Have you ever heard of a Cruisical? They are the Broadway Style Musicals made for the Disney Cruise Line. They've adapted many classic Disney Animated movies into Cruisicals, from Tangled to Hercules all of which were incredibly well received. But in 2008 Disney took a huge risk and adapted Pixar's classic Toy Story into a 50 minute musical with.... interesting results.
Special Thanks to Ben Durocher.

The ironic thing about this musical is that Disney originally tried to make the first Toy Story movie a musical but Pixar rejected the idea, and now look what happened many years later.... It also got some of the original voice actors back for this too, which is a nice touch.

Since it's a cruise ship, perhaps they were only able to get a film crew on the ship for the first run of the show. After the first show the ship was running continually, in order to re-film the show they'd have to make a change to the entire ship's schedule.

I think to Toy Story could work as a musical, there could be an 'I want' song, it just wouldn't be for Woody, it would be for Buzz. Expressing his passion for being a Space ranger would make the moment where he realizes the truth even more emotional for the audience, they could do a reprise of his 'I want song' there, I think I would love it if done correctly

One time (before the virus) I was on the Cars ride and I see the Mator animatronic didn't move, he just stayed in place so I decided to talk to a cast member about it when I got off the ride (I was only 7 or 8 when this happened btw). So I got off and talked to the first castmember I saw, looking back at it he looked like he knew nothing about animatronics but he still worked on the ride so it made sense to me. So basically the conversation went like this Me: Hi, um I think the hydraulic pressure in the first Mator animatronic was gone because when you got to that scene only the track of Mator's voice played Castmember: ... Me: ... Castmember: ... Me: Uh the... the animatronic didn't move? I wanted to know if you were aware of the animatronic not moving? Castmember: (figures out what I mean) OoOooooOoHhHhhh that's what you mean?! Yeah, we figured that out this morning but we didn't want to close the ride, have a nice day now princess I can't stop thinking that a 30+ year-old man who worked at DISNEYLAND didn't know a single thing about hydraulic pressure It haunts me every day XD

Toy Story: The Musical is a hot mess, but it’s a hot mess that I thoroughly enjoyed. I feel like this musical would have benefited from being two hours instead of an hour. Trying to cut the material doesn’t really work in a story like Toy Story, but making it a two hour musical would erase the problem of the audience being confused (and additional music tracks). Most of the musical numbers are good, but I feel like they would have benefited from being longer (“You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and “Busted/Make a Lot of Noise especially). I also believe the reason they cut out “Strange Things” and “I Will Go Sailing No More” was because either A. They were too long for an hour long musical or B. They just couldn’t fit the two musical numbers in, which is why “Strange Things” and its scene was shortened drastically and “I Will Go Sailing No More” was replaced with “To Infinity… and Beyond (Reprise)” and also the scene was shortened (which is a shame, they missed out on Mrs. Nesbit). As for the recording itself, oh boy the entire theater world would cry. The film crew should have waited at least two months before filming so that everyone has everything down to the point that mistakes are super rare. It really shows in this recording that this was recorded waaaay too soon with the amount of errors in it. Though, another huge problem that I’m a bit surprised you didn’t touch ob was the volume between the pit orchestra and the voice actors. Either pit was way too loud or somebody in the sound booth wasn’t paying attention because whenever someone (who wasn’t one of the animatronics) was singing, you can barely hear them. A lot of the songs would probably have been better if either one of the two problems were fixed. Also, going back to the musical numbers, at least half of this musical’s album consists of reprises. Those six reprises could have been cut down to maybe two or three. Woody would’ve benefited with an “I Am” song in the beginning to establish his character and arc he will have to go through, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” should have been longer (surprised that it isn’t seeing that Disney looooves to milk the heck outta their most popular music numbers), and other songs could have been added to help aid the story. Costumes and set pieces are some of the best I’ve ever seen in theater. The use of pre-recorded tracks for the animatronics was a stroke of genius, and having the main area of the stage be the toy’s world worked really well. That harness though… that was a hilarious fail. Honestly, they should have had a backup plan for Woody incase of something like that, so I got a feeling the actor had to improvise on the spot (poor guy). All in all, this musical is charming in its own way, but yea, two hours would work wonders for this cute musical. I personally would love to see a full stage adaptation for this musical, it does deserve better.

I saw Toy Story the musical back in 2015. Toy story is my favorite Pixar movie and I love musicals. So this to me was like sent from the heavens. The version I saw was definitely less flawed (although the show did stop at one point when Mr. potato head was too close to the trap door where buzz comes up and it tripped the sensor so buzz didn’t come up for the first time) I remember it as a spectacular show. The Sid parts were still really creepy but I LOVED the set and costumes. Also, our Woody was FANTASTIC (I was lucky enough to meet him at a special event later in the week and could praise him on his performance) I thought it was a really great show... but then again I was also 14 and may have been just blinded by my love for Toy Story😂

The one song Woody sings is actually really good. You skipped most of it. The animatronic things were really cool too. I heard someone saying they want to bring it to Broadway

I have LOVED your new style of using video of yourself for the last two videos! Your voice has always been very charismatic but getting to see your expressions as well as hear them honestly elevates the storytelling so much and makes me physically smile while I’m watching!

08:13 Woody doesn't say it the right way. He sounds like a troubled parent looking at the calender. Also, he said ''Pull my string, HIS birthday party's today?'' But it should be ''Pull my string, THE birthday party's TODAY?''

I know somebody else covered this already, but not in full, commenting on every part-detail like this, but could you please consider An American Tail Theater from Universal? That would be the most interesting non-Disney DIStory since Shrek!

Somewhere a stage manager is crying. Like ugly tears into a giant ice cream tub. Eventually they stopped crying, and found out that this was the recording that would be played in the state rooms every night.

As a performer who has been in Disney shows and other Cruiselines too, I can vouch for the theaters moving. We’ve had set that’s stored aerially so when the ship moves it becomes a hazard Incase the scrapping falls. Automation can also stop with the ship moving, the emergency stops can be triggered. We also have specific spots to be on for safety and spacing so if the ship moves and that makes things unsafe we also find ourselves cancelling shows. But this video was so amazing to watch, being in a handful of the shows I never really knew the history of it all. Moving to other ships and other companies totally opened my eyes into the creativity that ship shows have and I totally prefer doing them to the land based shows I’ve done because they’re so interesting!

Love your videos! You give such a good insight to everything! I live in the U.K. and have never been to the Disney parks ☹️ and getting to see what I’ve missed in my 21(nearly22) years of life makes me feel like I am experiencing it all, the good, the bad and the Toy Story musical 😂 (plus Shrek is one of my all time favourite musicals) 😊

Yes I have seen it on KZfaq a long time ago. I was in 7th grade and it was pretty cool because I was home alone that day. My favorite song is when woody is reminiscing with Andy and he sings "a shootout at the O.K. corral, a little wild wild west pretending" Also this is my first time seeing this channel, and this is great. Thanks for making this vid

If you notice in the movie Toy Story that sometimes, the eyes of the computer animated toy characters don’t blink together on screen. Buzz Lightyear, for instance, when he first came to life, you notice that his eyes didn’t blink together.
