The message isn't that 'we don't need a gift', but that we need to enjoy it and put it to good use instead of becoming unhealthily oppressed by it. Luisa can be strong and help out, but she shouldn't be everybody else's problem solver; Isa can be more messy instead of a 100% perfect-looking princess. Casita is a metaphor for the family: the moment the foundation was rebuilt, the magic was back.

Yeah why Louisa needed to carry the donkeys back never made sense. Couldn't Mirabel or LITERALLY ANYONE have just grabbed some halters and carrots and lead them back.

Luisa's gift was so useful that the town came to rely on it as a solution to everything, even things that they didn't really need, which deprived Luisa of any time for herself. She never learned how to say no, because she was raised not to. She absolutely did not need to be the one gathering donkeys, especially since they were trying to find ways to put Antonio's new gift to use. However, the guy with the leaning house was the perfect person for Luisa to help. Only took her a second and it definitely needed to be done. I have a feeling moving the church was unnecessary though. They just felt like moving it because they could.

But the message IS that we don't need a gift as well.... The movie doesn't need to only show 1 message only and any others are null lmao

It is not instantly visible, but Isabela looks exactly like young Abuela Alma, and Mariano is very similar to Pedro. Alma saw Isabela as a chance to give her own story a good ending, paying no heed that Isabela wanted something else and there could be other options (much like parents who want their kids to become doctors/teachers/lawyers/anyone just because "it's a family tradition")

I'm so glad you noticed the message in Louisa's song... so many people get distracted by the music and visuals and completely miss it Also, "Aren't you supposed to cry at the end, not the beginning?" - clearly you need to see "Up"

The magic was breaking because the family was drifting apart. Notice how when the cracks was happening there was tension between the family members. Isabella and Maribel always their problems, abuela and Maribel was starting. At the proposal too then when Isabella and Maribel started to get closer they was fading and the argument with Maribel and abuela was the tipping point. Then at the end the family became a whole again. It was like the house knew this would happen and chose Maribel because it knew she could be the one to bring the family together and keep the magic alive.

An interesting thing about Julieta's healing powers: they repair damage, they don't undo congenital conditions. That's why Mirabel still has eyesight problems and her dad still has extreme allergies. I think it's a really great take on healing magic because it respects disabled people's existence as people with disabilities rather than treating them as problems to be undone.

Great reaction! I love this movie so much. One fan theory that I like for it is that the reason Mirabel didn’t get a gift is because she is the next candle-bearer or leader of the casita. Abuela didn’t have a gift; she was just given the magical candle. Also, just like her grandmother, Mirabel is the only person to really communicate with Casita at all and think of it as a friend rather than just a building.

I read on Internet, Dolores' room is soundproof (maybe not for little sounds). In fact, there's signs showing Isabela isn't interested by Mariano : in the first song, when Mirabel tries to escape to the kids, she talks to him about marrying her sister but we can see Isabela walking behind them without looking at him, and her smile when Mariano open the box with the ring in front of her.

the reason they got the magic restored was because Mirabel was always destined to be the keeper of the magic and the next head of the family. The casita now exists magically powered by the family themselves, rather than as a candle to be protected by one individual. Abuela was unable to see that Mirabel didn't get a traditional gift, or a room, because she was in the right place, the nursery- as her role and gift is to be the next leader of the family. you can see the candle flicker towards Mirabel during her ceremony, but abuela only sees the sputter. Abuela's insecurities and trauma meant she was unable to see this and just ostracized Mirabel thinking she was a sign that abuela was losing the family, and community's, miracle. This film is so wonderful on repeat viewing and really transcends other Disney films by having the antagonist be an expectation bought about by intergenerational trauma rather than a boogey man. I cried rewatching this video lol los origuitas is so good

The message of the movie was less "we don't need our gifts" and more "we are not JUST our gifts, but they are part of us". There where multiple family members who where happy with their gifts. Antonia for example just got his and adores it, and Isabella JUST learnedet that it was HER gift and that she could decide for herselfe how to use it. Taking the gifts away forever would have basically punished Antonio, and taken Isabellas bigest development factor away from her. It would be like taking an artists ability to draw away from them, just becouse drawing all day messes up their sleep schedual. In a sense, this movie was kind of majure in not taking the "easy way out", aka taking everyones gifts away like every watcher expected.

in the end they no longer need their gifts but they do deserve them. Abuela spends their whole lives making them work to be perfect and 'earn' the miracle when she was actually breaking it. in the end she finally does earn it.

The message is absolutely that you don't need to have a gift to be special, that's why Mirabel doesn't have a gift, other than being a super great person and helping all the other family members in a very real an unmagical way. I still feel the most for Abuela though. Going through war and loss like that is a hell that we can't even imagine. Though I get an idea from my grandmother who was in WW2. Bruno being stuck in the walls for 10 years is also really, really rough. EDIT: I have no relatives that have lived 10 years in the walls to confirm that though.

Fun Fact: During "Family Madrigal" when Mirabel tells the dude he can marry her sister if he wants to, Isa is walking right behind them and you don't get to see her facial reaction. He didn't seem to have the idea until after that song. Like he sighed over her but a *marriage* didn't become a plot point until the next day. While it's not *really* Mirabel's *fault* that Isa was in her marriage situation, I bet you Isa heard the suggestion, and probably rather then be mad at Abuela, whom she put so much stock in the opinion of, likely misplaced her anger onto Mirabel as the "cause" of making her have to marry a guy she doesn't want to. And then in the dinner scene, with Mirabel constantly using the engagment and pushing the engagment to distract from the cracks, Mirabel was again at the center of really pushing hard at the thing Isa wanted no part of. Like it's not *fair* for her to be so mad about it at Mirabel, but like, it makes a lot of sense that her hostility grew at least a bit when she didn't feel able to voice her frustrations and the family made Mirabel the scapegoat anyway. Also! Bruno only ever seemed to see things the reciever of the vision felt was a "bad outcome." (Even Mirabel having to hug her sister, which seems good, but Mirabel hates it.) Everyone else had obviously "bad" things. But when you relisten to it from the perspective that Isa thinks her vision is a BAD thing, like... "He told me that the life of my dreams would be promised, and someday be mine He told me that my power would grow, like the grapes that thrive on the vine" Either Bruno a) told her all about the "perfect" life she has growing more and more pretty little flowers, which is internally devistating to her because she HATES it. Or B) Bruno told her that "the life of her dreams" - that messy inperfect life - would be hers, and her power would be used on so many things more then just flowers - which is going to be terrifying to her, because Abuela would be so disapproving and upset. I just really love the subtle little details in this movie.

The reason Disney's musicals are so good is that they hire many of the best Theater writers. Can't get better than Lin Manuel Miranda in telling a story through songs. Alien Mankin and Stephen Schwartz are also top notch. Early Disney employed Richard Rodgers and Larry Hart.

I think the message was more, your More then your gifts, you can still have them. Just don't get overly dependent on them or cocky with them because they can be gone in an instant, and that gift or no gift family should band together to pull each other threw hard times. And when you give and give your whole life without expecting anything in return, all those you gave to can and likely will remember what you did for them for the rest of there lives. And in your time of need if there hear your now the one in need you might just be amazed at what could happen

Women rode sidesaddle because they were wearing long skirts.. Several layers of them. Also, they could not show their legs because of the modesty rules of the time, nor wear trousers. Riding normally and hiking up several layers of fabric and ending up showing their legs just wasn't an option. (Of course we're talking of the higher ranks of society, who were the only ones who could afford to ride horses as a hobby)

As you have seen Moana before this one you will better understand what they said about this movie and my theory of the candle and the house. The makers of this movie said it plays in the same world as Moana, so here is my theory on the candle. When Alma saw her husband murdered in front of her by the 1000 day war rebellion she let out a psychic scream of loss and probably gained the attention of Te-fiti or another of the Moana gods and they decided to help by changing the candle and building the casita. As Alma slowly started abusing the magic given Mirabel's ceremony was either a warning, or a message that if this continued another would be given lead. The cracks are the animosity between family members and especially the two leaders Alma and Mirabel. That Luisa was the first to lose her gift is logical as she is 19, so she had to endure 14 years of constant work with no rest. I mean these idiots asked her things like rerouting the bloody river. That amount of pressure is enough to break anyone. And yet she is the only one other then her parents to care about Mirabel as she warns her sister and pulls her out of harms way.
