@@AleksKieca plasma isn't light it has weight(or rather mass), the sun is completely made of plasma and is extremely heavy. But besides that Star Wars has never taken itself as a hard science sci-fy. Star Wars runs purely off the rule of cool and is much more of a fantasy universe set in space.

@@AleksKiecathere’s actually a lore based reason. Anakin builds his second lightsaber to be heavier at the hilt and wider, so he can use more powerful strikes to dominate combat. Master Yoda disapproved of this design based on its offensive nature. The Jedi saw the lightsaber not as a sword, but a shield. And Anakins lightsaber design went against these principles

To be fair, entire Disney fanfiction trilogy is about uneducated edgelords and pitiful brats 😂 They did make more or less adequate duel with Vader and Kenobi in Kenobi series though... I suppose, and remembering Tano vs Vader too, it was acceptable if i recall right

Tbh one of the biggest reasons why the modern duels suck is because they're so static and non varied. Look at the duel fron Episode I, the fight goes from a big room, to one with tight platforms over various elevations, to a cramped hallway filled with laser walls, to a cramped circular room with not much space to move around. The scenery was ever changing, the characters and actors had to adapt their fighting style based around their environment which changed constantly, so it never got boring because the way they fought constantly changed, theres a reason why every duel during the lucas era after ANH was made like this, because they realised that having two characters just swing Lightsabers at each other in the same room for 4 minutes gets old really quickly, Luke vs Vader on Bespin, Luke vs Vader on Death Star II, Anakin vs Obi Wan on Mustafar (The most dynamic duel in the series), all these duels were dynamic and ever changing, and thats a major reason as to why theyre good. Anakin and Obi Wan vs Dooku was the only exception to this rule, but that duel was still interesting because its entire gimmick was that anakin and obi wan were desperately trying to find a way to beat dooku only to fail, so instead of changing the environment, they changed who was fighting and how they were fighting, its still the worst prequel duel (and the fact it's the worst shows just how important the environment is in a duel like this), but it still tried to change things up as it went along. The duels from the Sequels don't do any of this. They all take place in one room or a specific place and they just consist of characters swinging their Lightsabers at each other without taking even the slightest advantage from the environment they're fighting in, that's not even mentioning the awful choreography that falls below ESB and RotJ, but choreography isn't the end all be all, it's certainly important, but the environment is just as if not more important, and the new duels just fail at that. This also applies to fights in shows like Obi Wan Kenobi,The Mandalorian, and other live action stuff.

While I will agree that dynamic environs can help with a duel, no matter how much you dress it up though, actors not being interested in their roles will always ruin these things be it star wars or something more grounded like lord of the rings, now given if they wanted to represent that much of the jedi teachings which I will remind you were destroyed in the second of the sequel movies were lost and modern jedi and sith were having to make their own styles then they overplayed it, the flailing about like they are wielding clubs instead of weapons build for a more civilized age is frankly too much, yeah make it clumsy but also add bits of the old styles in to their moves as well.

Even if there were no Jedi there to train Rey, the two should have fought faster. Luke also had little training and did well against Vader. Luke had enough time to teach Kylo Ren how to fight. Kylo Ren also had a few years of practice and his movements should be more fluid. In addition, according to Qui-Gonn, the Jedi see the future a few seconds before it happens, which gives them better reflexes. The two would have to react to each other's punches before we knew where the punch was going.

The really only downside with fights in the prequels is there's no emotions. It's just choreography. It's cool to see, ngl, but it adds no emotional weight. E.g. After Qui Gon dies from Maul, we'd expect Obi Wan to slash with anger. Maybe too hard and forceful which causes his defeat. Instead, nope some more choreography and dancing with the lightsabers

I will say the one thing the sequels do better is making it look more like a real fight. In rl you don’t do crazy tricks and just stand still or spin or just walk a bit. In rl you doge, weave, and block like the sequels and OG trilogy

A bunch of the those fights have been picked apart by modern duelists, and the prequel ones come off as being reasonably realistic in terms of what you would actually try to do with a bladed weapon (Force powers aside) or a lightsaber specifically (since you don’t have to worry about “edge”). That’s probably not super surprising since the fights were choreographed by an experienced duelist. The original trilogy also does a decent job, though slightly more obviously uses stage-fighting than real dueling (the stuff meant specifically for the stage is useless in real combat but is still its own skill set). Incidentally, the sequel era fights do quite poorly under analysis both as fights and as choreography (you can literally see stuntmen pausing during the big fight in The Last Jedi; they also had to edit out a knife in post-production or else part of the fight would have realistically ended with Rey stabbed in the side).

Lucas has just wonderful choreography in fights! In Disney, it looks as if weight is present not only at the handle, but also at the blade (despite the fact that the blade is like plasma, which has no weight in any way)

Looking at the differences between Disney lightsaber fights and George Lucas lightsaber fights is definitely significant. George Lucas did a much better job than Disney as Disney made the fights look like children fighting and not two adults fighting for their lives in an epic dual.

I always preferred the original feel to the fights from Star Wars and ESB. Where it felt like the sabers had weight and momentum, and the Jedi were struggling to control them.

Except lightsabers should not HAVE weight. They’re basically deadly flashlights. Of course, they’ll have momentum and be hard to use, but the one thing they should never be is heavy. And definitely not swung like a baseball bat like you see in the sequels. That’s bad fighting whether they have weight or not.
