Discovery of India Ep. 4 | Buddha’s begging bowl | Sopara Stupa | First Indian Archeologist

Nala Sopara, around 70 kms from Mumbai, was “Surparaka” of antiquity, the Capital of "Aparanta", as Konkan was then known and it has a continuous reference in literature from 500 B.C. to 1500 A.D.. An important sea port of Ancient India, it saw traffic of various nationalities, so much so that Emperor Ashok deemed it a place worthy of his Edicts and deputed “Yavana Dhammarakshita”, a Greek Buddhist, to preach Buddhism in Sopara and Konkan. It was here that a Stupa was erected to enshrine thirteen pieces of Lord Buddha’s begging bowl. Bhagwan Lal Indraji, the first Indian Archeologist, excavated the site in April 1882. The Relics are safely kept with Asiatic Society, Mumbai ever since. Some pieces were gifted to Sri Lanka to be enshrined in a Stupa on Adam’s Peak there. This video helps peep into our past and catch glimpses of India’s continuous history.

Your entire series is absolutely brilliant. I am a First Generation South African of Indian Origin. I speak Hindi, Urdu and Tamil. However, most South African Indians no longer speak any Indian Language. So your hard work is lost in translation as a result of the fact that you do not have subtitles. Most of my non-Indian friends also would find your work very engaging, but I sat interpreting your first episode for them. far too much hard work. Please subtitle your work so that I can share it more widely.

This is how history should be presented not in school textbooks with emphasis of dates. Very well done!! At 12:22 you can see square bricks with english letters on them. So most likely all those square bricks are no more than 200 years old. Questions is what are they doing here?
