Another Christmas, another Home Alone video. In the past, we've covered the Home Alone Sequels We Don't Talk About and done the TERRIBLE Home Alone Rip Off - Bone Alone. But this year, we have something entirely new - a Disney Plus Home Alone Reboot - Home Sweet Home Alone. With Archie Yates, modern quips and comedians crammed in. Will it hold up to the magic of the originals? Or is this the most shameless, bland, insultingly awful cash grab of any kind attempting to profit off of another Christmas? You'll never guess which one turns out to be true...

...My goodness. After seeing the past 6 Home Alone movies, I must say I have a pretty good understanding of what makes the originals so magical. And this reboot seriously fails at every single step. EVERYTHING about this movie is wrong. And I could probably rant about it for hours...

The problem is they aren't STEALING anything. They are getting something back that was theirs and what they believed was STOLEN from them. The villains aren't villains. Instead of it being bad guys who want to harm people or ruin people's homes these people are trying to save their own. That fundamentally messes up the whole plot dynamic. The kid is no longer someone I want to root for like Kevin. It's just ... they messed up everything about the plot that made the first movie great.

YES THIS. So it comes off as just some horrid rich kid tossing things he didn't pay for at a couple trying to get their own property back to save their house, rather than in the original, where it was obvious that even though the family was well off, Kevin was a bit younger and not really aware of the privilege he had because he was a literal kid young enough not to think about money or his own family's wealth, and that made us not care about it for him either. This kid is 12, lives in a gigantic home, and constantly talks about what his mother buys him. No- no all around. >_>

@@norancha2968 yeah sorry bud you're still wrong. Yeah, they're still breaking in to the home of people who they assume stole from them. This is likely the cheapest course of action. Just enter a code, search the house, get their doll, leave. This avoids getting cops and lawyers involved and losing more money through that route So I can actually massively understand why they broke in. Fuck that kid. And no, the idea isn't fresh and it actually does massively change from the original movie. You'd know that if you ended up paying attention. Clearly, you didn't.

It could have been their grandmother previously owned the house and had hidden in a secret place something valuable so course they have to sneak in and try get to this place. Ticking clock, the kid overhears this motivation and is himself searching so it’s a race against time. Still original and gives the chance to give some background to the people breaking in while not making them entirely sympathetic yet misguided.

@@rainalystre1877 With Harry and Marv they kinda end up falling for really obvious traps too, like just grabbing the front door handle instead of trying to pick it. Ignoring all the other issues with the movie, they should’ve explained the kid’s engineering skills better. Like, they could’ve had a joke where each year all he gets are those STEM kits parents push on their kids. He’s just got a pile of them he’s never touched and he’s like, “Why can’t I just get an action figure or some trading cards for once?” But then he later uses those kits to help make some of the traps. Maybe it might help avoid him coming across like a complete psycho.

i feel like a big issue with the movie is how the traps arent satisfying. In the original, the traps work, the traps are creative, and the thieves react in a comedic/cartoony way. I think part of the problem is the grown ups don't really come across as villains, they seem more like desperate people who've fallen on hard times. This undercuts any schaudenfreud sent their ways. The traps don't feel like karma. They feel like a tragic mistake. It'd be like in HA2 if Kevin decided that the appropriate reaction to being scared of the bird lady would be launching bottle rockets at her through most of the third act.

I don't know why I laughed at this....the example you gave. I guess because of how absurd it would've been if he had done something like that. I do agree with you here, though. This couple was meant to be sympathized (or empathized) with. I can't bring myself to watch this film, although a friend of mine wants to watch it just to riff on it. That's about the only way I could watch this, I think. Going in with 0 expectations.

This would have been a problem if it weren't a Home Alone movie. Because it's a Home Alone movie, you're looking forward to the violent third act. The whole time the couple was trying to scale that wall, I was cheering for them to succeed simply so I could watch them get brutalized by a series of vicious booby traps. The reason I was cheering for that is because I expected that when I decided to watch a Home Alone movie. Also, the couple were breaking and entering. They could have called the police to report the stolen doll, which would have quickly resolved the misunderstanding.

My biggest problem with this movie is how the entertainment is predicated on abusing these two innocent people - who are struggling to provide for their family - while focusing some unlikable little spoiled rich turd who looks like a young Peter Griffin, but acts like a British Eric Cartmen. Agreed; plus even I remember in the first two "real" Home Alones, even with the nail gun gag or arguably some of the more "violent" traps, it was filmed in a way that it was clear it was slapstick. As a kid, you never were worried that Larry or Marv were getting their head burned with fire, or a nail in their skin, because their reactions were comical and Joe Pesci literally was making noises like an old-school cartoon character instead of swearing. It worked because you know they weren't hurt hard enough despite it being incredibly painful to actually look like they needed to be taken to the hospital, lol.

From what I understand, too, the whole reason the "villains" are trying to get the doll back isn't just for solely monetary gain- the rare doll is supposed to keep them from LOSING THEIR FAMILY HOME. It just makes the whole "Sneaking back in to get what they think is their own property back" premise and the kid losing it on them because he thinks they're there to kidnap HIM for money so much more sleazy and a weird "rich kid throwing shit at people trying to save their home" dynamic. Let’s be honest here. Pam and Jeff are the protagonists of this movie. They’re just two parents who need money in order to keep their house just so that they and their kids could have a place to live. As a result of that, you feel more emotion for THEM instead of the main character, Max, you know, the kid who’s home alone, THE ONE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ROOTING FOR? Unlike other films, in which the burglars more or less deserved what they got (First film, Wet Bandits tried to rob Kevin’s house, second film, the Sticky Bandits try to steal charity money meant to got to kids who desperately need it in a hospital, third film, four terrorists try to steal a chip that controls a missile for a North Korean terrorist organization, fourth film, Marv and his wife try to get revenge on Kevin, fifth film, three art thieves try to break into a house to steal a valuable painting and try to kill anyone who gets in their way), where whenever the robbers fall for the traps, it’s funny, here… it’s not funny. Especially when Pam starts CRYING over the fact that their kids will be forced to live on the streets just because they can’t pay their debts. This film kind of reminds me of the SpongeBob episode, One Coarse Meal. In that episode, Mr. Krabs tries to terrorize Plankton into committing suicide so that Plankton will no longer try to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Ignoring all the other major things the episode does wrong, this episode basically is saying, “It doesn’t matter what Mr. Krabs is doing here, he’s the hero, Plankton’s the villain, so if Mr. Krabs wants to drive him to suicide, that’s OK because he's the hero!” The fact is this idea DOES NOT WORK if you feel sorrier for the supposed “antagonist” of the story rather than the “protagonist”. As for Max, the main character, he’s overall pretty bland and lacks the charm of Kevin, or Alex from the first three films. Heck, even though 4 and 5 are hated by a lot of people, at least THERE they made it clear that the kid is the protagonist, and the bandits are the villains. I guess they wanted to mix things up with this film to have it stand out from the previous films, like having the villains be good because it’s Christmas and the important thing is family and all that, but the premise is way too mean spirited, and having Pam and Jeff suffering through the traps, while they are ALREADY SUFFERING FROM LOSING THEIR HOUSE AND NOT HAVING MONEY TO FEED THEIR KIDS is overall just way too depressing for me to laugh at.

Sure you can have them get hurt, and there should be visible damage on the intruders, but it should never impede on them beyond the immediate scenes after it (even then). Also the fact that they made the intruders good guys completely ruins the joy of the home battle field. Like mentioned in the video you just feel bad for them since they have a just cause behind their want to get into the house so in the end it just feels like the kid is a psycho tormenting some people.
@laurena9563

This! The slapstick was so well done in the first two because even if they were objectively "violent" things happening, you knew it wouldn't result in Larry or Marv being stuck in a hospital for fifteen days afterwards- they just completely moved forward. It tells you something that even as a kid where you logically know someone's being stuck with a nail gun, that the slapstick is so well done you never think, "That's something he needs to go get checked out," lol.
@TechyBen
@TechyBen 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, one way to "save" that would be an end scene where the get the $200,000 and go "and you'd never believe the trouble we went through to get it... it was all a big mix up. But we forgive him for it all" etc. Play for laughs the "mix up". But they failed at it all.

okay so : Original Kevin - Afraid, knowing that the burglars wouldn't stop being criminals for a kid. No problems with maybe even killing a kid. This ''Kevin'' - The ''Burglars'' even want to TALK to him. But still, he throws this spoiled milk at them, hurting them and just ... being kind of mean. Also, there is like kind of a difference between a ten-year-old left home alone and a near teenager. When I think of my ten-year-old and how she actually is SO different from herself a year ago ... When it comes to being alone, having to do mature things, cooking and baking - Two Years make a way bigger difference. Like... I wouldn't leave my ten-year-old alone for more than a weekend and even then like ... I have to know, she is safe and I would constantly think about her safety. But a twelve-year-old? Well - Give her numbers when there is an accident, fill the fridge, prepare some meals and while I would still be a little bit afraid I would trust her to be safely alone for a weekend or even up to four days......

yeah~ i think it's once you humanize the "villains" that's when this movie goes downhill. sure: maybe they wanted to make this more Christmasy and make everything work out just fine, but this is a Home Alone movie. making the thieves too likable or even redeemable just doesn't work. doesn't help we don't want to see said people get brutally hurt. that's just cruel. yeah, this is a hard pass. Finn is more home alone than knock off Kevin in 4 is despite being with his sister. 6. The biggest problem to me, outside of the two "villains" not really being bad guys, is that the original Home Alones, the slapstick felt cartoony because it was, well, slapstick. But in this movie the traps come across like traps you'd see Jigsaw come up with. You can feel the suffering in their voices and reactions, while in the original the reactions are much more dumbfounded and wacky, which helped to soften the blow of some of the more extreme traps.

The antagonists were just bad and despicable which makes their pain hilarious. But in this heaping pile of garbage consisting of s*** of variety, rotten food, poisonous gas and regret, the protagonist just outright hates their own family without explaination and the robbers are just so down in their lives I feel like they should be the protagonist.

The thing that also made Home Alone and to a degree Home alone 2 so special to me was McCullough Culkin. He played the role with both a innocence and snarkyness that made you like Kevin and sympathize with him. You felt sad when he started to be sad that his family wasn't around. He was also a lot more intelligent in how he carried himself and acted.

I call this the riverdale effect. It’s so bad there’s no way they were trying. They must have purposely been making it bad so that people can post about it. That’s so insulting, I wish Hollywood writers would put in at least minimal effort

Home Alone isn't Home Alone without Macauley Culkin, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. The Wet Bandits are the perfect villains for a kid like Kevin. My thought for the proper Home Alone sequel features Kevin as an adult. He has a big family and a big house. He owns a toy making company where he does a lot of his own designing. He has a very smart but shy 8 year old girl that only Kevin understands. That is until she starts throwing a fit because her relatives are mean. She ends up doing the inevitable, "I hate you all" and Kevin stupidly says, "Maybe you should ask Santa for a new family." The family takes off for wherever, forgetting the daughter. She gets into a lot of hijinks. She even trashes Kevin's workshop... maybe out of spite. And then Harry and Marv show up, seeking to kidnap her to get back at Kevin. They stalk her and even threatens her before coming for her. Of course the daughter puts them through hell for as long as possible. And once again, Harry and Marv actually deserve everything they get. Long story short, Kevin comes home just in time to save the day. He punches both Marv and Harry out

It really feels like this was made by people who just don't understand Home Alone. They think that the only thing we care about is the traps when Home Alone is so much more than that. And what's worse is that there's literally no reason to watch this. Every other Home Alone movie is on Disney Plus so just watch 1 & 2 instead (hell I'll take 3 over this, at least that one had a likeable protagonist.)

Even the traps in this were a little dull and some only seemed to work because the adults were dumb. I mean ice on stairs makes sense, you can't walk "around" a flight of stairs into a basement. But ice on the drive way, I mean what was stopping them from just walking on the lawn.

I agree on the whole Max just thinking his families annoying. In the movie, each of his siblings gets an iconic line that drives him over the edge: Meghan: Oh, please. You're completely helpless. Everyone has to do everything for you. Jeff: Kevin! You are such a disease! Lenny: You're what the French call 'les incompetent.' 27:40 Buzz: Don't you know how to know phlem-wad? Please note that these are all basically their first lines. Their names are reveled within the first five minutes. Heck, even most of the cousins were referred to in this movie. I think they only said Max's sisters name once which is apparently Abby (definitely had to look that up)

Not a reboot, but a sequel. The cop is Buzz McCallister, aka the oldest sibling of Kevin, and Buzz even mentions Kevin from the first 2 films.

@@medes5597 yeah I feel like if they were cast in a different movie with a different story they would all mesh well. I really don’t know what was up with the casting director, but they did not do a good job for this concept. I just wonder who else auditioned or sent in tapes for those roles…

Dazz you should review the move Christmas Break-in. Its basically another Home Alone rip off that is set in a school. Its about this one girl who is trapped in her school because her parents lost track of time while working. And so she has to stay at the school til they come pick her up but she ends up staying there for quite awhile. Then 3 robbers come to the school because they just robbed a homeless shelter and its snowing so they needed a place to stay because they are in a ice cream truck. Its also free on KZfaq with ads

Flipping the script and having the film from the perspective of the people breaking and entering could have been interesting. We only see the family of the home being broke into from an outside perspective so we only see the public disarray and disagreements. The traps are a surprise because we don’t see them set up or triggered by the kid, just the reactions to the victims.

An actual idea for a home alone movie that could work: Kevin as an adult who is still immature gets left home alone by his wife and kid for probably some work reason, and Marv and Harry who are now old men break out of a senior home to get revenge and keven being a man child doesn’t realize they pose 0 threat to him now. And yes hopefully it would have all the original actors

Just watching this through the video is sickening. I love horror movies like saw and still am disturbed by how just violent it is. The way they made the attacks so focused and harsh instead of cartoony violence against characters we know are villians, I felt like I was watching a horror movie about a psychopathic child rather than a heartfelt Christmas movie :(

So, after watching two reviews of this movie, I'm disgusted by the fact that the burglars are made to be so sympathetic and yet we're supposed to laugh at them being tortured by this house. Marv and Harry were assholes, so seeing them in pain was funny. If they made Max into a villain, maybe it'd be better, but this misunderstanding thing makes him unintentionally a jerk for torturing these down on their luck people who just want to get their expensive doll back. You can do a good sympathetic villain, but not for a movie like this.
