Are the batteries easily interchangeable and chargeable off the motor to have spares? If so, what is the weight of the battery and it's cost? Also, what is the life of the battery? How many charge cycles will it take before it begins to degrade? Thank you.
@mysql50
@mysql50 5 жыл бұрын
Ideally I would like something in the 25-30HP and 5 hour flight time. But to use a 30hp 1800rpm electric motor for 5 hours is going to require some 27K AH of battery capacity (Top of head math). That is significant but not unreasonable. Running 4x 12K AH LP batteries with voltage steppers will only add another KG of weight and the motor is not that much, so less then a gas powered engine. but the whole set up is is just over $2K before the rest of the gear and you are looking at a charge time of about 5 hours as well.
@SternLX
@SternLX 5 жыл бұрын
Charge on the J1772 EV Standard and you cut recharge down to 1 hour easy. Oh and EV batteries are measured in kWh these days. Put a 7.2kWh Battery pack with current state-of-the-art lithium-ion cells behind a 25 kW(about 34-35hp) brushless motor and it'll easily run wide open with a low load for about 2 or 2.5 hours. Also a prop is going to pull much less amperage than the drive train and weight of a vehicle uses. But you don't fly a butt fan with the throttle pinned 100% of the time so flight time can easily be extended. Plus if you set it up properly you can have the prop windmilling and recharging the battery. Kind of like regenerative braking.
@grejen711
@grejen711 5 жыл бұрын
@@SternLX Recharging with a windmilling prop will be very inefficient and ineffective; the result will be tons of drag. There is almost never any good reason to intentionally induce drag when you're flying except to actually do the flying part. If you want to go slower you trade that speed for altitude.

I don't mean this in any smart alack way, but can you (or someone) explain what the advantage is of an electric paramotor? It's not flight time, it's not weight, it's not noise, it's not expense, it's not time between flights....am I missing something here?? I mean that seriously. At the moment I don't see any reason whatsoever to buy one of these vs. a regular gas powered paramotor. Happy to hear a legitimate explanation though. Thanks.

I could think of one, I guess. You can spin down completely at anytime during your flight instead of idling. Then you can nearly instantly spin back up when needed. But that's just about it. Most would be better off with a gas unit otherwise.

@@HobkinBoi I see, thank you for the comment. Yeah seems a minor thing. I just don't understand the push for electric, unless it's a need to "go green" so people can pat themselves on the back or whatever. I fly RC foam planes, so I know all about lipos and electric motors, but as far as paramotors go, it just makes zero sense to me, at least at the current level of technology.
@HobkinBoi
@HobkinBoi 5 жыл бұрын
@@joesmith6442 Well, unless you're charging the battery pack from a solar array or a wind turbine, which would probably need to be of substantial size to charge at a reasonable rate, then it could be for green. Maybe its useful where you're running off grid.

Joe Smith.. I don't think it's about being green at all.. Seems to me reliability, ease of operation, motor longevity and the overall reduction of failure points (plugs, wires, carburetion, fuel mixture, exhaust leak issues etc) would ALL be great selling points for an electric motor.. Just my two cents..

flexible solar panels are a thing but they arent as efficient as normal ones. even if you cover the whole top of the wing you might get 300 - 350w but it also depends on the angle of the sun to the cells. with the motor likely being 50,000W+ its really not worth it for the added weight. now if you can steal one of NASA's radioisotopes AKA RTG and willing to carry such a device (impossible to to explode could leak radiation if damaged in a crash) you could possibly fly for 30+ years straight. weight might be an issue though. dont quote me on flight time. You would have to be constantly battling winds or out running storms. just not worth it.

Five hours!?! LOL this is for recreation. You're bladder last five hours does it? The regular 2 stroke motors used for this typically carry fuel for 2 or 2.5 hours max. Cessna 172 carries about 4 hours fuel (although it does fly at 90-100kts indicated instead of the 15 or so PPG flys at)

@@grejen711 You still get longer flight time on gas though at the least. Also I dont know about you, but unless you're chugging water at every given moment, I can hold for 5 hours if need be. Now if you want longer flight time, you'd have to have a bigger fuel tank, but I believe you're limited to how much you can carry on the paramotor (5 gallons I believe?) Really cant see the point, no advantages at all. Heavy, still noisy, short flight times. In our sport you cant plan flights too far ahead . Lipos cant be left fully charged, so you charge night before, then weather is cack so have to put batterys into storage voltage. Oh but then weather gets better so recharge the battery, nope cant fly ........... Fast charge kills batterys, so still long recharge times. Just no where near ready. This is aviation , who wound swap from a very reliable 2 stroke , can xc almost anywhere and get more fuel etc. Get a grip, future my ass

@vaprex
@vaprex 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, @gwkdad This is one of the reasons that free market capitalism (by itself) may not be enough to push the emerging technologies forward. Yes, e-paramotors are a niche market. The same could be said for electric cars several years ago. Not to get political (...sadly everything is viewed as such these days) - but if we had given the same financial incentives on developing more powerful, smaller, and lighter batteries (and/or all renewable energy technologies) as we did to large oil corporations for the past several decades, we may already have your "cheap and serviceable 3-hour flight paramotor." The private sector has definitely progressed (slowly) on battery technology & performance, but it seems if we devoted more explicit and intentional focus on the ability to store energy (i.e. batteries) all of future society would be better off. ...but, as they said in 'Raising Arizona': "If frogs had wings, they wouldn't bump their ass hoppin' "

There are hundreds if not more Companies trying to improve battery Tech, its kinda like cancer, they need a big break through to get any where, Yes they will sooner or later get there. Maybe 50 years from now, Good thing is everything will change, tho that will take time also. You see alot of promising ideas, but they go nowhere. But alot of money is directed in that direction, so all we can do is hope for a break through. Its the biggest hang up to moving forward as we type.

You guys are so far off the pulse. Seriously. There's one great thing about free market capitalism that drives development that you seem to have overlooked, Competition. Just look at how the world's leading Motor Vehicle Manufacturers have reacted to the success of the Elons Tesla. Sure, there's been some problems with the business model and long delays with deliveries, but full electric as a successful concept has the rest of the industry frantically trying to catch up so they can claim their share of the market. If you think battery tech is still 50 years from its potential you've got your head in the sand.
@charlesmiller5078

We were typing about Para motors not your God Elon. When a new Tech is truly great it totally takes over quickly. Tesla is a mess. Dont get me wrong, I hope battery tech explodes (sorry didnt mean to use that word) quickly, but be honest do you see that happening. Were using the same type batteries in our cars as we did 50 years ago, Yea...were moving right along. Have you been smoking dope with Elon, come on be honest, cause it sure sounds like it. Let me guess you Love Apple also. I knew it. FAN BOY.
@notsponsored103
@notsponsored103 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sure we can keep this discussion civil. I know we're talking about PPG, I'm not a FAN BOY and I don't use Apple products. What defines 'quickly' is surely a relative concept. I used the battery revolution gripping the auto industry as evidence that my points are valid. Several brand new vehicle manufacturers have joined the full electric industry. The Bollinger B1 is a perfect example of what can be accomplished in an environment where nobody would have expected electric to go yet. Check it out here www.bollingermotors.com I'd say battery tech is certainly moving quickly in the Auto Industry. As for PPG, all I can say is watch this space, you can bet there's some cool stuff to follow.
