3:01"..and obviously you don't want to have your breaker on..." Working on a switch in a flat of a 3 unit building built in 1910 I pulled the fuses(knob and tube) that are just looped circuits, nothing home run, and started to work on the switch box without checking with a voltage tester. After smoking my screw driver and not getting shocked, I traced out the run and found it run directly down to the main, and not through the fuse box in the flat. The romex connected to the cloth insulation should have been my clue that it might not have been wired from the flat and to test it for voltage. Now I know, and I appreciate that I didn't have to learn it by getting a smoky curly hairdo.

Thank you for this information. I had a drain pipe break just behind the wall of the dishwasher. During the repair, I was thinking of installing an electrical box up high so if there was a future problem the water wouldn't drain down the electrical wire (which was coming out the bottom of the wall),.and putting a cord on the dishwasher, but did't know the regulation on that. You answered that for me,,,, THANKS!!

We just recently bought a house, and it has probably a 20 year old or so maytag (just a guess), but we got a used 3 year old amana. The amana comes with a ground wire, and its already attached to the grounding screw, whereas the old dishwasher is using a connection wire that has the bare copper wire, same as this video. Other videos show the 2 ground wires being connected to each other, and not done through a grounding screw, but also the wires in those videos look to have newer wires with the copper threads rather than solid copper piece. I assume based on this answer "green wire is for the ground. It will attach to the bare copper wire that is part of your power supply wire coming to the dishwasher", I would just ignore the grounding screw, and just connect the two wires together?
@zaryk124 жыл бұрын
OR just wrap the copper around the ground screw, as I believe this is suggesting? "Both green wires need to be attached to the electrical box of the dishwasher. If there is a ground screw this is where you would do that." I believe dishwasher ground has a hoop end connecting it to the ground screw.

The dishwasher's conductors look like they're aluminum. So are there any special precautions you take to connect aluminum to copper, say a dab of Noalox ?
@HouseImprovements7 жыл бұрын
They should not be aluminum. They are usually a braided wire and may be soldered together from the factory at the ends

I sooooooooooooooooooooooo AGREE with you Why the heck do they force US to hard-wire a dishwasher Cos, they want to create JOBS... If you do not know how to connect a dishwasher you have to HIRE someone and that is 35.00 starting price.... Why not just have a plug, like I lamp or a radio Are outlets for dishwasher different in someway I dunno, more AMPS.......for sure its 110V not a 230V
@HouseImprovements7 жыл бұрын
I think the main reason is because the plug would not be easily accessible without removing the dishwasher. The hardwired dishwasher junction box is at the front of the access panel so it can be accessed.

Yes it is harder when you are laying on the floor. Sometimes the electrician leaves enough wire that you can lay the dishwasher on its back to do this hook up.

If you are not going to re install a dish washer again or for a while I would install a rectangular electrical box in that area and put the end of the wires in there . Clamp them in the box and use wire nuts to cover the ends of each wire.

My Boch dishwasher wires melted those two yellow screwy yellow tabby thingy ma-bogg things and the two met...and arked - melting the plastic of those yellow tabs. If I was to re-wire, ya think the dishwasher will work. or should I just not even try and go buy a new boch

well first off why did they melt? second off you limey fried the circuit board but you never know. The guys on or forum may have some better insight for you on these matters. www.house-improvements.com/forums/

I have no idea why it melted the plastic yellow, but all that remained was the metal on the inside of the yellow... I cleaned up the wires, cut them, reconnected it firmly, new plastic thingy ma-boggs. Turned the power to the dishwashwasher back on [ smart on my part ayee ] Pressed POWER on the DW....and........nothing................. So knwing it will cost a wack of cash, thinking anything electrical got fried when it arked... for sure the CB was fried..........maybe the motor too... so I do not want this in my house I am so lucky nothing caught fire... So I am going to purchase a new DW I am keeping the NON-Electrical parts and will sell what I can Foot panel Hoses Trays upper and lower Water filter The rest got trashed BOSCH MODEL # SHE44C06UC /47 These parts are up for sale

How do you hook the hard wire up to the circuit breaker in the fuse box? I just got a dishwasher and the first time I used it it looked like the heating coil oxodized. Called and a service tech came out and replaced the coil only to find out we have 240 amps (? I think that's what he said when he tested the control panel) going through so it actually melted the heating unit and blew the motor. We used a 20 amp fuse but he made it sound like only one of the wires of the three was actually supposed to be hooked up to the fuse. (Sorry it was rather confusing to me)

My dishwasher hooks up very similar. My dishwasher although has a "green" ground wire, which i'd connect with the house's bare ground wire against the ground screw. My problem is, recently the marrettes melted off/burnt. I was the "orange" colour. Maybe they were too small? I will likely rest rip the writes clean and use In-Sure connectors. Is this suggested? Could anything else has caused this? I was told that it was likely caused by a bad connection, weakly twisted (copper-copper) before i applied the marrettes.
@HouseImprovements8 жыл бұрын
+Slinkbomb should not melt unless there is a problem. Restrip all wires and redo. Make sure ground is hooked up as well and dishwasher is on the proper sized breaker.

Great video! Quick question though. My new Samsung dishwasher has a white, black and green wire. But the green wire is split...one end is a regular wire and the other has a loop at the end. The dishwasher came with a power cord to install which has a white, black, and green wire with a loop at the end. How would you connect those green wires? Would you basically stack the green wire from the dishwasher (both the regular end and loop end) with the green wire from the power cord and hold all three down with the ground screw?
@HouseImprovements4 жыл бұрын
Both green wires need to be attached to the electrical box of the dishwasher. If there is a ground screw this is where you would do that. Not sure why the one from the dishwasher has two loose ends but I would assume it comes from somewhere and if it does just attach the hoop end to the ground screw with the other hook coming from the cord.
