Adriane. I competed in shot and discus in HS and college. Coached it for 20 years. This is great for new throwers. I'm helping a young gal thrower who just started. I'm going to make sure she watches this. Easy, basic and really great introduction to a very technical event. Thank you. I hope you are coaching young people in the weight events.

Hello, your drills seem strait forward and simply to follow. Of course, I know that one will need much practice to perfect their technique. My twins girls threw a bit in Jr. high, but we did not have a coach. They are freshman now and are planning on throwing discus and the shot. We are going to a clinic this coming weekend. Do you have any other training videos that we can watch?

A LOT of good tips for me to practice. But, I have one question (problem). After my FIRST SPIN to the center of the circle, my momentum starts fading. Do you rely on momentum to keep you moving OR, as I've seen in some Didier Poppe technique drill videos, do you do a hip spin (turn) in mid-air as your right foot is coming down to the center of the ring?
@adrianewilson7964
@adrianewilson7964 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, Mystery47. The rhythm of the throw is dictated by the back of the ring. If you start your first turn too quickly, it is easy to dive into the middle and blow through the rotation. Some coaches cue "slow to fast" or "long to short" to set up the flow of the throw. The hip spin should occur mid-air but only if there is enough right leg/hip drive out of the back of the ring. Keep the left arm up on the sprint to the middle and keep the discus long 'behind the hip'. If you land with the right foot in the center with an aggressive rotation already in place, get your left foot down in the power position as efficiently as possible to work the double support (two feet) into the release. Hopefully you have generated enough power off the left foot out of the back and an aggressive right foot turn in a torqued position you must uncoil into the release.

I just learned my biggest flaw from some of those "Throwing Smarter Throwing Farther" videos featured in the right side column. I haven't been using my legs AT ALL. I used to land FLAT-FOOTED and threw within the restrictions that you have when flat-footed. Yesterday, I went out and practiced landing on the balls of my feet and pushing/turning while on the balls of my feet. From my HIPS TO MY TOES, I was in agony last night. I slept for 11 hours. BUT, I THREW OVER 10' FARTHER THAN I USUALLY DO. Once my muscles and balance get used to the new (proper) technique, I expect my SPEED to increase which will translate into even farther throws. YOU started me on the right path with your rhythmic style and for that I thank you. One point to make - when landing flat-footed you have to land with the disk pointing at the back of the circle. Otherwise, you can't twist your body enough to follow through on the throw. Basically, you're only throwing for a quarter turn to the release point. But, when you land on the balls of your feet, the discus can be another quarter turn or more behind you which gives you up to a half turn or three-quarter turn in the circle to put some speed on the disk. It only took me five or six YEARS to become enlightened. I'm a Senior citizen (74) who likes to compete in our State Senior Games. I've had to self-learn through KZfaq videos and books. My inspiration has been the videos of the GIRLS. They throw the same 1K discus that I throw but they can throw it around the 200' mark. I'm at HALF that distance. I figured since I was bigger and stronger that I should be able to "easily" duplicate their feats. I knew they were faster than me but I tried "muscling" the discus out there. It didn't work. When you use your muscles they become tight and actually restrict how far you can throw. I was TOP HEAVY. Some coaches call it being overactive top. So, I've got to learn to relax my top half and use the muscles and strength in my lower half to give me "separation twist" and speed on the top half. Thanks again.
