What is the Difference between Drum Brakes and Brake Disc ?
The primary difference between disc brakes and drum brakes is relatively simple. Disc brakes create friction with a disc-shaped rotor and a pair of brake pads, whereas drum brakes use a circular drum and brake shoes.
Of course, there’s a bit more to it than that. Each brake drum or disc brake assembly contains a unique collection of parts that work together to stop the vehicle.
What are Drum Brakes and How Do They Work?
Many vehicles have a drum brake assembly behind each of the rear wheels as we probably see these last years on some electric cars and not only. There are also some classic cars with drum brakes at all four corners.
Each of the circular drums fits over the top a set of brake shoes, associated hardware, and a wheel cylinder. One of the car’s wheel and tire assemblies is held against the brake drum with a set of lug nuts.
An individual drum brake operates as follows:
When the driver activates the brakes, fluid from the master cylinder acts on the wheel cylinder.
The wheel cylinder then pushes the brake shoes outward against the rotating drum, creating friction.
Because the drum is bolted to the wheel, the wheel and tire assembly starts to slow down.
The brake hardware holds the shoes in place and maintains the correct shoe-to-drum alignment during braking.
Although some vehicles still have drum brakes in the rear, the technology is being phased out because disc brakes are far superior.
But wait !! If the brake disks are far superior why VW Group still use drum brakes on the latest electric cars from ID family?
When it comes to electric cars the things are changing slightly. Since most motors are mounted at the back of electric cars and they use regenerating brake they provide enough direct braking power to the rear axle, lets don’t forget that over 80% of braking power use in a vehicle is produce on the front axel. I think Volkswagen likely figured that out and want to save some upfront cost and make maintenance intervals a bit longer. Another reason is decrease rolling resistance, as disc brake pads have the tendency to drag on the rotors a small amount as the car coasts. Drum brakes, just by nature of their design, do not. The brand also says that drum brakes offer superior performance and reactivity after long periods of disuse-those long inactive periods being due to the EV’s regenerative braking system handling most of the stopping.
Here we have to mention also that drum brakes will last longer then brake disk and they will need less maintenance than disk brakes at least in electric cars.
What Are Disc Brakes and How Do They Work?
All modern vehicles have at least disc brake assembly behind each of the front wheels. Most of the new cars those days use disc brakes at all four wheels.
Each disc brake consists of a caliper-with a set of brake pads inside-that mounts over a disc-shaped rotor. One of the car’s wheel and tire assemblies is held against the rotor with a set of lug nuts.
An individual disc brake operates as follows:
When the driver activates the brakes, fluid from the master cylinder acts on the brake caliper.
The caliper then squeezes the brake pads against the rotor, creating friction.
Disc brakes are far less complicated than drums, making them easier to replace. Also, disc brakes weigh less and outperform drums in a variety of ways. For example, disk brakes dissipate heat better and have a better performance at high speed or at repetitive brake and acceleration. Also, disk brakes perform better in water or bad raining condition where is able to squished water outside easier.
Conclusion
The conclusion is very simple, for normal daily driving you will be more then fine with drum brakes in the rear and disks in the front. From what we see now we expect in the future that more and more electric cars to use drums on the rear due to low resistance, low maintenance and lower costs for manufacturers. Of course, performance electric cars like Porsche Taycan, Audi e-Tron GT or Tesla will always use disk brakes because at high speed you will need also a greater braking power.
In the end of course brake disks are better but you really need them ?
So all I have to say guys is that manufacturers always test the cars and brakes before they take them out on sale. If they choose to use drums on the rear that mean the car don’t need more braking power on the rear and you should not worry to much.

I thought discs have better stopping power, are easier to fit when pads need replacing? How come not all electric cars have them, probably because VW thought they cost less.Be interesting to know what the difference is between disc and drum brakes to fit at factory?
