The Lockheed Constellation ("Connie") was a propeller-driven airliner powered by four 18-cylinder radial Wright R-3350 engines. It was built by Lockheed between 1943 and 1958 at its Burbank, California, USA, facility. A total of 856 aircraft were produced in numerous models, all distinguished by a triple-tail design and dolphin-shaped fuselage. The Constellation was used as a civilian airliner and as a U.S. military air transport, seeing service in the Berlin Airlift. It was the presidential aircraft for U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Always admire the design and longevity of American designs, unfortunately for the constellation it’s time came to early, and so ignominiously, to most people aircraft are just a means to go from A-B in the fastest most comfortable manner, much like cars, but to those of us who are geeks when it comes to aviation seeing aircraft on the scrap heap to soon without reaching its full lifespan and capabilities is sad, in much the same way as cars are almost revered, aircraft should be as well, thank goodness for aviation enthusiasts who have the money desire and drive to keep our airborne history alive, and to those who spend every spare hour restoring and flying these machines for nothing more than the satisfaction of doing something they love, again, thank you, because without them our aviation heritage would be lost forever.

Undoubtedly, this has got to be one of the most elegantly designed aircraft ever built.

In 1957, I flew from South Carolina via the Azores aboard a C-121, military version of the Constellation...a great plane...Kelly Johnson is from Ishpeming, Michigan where I lived as a kid...btw, Michigan State basketball coach, Tom Izzo, is also from the UP (Upper Peninsula)

Navigated KC-135s in SE Asia early in my career, but later met several officers senior to me (then on C/NKC/EC 135s) that had flown as crewmembers on the EC-121. We always called it the 'ugly stick'--don't know for sure, but I think it had to do with the shape of the fuselage. Wonderful aircraft (they were always proud of it), and wonderful video. Thanks

It has to be said that that truly was a gorgeous aircraft.... I don't know what it was about that era... with emphasis on streamlining and art deco.....that it is as beautiful to look at as the cars from that era....

My heart leaped with joy when I saw the AIR INDIA 'Connie' at 0:51! You see, my dad had been a ground engineer with the airline based at Santa Cruz Airport in Bombay. My parents, sister and I have flown in the 'Connie' and the Super 'Connie' on very many occasions. The 'Connie' and her sister were indeed elegant ladies of the sky.......

Howard Hughes designed this aircraft and owned TWA, I hope he got mention? He flew it to just himself and a girlfriend, also bought out all of the seats on a flight back from JFK/LAX as he had the manifest and when she boarded it was only her and Howard the Pilot. He also was instrumental in the wide-body jet L-1011 and TWA bought them.

Were the Wright R-3350 originally projected for the Constellation or right from the start for the B-29 Superfortress?

i remember going to the Avalon airshow in 2007 i had no interest in Propeller planes and then i saw her i thought it was the Concorde or 747 of Props and thats what it is the most beautiful elegant Propeller plane love at first sight its real the queen of the sky's in her day and passed her baton peacefully to the 707 and then the 747 as the queen but the A380 has declared war and trying to take it by force .

How about the A330? Perhaps the most beautiful plane of it's time. But indeed. The most classy planes are real old ones.

Great plane, awful diction. These Aussie documentaries are pretty good but the scripts are written by schoolboys. Anyway enjoy the show, people.
