As horrifying as this looks, the reality is actually more benign. The eggs are set on the mom's back, and a layer of skin grows over them. So it's essentially like a large egg sack. After the little ones hatch and leave, the mom sheds the layer of skin, and the process begins again. So at worse, it might feel like some stretching, or a really bothersome itch.

I doubt it hurts. I'm pretty sure the skin that grows up around the eggs is super thin and flexible. It all sheds off once the birthing is done.
