's good in runs and riffs...Renjun gets more highlighted in ballad songs because he is more of an emotional singer...Chenle stays the same in both, sometimes he even raps and he's the most stable singer...So I think according to the concepts, the highlights are different according to their skills...Dream got 3 Main Vocals with different styles so of course someone will get more spotlight in different songs..

Yea Mark and Haechan had the most opportunities so they definitely had it. But when they couldn’t make it and 5D performed we really got to see how well the others actually do when given the chance. They definitely grew as well but I don’t think they were ever challenged until Mark left and they had to prove themselves again. I also don’t think their vocal parts were always highlighting them it felt very much like Mark and Haechan got the most consideration and everyone else was in the supporting role. It also doesn’t help that they only cb once a year and 5D wasn’t given any side music to release so I feel like their growth was sudden when we heard Jisung’s low beautiful tone in I don’t need your love SM station song.

imo, the reason why mark and haechan are highlighted during dream's early years might be because their level might be a bit higher than the other members especially with their voices since they both have sounded almost the same now,and also the reason why aside from dream they were in a fixed unit also which is 127. though i must say that the gap was not thst big since if you will see haechan during the early years of 127 he almost has no lines and he was always in the sidelines in the choreo. meanwhile dream is supposed to be a *transition" unit for the other members with their age bracket into another unit the reason why it had a graduating system and mark temporarily leaving the group. dream becoming a fixed unit might be not just because of fans not wanting to split up the remaining members and wanting to bring back the graduated mark to the group but also, because sm might not have found trainees who are good enough to debut under the dream umbrella. haechan's improvement can be clearly seen in 127 with having almost no lines to now being a main vocal. mark has always got people's attention but has always worked hard. all the guys have just worked soooo hard they reached a level of greatness, if they were not constantly improving.

the only persons in my opinion who’s voice was pretty much the same throughout is Mark and Haechan. Mark’s singing voice was just slightly higher but his rapping voice was pretty similar to how it is now- He debuted with NCT U’s The 7th Sense along with Taeyong Ten Jaehyun and Doyoung (most iconic debut ever) and his rapping voice was a so amaizng then he did Firetruck with 127 and then Chewing Gum with the dreamies [yes he debuted three times in 2016] [The 7th Sense was the first NCT song. That was NCT’s debut song. Like- NCT U debuted first- that song- I still can’t believe they debuted with that masterpiece like wth😭] Haechan’s voice when talking changed however his singing voice pretty much had the same tone throughout and just got more powerful as he got older Jaemin Jeno and Jisung’s voices had major changes tbh😭 Renjun and Chenle’s voices sound a lot fuller now then they used too if that makes sense it doesn’t sound as light as it would when they were little😭😭 Their ages were 14-17 Mark being 17 Renjun,Jeno,Haechan and Jaemin being 16 [the 00liners) Chenle- he was 14 but he was turning 15 that year Jisung was 14😭 Jaemin isn’t in MFAL because he had a herniated disc- and he had to go on hiatus until 2018 MFAL came out in 2017 so he was on hiatus for about a year [He came back from hiatus with NCT DREAM’s “GO” which is on the NCT2018 album ‘Empathy’ ] My First and Last actually won NCT there first ever show win- like obviously it won the dreamies their first win But NCT as a whole hadn’t gotten any awards until My First and Last Boom was the dreamies first comeback after Mark left as well as. It was the first song they put out to show that they were growing up- With the dreamies concept they were basically going through childhood to where they are now to put it in a very simple and straightforward way. BOOM was the first era into them being grown up and no longer babies ig Jaemin is actually one of Dream’s lead dancers but it isn’t showcased as much sadly😭😭but he is an amazing dancer😭thank you for noticing that not a lot of a people do🥲

Imo, Haechan and Mark got a lot of part in their old song because they ahead from other member at that time. Like Jeno, Renjun and Jaemin's voice already settles down at that time. Only Chenle and Jisung change voice. Most people won't admitted it because they feel it downgraded other member. But for me, isn't that more impressive. Look at them now, Renjun and Chenle especially shine so much in this album. Renjun level up as main vocal during We Go Up. He's my bias and I'm proud of him. Also, I've seen people gave praise to Jeno saying he's improve so much during NCT 2020. I'm glad that we can see their improvement from Chewing Gum to Hot Sauce and I'm not embarrassed of their past vocal or rap at all because thats the function of NCT Dream before graduation concept was abolished.

I think you're right about Mark & Haechan being at the forefront in the early songs and thus also shining more in the early songs. Other people have mentioned various reasons for this, and I also don't really begrudge that it was that way back then (and I love My First and Last! it's such a unique song and the choreo is one of my faves). But myself, I noticed that this actually was true for quite a while... especially with rap - of course, it's understandable that when you have such an absolute *monster* like Mark that you will want to use him a lot, but I think up until his graduation in 2018 (!), Mark was just very... overpowering? whereas all the vocalists at least got more spotlight, not just Haechan. And I love all of them, but in my opinion, despite how it obviously sucked for them and for the fans, that the period without Mark was when we actually started to get more equal distribution - since he couldn't steal the spotlight with his insane rapping abilities, and also since Haechan was quite often busy with 127 (even with Boom, if you watch the MV, you'll see that some of the choreo is recorded with only five of them, and they have very often performed as five), they couldn't keep relying on their "aces", and thus more spotlight, more opportunity was given to the rest of the boys, who absolutely stepped up to the task. I think it's true, what you said about how more opportunity leads to more hard work! (not to say they weren't hardworking before, but when you ARE given the opportunity, you will work ten times as hard, won't you?) And it REALLY shows in Hot Sauce and Hello Future, because literally everyone in there gets a chance to shine and show off! (which is understandably hard when you have 7 members, but they did show it's possible!!)

i think the reason why mark and haechan had more spotlight in the earlier years was apart from theyre already great, its also because they already had more experience? also, i think i read this analysis somewhere that while mark and haechan (and renjun much later on) auditioned to get into sm, the rest were scouted. jisung and chenle had experience from young but jeno and jaemin had no thoughts of being a performer until they got into sm? but still, they trained hard to get into where they are now and have all the qualities of a great performer. as for vocals, renjun auditioned through dance actually 😅 i believe he wasnt a main vocalist until few years after debut because he improved his singing so much! also, he didnt had as much training time as the rest of the members (he even saw the rest already performing on tv before he got to audition) before debut. but he trained really hard to become a main vocal and lead dancer of dream now :) as a stan, its kinda nice to actually witness all the improvement renjun had since debut till now.

Can I ask why you skip some music videos? While I enjoy reactions to live stages (even though they are more likely to get you copyrighted), the music video is what EVERYTHING stems from in kpop, so by skipping them you're missing out on the actual concept of the era... particularly something like My First and Last where there's an entire story going on in the music video.

I trust SM with knowing what they are doing, and Mark and Heachan were ahead of the rest and still remain ahead… my thoughts! 😀
