I immediately lost all interest in this game when I opened the Steam page and saw them selling "Eclipse Credits." Fuck that. Same microtransaction garbage you see in 2K's sports games. Only a month after release and it's already 33% off, so I'm guessing it's doing pretty poorly sales-wise, or 2K is desperate to get some more whales in. Even if I was a massive Marvel fan, I still wouldn't want to waste my time on something like this. I just saw news that Garth DeAngelis left Firaxis after 14 years a couple days ago, and I can only imagine why.

Its a glorified mobile game. You run around collecting skins and appearances, then do a card battle. Replace the AAA graphics and voice acting with random pixelart or anime-like. Then you have a 1000 games just like it

I think the issue is that it was clearly made by people brainlessly attempting to copy indie game trends. There was clearly some committee approving everything saying "deck builders are popular we need a deck of cards with an energy system" and "visual novels are popular we need a bunch of generic archetype characters so people will want to have sex with them after hours of needlessly extended cutscenes."

The way you described it reminds me of another game based on the same franchise. Avengers AKA the most average looter shooter imaginable. Ironically, it was developed by several good studios each with quite a pedigree, and yet the result was messy. It proves that the quality of the game depends on the management a lot more than people assume. I don't think that the developers are to blame for the cringe inducing writing since that would probably be closely curated by Disney. Wouldn't surprise me if they had to rewrite the story several times due to Disney demands.

I really wished Firaxis have stayed away from this silly project in the age of waning Marvel interest and shifted resources towards another XCOM game.

I would argue it is actually Disney Midas Touch. I know it goes against the economist/"modern" use of the phrase (but i mean, they are the scourge of the earth so fuck them), but midas touch wasnt a good thing in the story, Midas couldnt eat, or do practically anything for that matter, everything he touched with his hands losing its intrinsecal value to become just shinny cold gold. As gold is "just pretty" which is what disney stuff is. The monetary value is banal and changes wildy, and its utilities are generally modern (and im pretty sure most people wouldnt be able to name any factual utility not related to market trading without looking at google). I just finished it with all the dlcs. it was not the game I excpected but still ended up liking it. I did felt the game tedious at times but mainly for the deck building parts, guess card games are not for me. I see a lot of people not liking the abbey and "friendship simulator" thing, funnily enough those were the selling points for me. The writing could be better sure, but at least got my favorite character alright I think. Idk, I guess i got Midnight Suns "backwards". I still would've liked a new XCOM, and I guess Midnight Suns be more like Mass Effect or something. Hell, it actually made me want an actual dating sim too lmao.

I would have loved to be able to walk around the XCOM 1 and 2 bases, but not as the default option. That would be a feature I would use maybe a handful of times and never again. It irked me in all the ME games as well (In ME 1,2,3 after the 5th complete run, in ME:A after half the game.), but except for ME:A all the hub spaces were far smaller and more compact.

Like really why couldn't they have made it play like XCOM. I can think of a dozen ways they could have made it work.

If it's alright, I want to go over your video and respond to most of your points step by step. Now I'm going to make it clear that I'm in the middle of playing the game story for the first time and I'm really enjoying it so far. But I don't intend to being argumentative and won't judge you for having a different take. My response here will include bits that I both agree and disagree on. First is your unfortunate issue of dealing with a launcher and long loading screens. I don't really have anything valid to say about this since I'm unable to relate to the problem. I'm playing the game on PS5 and I didn't have to deal with any of those issues. That's not to dispute your complaint at all as if I were playing on PC, then I would have the same problem. Point is my experience was different from yours within the technical side of things. Now regarding your point Strange's Sanctum protection spell didn't do anything against Lilith. That's not entirely accurate. I rewatched the cutscene for context and I'm pretty sure Wanda was in the middle of making the spell, but Lilith interrupted before the spell was finished. After the heroes' first encounter with Lilith, the spell was finished since she's not close to the Sanctum. The reason why Lilith was able to break through the second time was because she has Venom and his symbiote powers combined with dark magic. Next is the Venom boss and how it plays out. So even though we as the player beat him in combat, I think that's moreso for spectacle within the mission and not how the fight is actually presented in reality. I mean the gameplay has the characters stand around and wait for turns, but they fight in action combat during cutscenes. So if we're going strictly by cutscene logic, the heroes were losing. There's usually a difference between gameplay and cutscenes in terms of physics/believability that I'm sure applies to a lot of video games. An example is that Joel Miller probably would've died in The Last of Us Part 1 if the player wasn't controlling him. Back on topic, I wouldn't say the heroes did nothing to save Wanda. There's moment right before Venom appears where Strange attempts to use his magic to get rid of the symbiote tentacles, but fails due to pushback from the symbiote combined with dark magic. Not to mention after the boss, Lilith has already taken over the Sanctum and any attempt to rescue Wanda would end up being a suicide mission. So the heroes needed to make a tactical retreat, which isn't the same as abandoning Wanda. Then we get to your point on Blade. I'll be honest, he's been pretty hit or miss for me in the game. I absolutely agree on his dumb relationship with Captain Marvel, I don't understand the idea behind that. However, I wouldn't say he's now reduced to a complete quippy character who doesn't take things seriously. Sure he seems to make jokes every now and then, but he doesn't really do it during serious moments from what I've seen and is still cool during missions. I would say it's during Abby sections is when he dips. So regarding Nico and Magik, I can understand how one can see them as annoying and immature. It's difficult for me to say whether I agree with that or not since I need to do New Game+ in order to gain full context. But I'm now starting to see the criticism of them being hypocritical over Wanda. As for Caretaker not letting you use the library, I'm pretty sure that's her letting emotions cloud her judgement and sees Wanda as a destructive force because she accidentally killed Agatha, who's the ghost in the game. Not saying that validates her actions or anything, just bringing up her reasons. I'll will say regarding the Midnight Suns as characters (excluding the Avengers, Spider-Man and the other heroes since they're separate teams), I think Ghost Rider and Morbius are the best written out of the bunch. (Okay, Morbius is technically a dlc character. But he was a Midnight Sun in the comics, so I'm including him anyway.) I do admit that the "Midnight Suns' faction of the roster are kinda weak as characters, which is a problem since the game is named after them. I found myself enjoying having conversations with the Avengers, Spider-Man and Deadpool, which is pretty strange and disappointing even thought I'm having fun with the game. As for cosmetics and currency, yeah I agree with how stupid that is. Now I got the ultimate edition and got early access to a large handful of costumes without in game money, but that doesn't disprove your point. That's pretty much all I have to say and can't really go into much more of the story considering you stopped playing. Sorry if I overtyped, but I hope I got the point across. There's stuff I both agree and disagree on regarding your video. I've been enjoying the game so far, but I'm only a little over a quarter way into the story. So maybe my perspective will change as I go along.

And while I did finish the game (I think the bugs were gone by the time I got to it), I did have this nagging sense of boredom that would always creep up out of combat and I can say that doesn't really change even all the way to the end. I will give it another playthrough with the DLC characters being out, but I think I'm going to skip the cutscenes for the most part. I know a friend who said it did in fact dramatically increase the entertainment value of it, lol.

If nothing else, this game is perfect for playing out a huge asshole and not even feel bad about it

About the audio/video desync and lag issue... While i never played this game I had the exact same problem with Ghostwire: Tokyo. In that instance, the problem was some sort of DX12 compatibility issue with the graphics card. Forcing the game to run with DX11 (via command line when launching the .exe) fixed it. Also increased the FPS, to boot. Not saying it'd do the same here, but thought I'd mention it.

I skipped watching this video for a long time for a few reasons. Mainly because I already knew most of everything that was in this video. I saw it in my recommendations today and decided to click on it, and the horror stories are even worse than I had imagined. THERE ARE MICROTRANSACTIONS IN A $60 GAME! SERIOUSLY WTF! The combat in this game is very overshadowed by the other 60% of the “gameplay” and it looks alright. It reminds me a lot of a game called Fights in Tight Spaces. The combat is almost the exact same. But what does Fights in Tight Spaces have that this game doesn’t? A better question would be: what does it NOT have. No loading screens, no cutscenes, no Abbey, no other characters, no atrocious story, it’s 95% combat. The rest is deck building. It’s also half the price and one of the most user friendly games I’ve ever played. It’s everything about Midnight Suns that is good and nothing that is bad. If you’re interested in this type of combat, I recommend it. I know half of this comment is about this other game, that’s because Midnight Suns isn’t worth talking about.

Treating franchises as just formulaic cash cows, and employing creative who don't care for them to head projects involving these franchises, is the way to failure. These bean counter run corporations need to understand that you can't blitzscale creative content. You can't ignore your customer, and you can't give these projects to creatives that don't understand how these franchises work, or aren't that creative. Media isn't toothpaste. You can't just churn it out, or brand expand ad infinitum. Familiarity breeds contempt, especially with crap storytelling.

So TLDR: Midnight Suns - a grand campaign - is worse than Chimera Squad - an XCOM spin-off intentionally lesser than War of the Chosen because it wasn't supposed to be a grand campaign. Midnight Suns should have been in the style of War of the Chosen, an up-scaled Chimera Squad, or classic JRPGs instead of...whatever this abomination is. Gameplay: XCOM Enemy Within - You're in command of soldiers from around the world and have funding from all the major governments. Build up your base, establish outposts around the globe, train your troops to perfection, reverse engineer alien technology, and ascend your units beyond humanity's limits through genetic manipulation, cybernetic augmentation, and psychic awakening. Take up to 6 soldiers into a semi-realistic battlefield, utilize cover and soldier abilities, and fight turn-based battles against unique alien monsters and even misguided humans. XCOM 2 War of the Chosen - You've been rescued from alien captivity and get to redeem yourself. Kit out your mobile base, train soldiers in new and revamped classes with new and revamped skills, get proper robots from a long-gone friend, get specialized units from your allies, unlock more psychic potential (what could possibly go wrong there?), research and create tons of new and useful gadgets, and engage even more monstrous aliens than before in the same turn-based battles you know and love; now with environmental effects! XCOM Chimera Squad - You're a different guy now, this time in charge of alien police. Using hand-me-downs from XCOM and unique pre-trained officers, you have to manage your resources, think about who you send out on undercover work, and strike at criminals in turn-based combat that's more like D&D than traditional XCOM. At least you can now choose where a unit deploys to, and have many new skills specifically based around squad tactics! Midnight Suns - Use your favorite Marvel heroes in epic battle! ...against the same two enemies every fight. And you don't even get full control over each unit like in XCOM. You get three actions for your whole turn, period. And what you can do is chosen at random from a deck of cards... And you don't even get semi-realistic battlefields with cover spots and environmental effects. You instead get a crappy little rectangular arena with boxes and barrels to throw at enemies like some cheap WWE match. Story: XCOM Enemy Within - Aliens are invading! Keep the planet calm and stop the invasion! Also there's some doofus goons that are worshiping the aliens or something. XCOM 2 War of the Chosen - We may have lost the first war, but we're sure as hell not losing the second! Build a resistance, ally with other resistance factions, honor a lost friend's memory, show Valen that she picked the wrong side, and kick the alien scum off our planet! XCOM Chimera Squad - Well, aliens are stuck here now. Might as well put 'em to work. Use your alien SWAT team to police three powerful underworld elements, sus out a fourth faction manipulating all three for a nefarious purpose, and make XCOM proud of the world they made. Midnight Suns - Demonic Invasion! The Avengers, X-Men, and more must unite to stop the forces of evil! ...by talking to each other on social media...and going on friendship dates with some random magic person they dragged out of a coffin...

Well to be honest I actually really liked this game. I liked the story and the gameplay . I am a major marvel film and it was just a blast for me to play alongside my favourite Heroes as the hunter . I liked building friendships and Connections and the combat was great too In my opinion.

I don't disagree on any points. Excellent review of a terrible game. Glad I didn't purchase. However....... I do want to say that Marvel lore-wise, Scarlet Witch dunks on the Midnight Suns SOOO hard, the story writers should NEVER have allowed that fight to happen. It makes perfect sense that they would need granny to bail them out, because power level-wise, that's like goku going super saiyan 20 vs a kindergarten classroom.

I remember seeing this game advertised and was immediately unsure. Xcom was a good game but the story was never the strong suite - and I'd already been burned by a myriad of pre-order back in 2015. So I waited for the reviews. And to be honest when the game launched on Steam it was just... silence. No one was really talking about it. Maybe one review was 'story sucks - gameplay is alright but not as good as XCOM', and that was it. So I decided I'd wait for more reviews. 19:23 I dunno about you but I feel like this is a side-effect of the success of _No Man's Sky_-style post-launch development. Don't get me wrong, a game deserves to be the best version of itself possible, but the rough beginnings of games like the aforementioned _No Man's Sky_ and others like _Fallout 76_ and _Darktide_ shouldn't play into giving people false hope and end up becoming an _Anthem_ , a _New_ _World_ or a _Cyberpunk_ _2077_ , it's just untenable. What happened with that game, and many others, is that it's eventual transformation into a success was a story about a dev making amends for a botched initial release, and that doing this sort of thing should not, and must not, become the industry standard.

Another thing I noticed with Midnight Suns (and Jedi Survivor, too) is this annoying trend of making your appearance and clothing a big deal. Like treasure boxes you find and open in the Abbey are pretty much pure cosmetics. Who cares? It has nothing to do with the game play. I guess if your thing is doing screen posing and posting (which this game fully supports), then you'll be in heaven. Otherwise it's just a waste of time.

Wait but this game is actually kinda fire IMO - a lot of complaints (numbers of card plays, number of types of card, etc...) are low in the early game, but pretty highly advanced in the late game. Is it XCOM 3? Absolutely not. Is it as good as XCOM 2 (without ANY mods), maybe? Is it as good as modded XCOM? No, pretty much nothing is. But the game is far from a dumpster fire and a lot of the performance issues have been fairly quickly resolved.

I really enjoyed the gameplay loop and "strategy layer" of midnight suns. What really drove me up the wall was the character writing. It's so hilariously, _horrifically_ bad, I can only imagine it was vetoed into existence by the Haus of Maus What blasts my ass about the real life cosmetics buying is that the fucking file is already on my fucking computer, the model is _right there in the viewer_, I'm just not allowed to actually use it It's infuriating, it's downloaded a file to my machine that it's then refusing to let me use As a further comment, Wanda wasn't forced to stay behind, in fact she _refused to come with_ and Strange just went along with that. "keeping the wards up" read as making up an excuse for her to not have to come with to me I also had no issues with the controls on M-KB, in fact i prefer them to controller, because line targeting is way too sensitive with a stick The story beats are so bad, even with context on the end of the story. Scratch that, if you have context on what everything meant, the story gets _worse_ because every action the characters take are even more irrational Final comment and edit: Niko Minoru is the second worst character I've ever seen in any piece of media, only barely beaten out by Ava from Borderlands 3

This game really suffers from the Gotham Knights thing where it looks like a live service microtansaction dumpster fire but they steered away at the last possible second. But now it doesn't have an audience. Just like how the story is the shining redeeming quality of Gotham knights, the gameplay seems like the only redeeming quality of this game. Also they didn't find a way to translate superhero comic book stuff without it coming across as cringy and ridiculous which is pretty important because the comic books are pretty ridiculous. It's not goofy and out there enough to be absurdist but not grounded enough to be not cringy. It's not satirical either or a commentary on something.

I mean... I like the game, personally. It has some major issues don't get me wrong; a lot of the home base's gameplay systems are completely nonsensical and do not mesh with the rest of the game (looking at chests and ingredient foraging here...), and I've had to put it down for now until new patches address crashes so bad my entire _computer_ resets, but the actual combat gameplay is excellent, and there are some truly standout characters in the cast. Looking at Blade, Magik and Nico in particular, who steal the show over the prickvengers. Spider man is also great, but when is he ever not.

I was so excited for this game when it was first announced. Then I found out the combat was card based and that killed all interest I had in it. I despise cards games, I despise deck building, I hate knowing I have an ability but it's at the bottom of my deck so fuck me I lose. But I love the old mystic Marvel Midnight Suns and again really wanted to like this game. Now that it's launched and the story and characters are crap I'm glad I lost all interest in it. But it's a shame because this game could have been so much more, could have been special.

I can't say I hated this game, because it was so cringe that I found myself laughing at how bad the writing is. The combat system was actually interesting too, but the inbred child of baby's first Skyrim and dating sims which is running around the base just killed the game for me. This and microtransactions. Which is sad, because I'm, like, the target audience: I like Marvel, turn based combat and squad tactics games

1. The performance issues must have been a PC Issue. 2. Yeah I wasn’t a huge fan of the friendship simulator either, they definitely could have done without those dumb clubs. 3. It’s a shame you didn’t make it to the end. The endgame combat is actually thoroughly satisfying. It may have redeemed a lot of the mediocre beginning for you. My only combat complaint would be diversity of enemy types. Definitely needs some ramped content to add replay ability though. I don’t think this game is as bad as you’re painting it to be. Tony Stark is played as a bufoon in Midnight Suns. All his plans backfire and is just played as an annoying, smug jerk. But luckily the Midnight Suns, who spend most of the game complaining that they should be in charge because they're so great and the Avengers (the Earth's MIGHTIEST Heroes) are just lame and full of fail. Typical Zoomer chauvinist exceptionalism based on no tangible evidence of their superiority.

Ah, Disney and its mediocre "safeness" for the sake of money strikes again. If i bought the game, id agree with drifter. But ill never buy the game so ill never truly know. But also, the combat imo looks pretty mediocre; even XCOM chimera had stuff like high ground and variable terrain to play off of. But it seems like this game is just a flat surface with some stock standard parcels and barrels stuck on the map that for the most part is just a fully traversible square. No impassable barricades, no features in the maps that would make them actually interesting. The graphics also look horrendous even in the cutscenes, even the chosen had more personality than these cardboard cutouts. The number of resources you need to manage without an easily accessible table to see all of those resources is egregiously poor game design. And also, in discussion of the "boss fights", they should have just made it really really difficult to beat them, such that the cutscenes make sense. But it's Disney where plot is contrived, difficulties aren't difficult, hardships aren't hard, and all you need is a gender-neutral, race-less knight in shining plot armor. And gender and race are real issues to be dealt with with real adult gloves, not a crutch for bad games, movies, and shows dealt with with Mickey Mouse hands. Yeah I can't imagine playing a game with such awful characters, even if the gameplay was good.

I feel like a lot of your complaints, at least regarding the story, dream sequences, friendship etc all boil down to "These are bad because someone else did them first." I wasn't the biggest fan of the friendship mechanics, but I appreciated that they had tangible gameplay benefits, unlocking and modifying the hero combos and also unlocking the midnight sun card for each character. The quiet moments of conversation were decidely bioware-esque though admittedly much shallower, but they taught me a bit about the characters who I knew nothing about. There was also some nice moments where Captain America and the Hunter bonded over the fact they were both fish out of water regarding the modern age that were actually pretty great. My biggest complaint is that the hulk was unlocked so late, and doesn't feel like a fully fleshed out character. Also the new game plus is one of the worst I've seen in awhile.

The midnight suns was originally the midnight sons and primarily had characters that had a mystical/supernatural theme to them. Characters like iron man and captain marvel look out of place in this game.

sorry to break it to you, but why would they start shipping working products on launch if they see there are no consequences of doing it this way?
