There have been many birds in New Zealand that have been made extinct. Before the first significant numbers of humans arrived, there were no mammals at all, except for a small vegetarian rat. So birds didn't need to fly then.

They only rediscovered the female kakapo in the 60s, over on the South Island in Fjordland, we didn’t have a government ministry for conservation til the 80s (before just a government service called NZ Wildlife Service), and they don’t breed too often, so unsurprisingly it’s been a long time before we could get the ball rolling. Though these birds have a long life span, we had worried that there wasn’t any females left, so until the rediscovery we thought we had to wait and watch the kakapo slowly die out. Their numbers are increasing however, with plans to eventually reintroduce them to Fjordland in the South Island is their pest eradication efforts succeed.

the story of the kakapo is quite similar to the story of the dodo, both lived isolated on an island with no threats in the form of predators, then humans came, introduced new animals, and ravaged the population, the difference is that there is a chance that they can save the kakapo, and i really hope they succeed.

Satan Bitch i can't tell if you're joking or not, it's practically common knowledge that the dodo had no predator's on their islands, and once humans came, none of the dodo's knew that they were threats. And so the humans thought the birds were stupid do to them not running away from them. learn some earth history before making dumb comments.

Nikko Nikko Nii where they’re chilling now is thankfully pest free and safe for the kakapo. The main issue at the moment is just making sure they stay healthy and breed. They’ll re-introduce them to the South Island in Fjordland once they get the remote areas pest free. So as long as things do as they have been, the kakapo will get better. Also: We kiwis are a stubbornly protective bunch when it comes to our wildlife, so no way in hell are we letting them get extinct
