In the original Kevin actually had a reason to hate his family. They were all mean to him and pushed him around to the point if you were in Kevin’s shoes you would probably wish them away too. In this film the kid barely has a reason to want to be Home Alone other then being an obnoxious brat. He doesn’t go through a character arc of growing up and he barely even seems to miss his family when they are gone.

Something I never noticed as a kid about the original home alone is when Kevin wakes up and goes around the house, the shots are specifically designed to show all the tools he uses for traps later (in addition to showing Kevin’s bewilderment). @kimberleaturner90632 жыл бұрын
Rewatched the original recently and I had forgotten how far into the movie the actual break in happened, and takes up a pretty short part of the movie. Kevin went through so much character growth before that even happened, as he figured out how to take care of himself and miss his family. Some many funny moments (even as small as the shopping bags breaking), and sweet personal growth moments (the conversation with the old neighbour in the church) happen before the break in, so we already really like the kid when it happens. And best part is that it feels like genuine growth, because he comes to the realisation himself that he doesn't feel right, no one makes him become better, though the old guy helps him make sense of it. By the time the thieves break in he's gone from a kid who lashes out in frustration and can't pack his own suitcase to a kid that can take care of himself. He becomes a good kid trying to defend himself and his home. Sequels that focus on the break in and push that as slapstick comedy miss all of that character growth of the kid and the family that makes it such a great movie.

One more thing about this movie I noticed while watching this review: the traps. In the original Home Alone movies, the traps were actual _traps._ All of Harry and Marv's slapstick injuries came about due to their own carelessness and stupidity, with the most interaction from Kevin basically being "push a button." Meanwhile, a lot of Max's traps just consist of him _directly attacking_ the "villains." Not only is this lazier, but it just adds on to the cruelty of the premise.

For years lots of movies just pretended that the internet and cellphones didn't even exist (90s to 00s iirc), and even though people would joke about it, they were still able to suspend their disbelief during the movies. Realism isn't always paramount in film. I do think writers shouldn't use the same device every time but only because it becomes cliche.

If I took a crack at a Home Alone in-cannon reboot, I think I'd make it so that Kevin is with his nephew and niece, indirectly, while their home is being broken into. You could set it up in a subversion where Butch is now a rich doctor with a beautiful French wife, and they have two children. Kevin is tasked with watching the kids while they are away for the holidays. Kevin could be away while the house is broken into so that he can't reenter, but video chat the kids and help them setup a defense around the house, telling them he's been in this situation before. At some point he could go radio silent, creating a couple new elements of conflict, and giving the kids a chance to stand alone as characters. Having two kids changes the Home Alone dynamic, where the stakes are reduced, but the family element can be explored like it hasn't been so far in the franchise. Coupled with their relationship with Kevin and his different relationship with Butch, you could explore similar concepts to the first movie while keeping them new, and focused around a teamwork aspect. I think you could do the same with the villains, casting an ensemble similar to Die Hard, where they are more competent and played straight, using reconnaissance and modern technology. Making them into a real threat. I think this would really create a great breakaway from the slapstick making it all the more ridiculous when it happens.

I feel as though not just the fact they thought rebooted home alone, but they made the main character a rich british kid tormenting two middle class parents just trying to provide for their kids. This feels really on the mark for current events oddly enough lol

While Home Alone 2 is indeed a do-over of the first film but in the city, I still loved it and I feel it deserves more credit as a really good follow up. Better than anything we got after it. @thefanwithoutaface81052 жыл бұрын
Honestly calling Home Alone 2 a do-over isn't accurate either. It puts Kevin in a completely different location with almost none of the resources he had in the first film. In Home Alone he had a house, food, a warm bed, and a place to defend himself. In Home Alone 2, he had none of that, a small amount of money, and the only house he could use legally was hollowed out. It certainly felt similar, but different enough.

if they wanted to repeat the the first and second movie over and over i would watch them because the cast is so great. add a new character like they did with tim curry and they would be way better then what we got. this video also made me want to see a modern one with the original cast.
@mullaoslo2 жыл бұрын
The first movie worked because of the producer/writer, director, the cast and the john williams soundtrack.. the reason HA2 works even with flaws is because it maintained all of those and the addition's to cast etc where good. From 3 it seems they thought the elements of the formula you needed was a kid left alone, stupid criminals and pratfalls... For a legacy sequel to work we would need chris columbus, the majority of the cast returning and john williams on the soundtrack.

It's no secret that the original Home Alone has flaws, but damn it has some tight writing. Here's a list: - Why doesn't Kevin call the police? Because he is initially delighted that his family has left due to a previous argument and he doesn't later because he thinks he's a fugitive. - How is Kevin left behind without anyone noticing? Because the family slept in due to a power outage and there are way too many family members to account for. Sure, the Murphy kid was a bit of a contrivance, but it's not unplausible. It also doesn't help that Kevin's passport was thrown away the previous night by accident. That itself leads to the point about the airport as security was much lesser back in those days due to it being pre-9/11. - Why doesn't Kevin call his family in Paris? Because personal cell phones weren't a thing and he probably didn't know his uncle's number due to the distance between both houses (they are in France after all and it is 1990). He is once again still elated over not having his family. I will admit though that it is a bit of a contrivance that the family doesn't call the house themselves. - Why doesn't Kevin go to a family or friend's house? Because they're all gone for the holidays and once again, still elated about the family being gone. Harry and Marv surviving all those traps are a bit pushing it in terms of believability, but it's safe to say that suspension of disbelief can stretch a little far in that area. This is why the movie is both timeless but could only be made and take place in the year it was made as with all the technological and security advances that have been made in the 33 years since the first film, there is no way in heck a kid is getting left home alone during the holidays. Kevin also has a reason to be mad at his family. They constantly look down on him and blame him for things that go wrong even if it isn't his fault. If my big brother screwed me over like that as well as the rest of my family all in one night, I would get pissed too. Why should people like Max? Why should people see the couple as the evil bad guys? This would be like if Harry and Marv were looking out for an orphanage of kids as the sole caretakers and the only way to support them was by burglary and Kevin was just mad at his family because why not. Also, Kevin actually talks and acts like an 8-year-old kid. Max just acts like any adult comedian writing for a kid. Disney took a beloved holiday classic and turned it into another terrible Disney Channel Sitcom movie and I'm not talking about the good ones.

I watched my original copy of the Home Alone VHS so much that I had to request a new one for Christmas when I was about four or five years old. There's actually a picture of me probably smiling and holding up my copy of the Home Alone VHS. Anyway.. fast forward to December of 1997.. I I'm now 8 years old. Being the Home Alone fanatic that I was.. I begged and begged my grammy ( grandmother on my dad's side.) To take me to theaters like the day that it came out. She did try to explain to me.. it's not going to be the same.. it's not what you think.. are you sure you really want to go? Of course I told her yes. As we left the theater.. I remember asking her how can that be a sequel? It's nothing like the others and none of the original characters are the same! There's no Kevin there's not even Harry and Marv. Her response was something like well the original characters are too old now. From that moment on I promised myself I would never watch another Home Alone sequel. However.. my nanny did continue to watch them. Of course though.. she agreed that they were just not the same. When I found out Disney plus was releasing a reboot to the Home Alone series.. like you I said something like you know that could go well if they do it right. Honestly.. I didn't think it was going to get on my nerves.. because it was a supposed reboot.. so I wasn't expecting it to stand anywhere even close to the others. You just can't. There will never be anything like the original home alone and Home Alone 2. Made it about 15 minutes into the movie.. and then immediately turned it off. They just didn't even try to do something good! Not sure what they were going for with that.. but it doesn't even deserve to be called a reboot. Pretty sure if any of the original cast members watched it.. they were shaking their heads like what the hell?! Dear Universe.. please make sure that young kids today don't grow up thinking that the Disney plus reboot was what Home Alone is about and what it stood for. Make sure they know about the original McAlister's and the original Harry and Marv!

Somehow, “Tropic Thunder” is aging better than it had any right to, the more I think about the past decade of reboots and remakes.

@@jasonvoorheescampblood I think because of how nauseatingly woke Hollywood (and the U.S.) have become, Tropic Thunder, while a mediocre shock value type of comedy at the time, now represents a bygone era where people weren't so brittle and offended all the time.

I literally watched Jojo Rabbit for the first time yesterday, having never even heard of it before. I actually enjoyed it, despite the very bizarre premise. I mean, a movie about a child having Adolf Hitler as his imaginary friend? Strange but enjoyable.

@@davekennedy6315 It felt more like a film about a kid discovering their mom has a jew they saved during the end of the second WWII with comedy added second. It got way too serious at times despite the premise.

@@ccateni28 it kinda had to get serious otherwise it would have been in poor taste I suppose. I liked his relationship with the poor Jewish girl living in the wall. Damn, maybe I'm getting a bit too sensitive in my old age haha!

In the first 2 home alone they got also emotional moments with old man and pigeon lady. Neither this or those 2 previous remekes had that , and moments are why home alone are special,also in the original they got real actors this movie has some comedians whom i never heard of.
@thelastdadonearth2 жыл бұрын
There was no point in making the "bad guys" sympathetic. There's no one to really root for because on one side you have two parents trying to get an item that they owned back from a kid they thought stole it and on the other side you have a kid who thinks the "bad guys" are trying to kidnap him and sell him. It actually makes the kid more sadistic because he's literally trying to kill them at that point. Also, the fact that they got Ellie Kemper as the "bad guy" only makes it worse. Ellie Kemper is the last person you want to have in an antagonistic role.
@QuestForTheS2 жыл бұрын
The writers were just trying to suspend disbelief and give them motive to incessantly try to enter the home, and accidentally made their motive too good. The Wet Bandits didn't need much motive beyond being greedy and irrational "bad guys".

@@QuestForTheS my guy you clearly didn’t watch the film because at some point the Wet Bandits’ motivation pivoted from just robbing the place to murdering Kevin.

It speaks volumes that the kid was more likeable playing a little Nazi then in this film. However obviously not his fault. Also while I'm thinking about It I just realized that he would've made a better Artemis Fowl than the kid that Disney actually casted! Especially with this characterisation.

Please share any movies you remember rocking the audience. I saw the original Home Alone in the movie theater. Towards the end, everyone there knew it was a special movie. I love comedy movies that are so good that the entire audience cheers all the way through and claps at the end. That also happened with, Ace Ventura 1 and 2, The Gods Must Be Crazy, Dumb and Dumber, Naked Gun, Weekend at Bernie's and off course The Room (not really a comedy). I know I am missing many movies. And I only mentioned comedy movies.
