We lived in Anaheim from 1975-1986. I was 7 years old when we moved there. We originally came from Santa Fe NM, and whenever any of our family, relatives would come out to visit, we would take them to Disneyland. I remember my cousins my age couldn't believe that we lived in "paradise" and could walk to Disneyland any time we wanted. My father was wealthy and we had a beautiful 2 story house with lemon and orange trees and they couldn't believe it. It was a great time in my life. I'm proud to say, I lost count at 89 times visiting Disneyland. Today that number has to be 125 times.

Similar Story, moved out of AZ (1979) when 12years old. But, I am guessing that I have been to Disneyland about 500 Times! Got 4 kids, and it was affordable in the 90s and 2000s, but today it is SO EXPENSIVE I don't know how families with little kids can afford it.

My Grandpops worked hard building Disneyworld. I'm always going to be proud of him. He's is getting on late in his years, but I will always admire that his contribution to the world will stand for years to come for all to enjoy. What a time it was back then.

They literally put Main Street up and almost finished from nothing but a dirt patch in 4 days. That is just amazing. One of the coolest videos on the internet, and inspiring things I've ever seen. Thank you to everyone who worked on this park, and this history.

Oh what a nostalgic rush... this just blew me away!! My sister and I worked at the park from 1960 to 1964. Admiral Joe Fowler lived down the street from us in Corona del Mar and he was the one who made it possible for us to work there, bypassing a waiting list of 5000 applicants! I was a ride operator working in Fantasyland, and my sister worked on Main Street. Thanks for posting this!

The first time I visited Disneyland was in December 1966. I was with my mom & sister waiting to board the monorail when many of the employees started crying. The news that Walt had just died reached the park. One of the sadest days of my life.

I was folding papers for my paper route when I caught the headline and just went numb. Walt was like a second father to me via television, after my dad died in 1962. They were the same age. Both died from smoking.

Not sure if U caught it in the BEGINNING? Walt Disney had TOWERS constructed w/CAMERAS MOUNTED ON THEM… I THINK THIS HAPPENED BCOZ my ONLY VISIT to WDW had plaques around to explain the different processes it took to eventually have what they have today? The one plaque stated that when Walt had MEETINGS IN NYC THE BANKERS stated THEY NEEDED SOMETHING IN WRITING OR SOME SORT OF BUSINESS PLAN? Sooo Walt had ARTISTS draw his🌟VERY 🌟FIRST🥳MICKEY🌟to🤓portray what we take for GRANTED TODAY❣️

I was a little kid living in Garden Grove, my mom packed a picnic lunch and me and my friend Danny rode our bikes to Anaheim and watched the construction activity. It was magic.

My mom was a little girl living there at around that time too. She was the youngest of 4 sisters and remembers watching the Disney fireworks through the orange groves along with a bunch of other neat little stories of growing up there.

My dad worked for the audio recorders that got the original Jungle Cruise sound contract...Walt insisted on a longer tape loop than anybody had ever asked for, so that the background sounds not repeat over the duration of the ride. So my dad ran the tape from the machine...out into the hall...over a series of hat-racks...into the bathroom....around another hat-rack...and all the way back to the studio again! Just another example of Walt's attention to detail :-)

And then the new Imagineers knew so much and removed the quintessential kookaburra birds that made the exotic sound authentic. The new guys thought, that since that bird exists in Australia and not Africa that they'd just go with the BORINGGGGG whistle birds. The atmosphere was assassinated.

We went last summer. 165.00 per person. Getting on the tram from the parking lot I noticed everyone looking great. Nice clothes, make up on mom’s, kids clean and happy. It made me realize people really get ready to go to Disneyland and look nice. It’s a lot of money to go.

I was one lucky 10 year boy to visit Disneyland in 1955, shortly after it opened. Myself, my 8 year old sister, and parents had the time of our lives. I still have vivid memories of the day almost 60 years later. One thing I remember my Dad saying was that the day cost our family of four $20. That was for everything including a meal there. I got the impression that he thought it was a great expense. I wonder what it would cost now?

Green Marble It was 60 years ago, but certain memories seem locked in my mind like it was yesterday. We had to drive about 50 miles and I thought we'd never get there. I was impressed by the parking lot. It was enormous. After going through the entrance gates, we rode the train around the perimeter of Disneyland. It gave a great view of most of the property. Two venues stick out from all the rest. I got to drive a small car on the freeway set up. And the top memory was the Jungle Boat Ride. The whole experience was heaven on earth to my ten year mind. Pure magic!

This is just an incredible walk down memory lane from a perspective I've never enjoyed before. My first visit to Disneyland was in June 1961. I was 9 years old and I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Thanks so much for sharing this incredible compilation of time-lapse video with other videos to share the behind the scenes details.

I enjoy reading all the comments of those whose family members worked on Disneyland...and their earliest experiences when it opened. I came in 1964 to live in Whittier and went there a lot as a teen.

The park opened a little less than 30 days before I was born. I think I was around 7 years old, when I first visited. Didn't get back there again, until 1974, when I was stationed down at Camp Pendleton. I made a few weekend trips up there from Oceanside via Greyhound bus.

This is a wonderful look into a world that is long gone. I was lucky to live in Irvine in the 70s when there were still orange groves and strawberry fields. And Disneyland wasn't packed all the time. It was the end of a great era in SoCal history.

This is such a wonderful piece. My grandmother Marie Byrd and Walt were good friends and I was so fortunate to be there on opening day. We kids called Mr Disney "Uncle Walt"

Growing up in the valley I remember many trips to Disneyland, probably not till 60s since I was born 57, I remember the ticket books and the "E" ticket, usually had books around the house with the low tickets even if it was Mr Toads Ride. Amazing, a man that made a living with stop motion animation took the time and expense to archive this.

This brings back and even explains some of the memories of my childhood. I was taken to Disneyland by my grandparents within a couple of years of its opening. Seeing the construction of the rides here - in this format - has reactivated those memories from so many years ago. Thank you!

I visited Disneyland in 1957 when I was fifteen. It really was a fantastic creation. I saw these stop-motion movies on television before I went. Memories. Thank you. Please do not have a fit if I say it could have been built in metric. If you work in feet and inches you use a lot of your time measuring feet, inches and fractions of inches. If it was metric everything is in millimetres. If that is not precise enough, then tenths of millimetres. Just suggesting that SOME DAY the USA should go metric. It saves money and is easier for the tradesmen. Cheers! :-D

But you wouldn't want to know him. I was eagerly urged by Michael Broggie to write him a happy little email and got a phone call 15 minutes later and told to BEAT IT. From that moment on whenever I saw him at a convention I attempted to lie and say I was sorry for what I didn't do. He defiantly held extremely long conversations while I stood by to talk briefly with him----and at one point he reached across with his arm on my chest to shake someone's hand, but he wouldn't allow me a moment. He even went so far to have someone run out and start a conversation with me so he could get away. In truth, he's a sleazy, nasty, person with a filthy disposition, having delusional ideas about his place in history. All the greats were my friends, and they respected me. That's because they are what Tony attempts to be. Don't be fooled for one second. He isn't Disney material.

Amazing!! I was born 20years after Disney opened. My first time enjoying it as a kid was 87 when splash mountain and star tours opened..It was a great time in my life. God bless Walt Disney for giving us this amazing place

It’s crazy expensive. A crappy small lollipop is $8. With 5 people, expect to spend over $1000 if you plan to eat there and buy snacks and drinks durring the day

So cool. Amazing that the original Disneyland was built in only a year from groundbreaking to opening day. I have an interview for attractions tomorrow with Disneyland and I Wish Upon a Star that I can add my name to the list of Cast Members that have had the privilege to make Walt's dream come to life.

I was so happy to see this footage. Also glad that someone was just curious enough to check the film before it was moved to long term storage, who knows what would have happened to it then. I hope that it would all be transcribed to video and be able to view it all at some point.

My Grandfather made the Carnation Ice Cream Store interior (all Oak) single-handedly, He also worked on Walt's Home Dinning Room, Walls, Floor and Ceiling . Walt had been to a Bar/Lounge by the Hollywood Park race track called "The Cockatoo Inn" and he inquired who do the elaborate Walls, the Ceilings and the Bar all in wood ( it was my GrandPa), My Dad and Sister went to "the Day Before the Grand opening" for all people that made Disneyland happen.

It almost brought a tear to my eye when I heard the pirate ship had been torn out. Climbing around it was one of the strongest memories I have of when my mother took me to Disneyland around 1978 when I would have been 4. I haven't been back since 1980, but watching videos about the place as we shelter from the Coronavirus makes me want to take another trip there.

I am 16 minutes in to your video and you were talking about how Walt was riding a bicycle and there was no film of him doing that before. And how nice it would be to ride a bicycle around when the rides aren't open yet. I literally laughed out loud being a cast member from back in the day my favorite thing was riding through the park on my bicycle when it was 2 in the morning and the music and the lights are still playing and there's no one in the park and you're by yourself. Best memory ever well I want to say that but what are the best!

Absolutely stunning footage and narration!!! Thank you for posting this! A new book "Three Years in Wonderland" by Todd James Pierce just came out in April of 2016 to tell untold stories of the making of Disneyland. My Uncle, Eugene "Doc" Lemmon is listed as 'the fifth official employee of Disneyland' on pg. 104 of Todd's book. He was the Disneyland Park Operations manager from 1956-61. My uncle using his Disneyland experience later picked the site, named, and was the President of Magic Mountain in Valencia, Ca. My pic depicts my uncle's hard-had that he wore while Magic Mountain was under construction.

Your uncle is a genius at branding! "Magic Mountain" is one of the best names ever created, not only for its sound and alliteration, as well as its magical feeling, but also because it actually relates to the terms: the place is magical and it's on a mountain (sort of). As for being the fifth employee of Disneyland...WOW!

1/29/14 Went to Disneland today. The park has been kept very close to the original with a few updates. It still feels like it did in the 70's when I went as a kid. I am glad they are keeping it frozen in time! The art, the cleanliness, 4 themes and main attractions were very well maintained. Thouroughly impressed. Walt Disney's presence was there, no doubt.

Getting just a ride built today takes a couple years, imagine getting a whole park together. The castle, Main Street, the railroad, Fantasyland and a lot more.

Me too, Don Neary. I was also 10. I lived in Buena Park and my family visited there the first week. There were workmen walking around with skill saws and tools in their hands still trying to finish construction. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and the Tea Cups were my favorite rides. I had just moved from Long Beach where I had grown up playing at the Nu Pike. Disneyland was a quantum leap forward. The quality of construction, artistry, imagination and cleanliness was on a level never seen before. You could buy a brand new 3 bedroom home in Buena Park at the time for around $15,000. Ours was 12 minute ride by car from Disneyland.

I love seeing pictures of Walt while the park was being built. The flannel shirt, the cowboy hat, heck even the cigarette reminds me of my grandfather. My grandpa does have darker skin than Walt, but sometimes the resemblance is uncanny - especially when grandpa has his mustache.

I still remember watching the castle construction footage as a little boy in the old Walt Disney Story exhibit that was a part of the Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln attraction in the 1980's. The animatronic owl that used to introduce the True Life Adventure films in the Walt Disney Story is currently on the first lift of Splash Mountain. The history in Disneyland is amazing. Thanks for narrating this Tony.

My favorite was that rocket ride In Tomorrowland and we were sooooo disappointed when they took it down. It was great fun to hear the music playing from live bands while you rode in the rockets and ran from ride to ride In Tomorrowland as a kid. Disneyland has become overcrowded and less fun since the 70’s and 80’s.

A friend of mine's grandfather was a farmer on part of the land where it was built. Part of the sale was that the family would have free use of the park and a membership to the 33 club.

In the 1950s , when Disneyland first opened. It was surrounded by lemon and orange groves. Knotts berry farm was a way bigger attraction. My dad worked for Lockheed, which would rent the park for Lockheed Family affairs. They would set up a huge catering tent. Feeding the employees and their families. Most of the rides weren’t open. I preferred mining for gold, and stage coach rides and the gravity defying miners shack, at Knotts. Later in my career as a carpenter, I had a big part in building Snoopys summer camp at Knotts.

My first trip to Disneyland was 1990. I was 4... only a few memories but dang it was fun! Also, I was 4 and got to go on the Matterhorn... either I was a tall kid or they didn’t care in 1990

Wish they would commercially release ALL of the footage of Disneyland being built in DVD format and/or put it on Disney+. I want to see every second of it, every angle, every frame. This is not only Disney History. This is American History. This is the building of Dreams. Dreams made manifest. 🎠🎪🏰

This was awesome footage I would love to see more. I was born in 1953 in Whittier and after the opening my mother and dad took me to Disneyland every other weekend if not more. I always dreamed of working in one of the parks for Disney but I have not made it yet and I am now 61.

This is so... fantastic, to see Disneyland being constructed. The week before the park opened to the public, all the construction workers and there family were invited, for free of course, to enjoy the fruits of their labor. And I'm guessing to test the new rides to see if there were any bugs that needed to be fixed. I was just 14 at the time and what a thrill to be part of that history. We went on day three of that week. We actually met Mr. Disney while we were in adventure land. That was the icing on the cake! At that time we were living in Redondo Beach, CA. cool video. my first visit to Disneyland was in the 70's. Well, I was born in 1972. Watching this video gives a cool perspective on the creation of Disneyland. Also working at Disneyland in 1997-1999 as a parking lot tram announcer give me behind the scenes look at the magic.

I can guarantee that my great-grandparents' house lot that they built their home on is visible in some of these shots. In the late 60s and early 70s, their house was a stone's throw from Disneyland's fence. What side, I don't know. I remember them talking about Disneyland and its construction while pointing at the fence. I had no idea what a "Disneyland" was until after they took me a day or so later. Thereafter, that fence seemed to exude magic.

My stepfather was a dignitary June 1955. his name, Jan Merlin. He was on the TV show Tom Corbett Space Cadets and that must have been so very cool for him!

It’s sad actually. Years ago I watched as huge “master planned” communities were built on top of some of the best farm land in the world. All over California hectare upon hectare were paved over and covered with houses and strip malls. What’s even worse is just 30 minutes drive East of those places was land that wasn’t good for farming or ranching but would do just fine for houses etc. Instead the developers destroyed huge swaths of agricultural wonderland. Dirt so perfect it was almost worth it’s weight in gold. You could literally grow anything you wanted to with little to no effort. I remember helping dig holes for the power company to place the big utility poles in. The holes were 30-36 inches diameter and 10’ft deep. Not once did we ever hit a rock bigger than a golf ball and we found almost none at all. Just rich peat dirt and some sandy loam all of which had good drainage to boot Idiots just greedy idiots. Where once grew life giving nourishment in the form of fruit, vegetables and grains plus cattle now stands miles upon miles of 40 year old tract homes that nobody even wants anymore. What a waste.

In 1956, we were all in the car, ready to drive to Disneyland for the first time. As my dad drove down Kelvin toward Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills, we all felt and heard a horrible grinding from underneath the car. We lurched to a stop. The transmission had given out. Our trip to the Magic Kingdom was postponed by two weeks. But it was worth the wait.

What amazing video! It's so incredible how one man had so many ideas and was able to create all of his ideas to make it a reality. I absolutely love Disneyland/World. I have so many great memories of my daughter and I there. It's still a very special place and will always be. We are able to let all of the stresses of life behind us. It's such a magical place!

And Walt was a perfectionist. That's part of why it's so great. But he was also lousy with money (as most dreamers are) and that's why Roy is the reason Disney didn't go bankrupt. (But if Walt really wanted something that was way over budget he'd agree with his brother but then go behind his back and do it anyway!)

Things can still be built very quickly today if you have enough money, just like Disney did. The biggest problem with the project today would be waiting for the materials made overseas. Everything was made in the USA in the 50's.

Truly amazing footage. I’ve never been to Disneyland but went to Disneyworld right after it opened. I wonder what Walt Disney would think of Disney Corp today. It’s a monstrous money making machine that has a monopoly like presence on Hollywood. I’m afraid it’s too big for it’s own good.

I have photos of me in a stroller when I was 1 year old in 1957 in the park. I grew up in La Puente and live in Orange for many years....to see where it s gone from where it was is mind boggling. I remember our parents dropping us off on a Saturday afternoon when we were 12 and 13 years old and staying till the fireworks and then our parents picking us up. I haven't been there since my son was 16, he is now 33. Thinking I need to go back if I can get the loan approved for admission :-)
