Although I like none of the later changes, the biggest tragedy to me was the loss of the final pirate battle. It represented to me that the pirates had so much in-fighting that they had reduced themselves to a few remaining survivors murdering their own crewmates in an orgy of greed, bringing about their own downfall.

So true. They changed it from an almost gleeful celebration of chaos to a shallow celebration of greed. I can’t stand that the terrifying and exciting climactic tableau is now just the film’s corny lead character in a room of gold.

My fave of all the rides . 1. First time 1989 when I was 12 with my father who died a year later. 2. Returned to Disney for the first time since 89, 08/2018 and road it again 5 times with my 10 year old son. A very special ride to me 😌

Pre-movies/PC changes was so much better. It actually felt like a journey witnessing the descent into piracy and its evil and ills and the punishment that followed that criminal behavior in the end. It had a mystical and almost eerie feel to the ride. Now it's fast, cheap, and commercial feeling.

You really think that it's the Movie's influence that made them change it? Think again! They caved in and gave to virtue signaling PC culture. It has ruined comedy and pretty much everything else. I wish that more people would stand up and demand that they change it back. Pirates are supposed to plunder and take the women and treasure. That's what pirates are! I mean if you no longer wish to show pirates then don't, but to whitewash and bastardize them into something that they are not, is just unforgivable. What are they supposed to be doing in that town? Stopping in to say hello?

Still one of my family's favorite attractions at the park, although my favorite part of the ride isn't really the meat of the ride itself; it's the beginning part where it's floating past the restaurant and into the area of the swamp before going down into the area where the pirates are. When we lived in LA we bought season passes for our family just so we could pop in every so often solely to take that ride and eat in that restaurant.

Nice. I always rather enjoyed the smell of the place too. It always had something of a briny, "moist" smell (but not moldy) to it, if that makes sense. One of the things that sets Disney apart from virtually every other theme park is that in each of their rides they cater to as many of the senses as possible, so I'd suspect that smell in The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction is intentional.

I'm surprised you didn't touch on the brains behind the ride: the original was all analog, recorded on banks of multi track audio tape. IMHO the ride original concept was much better. The experince, immersion on the storytelling of pirates just sacking a village, and doing pirates stuff. The change to fit jack sparrow movie for me made it artificial shallow experience. Missed some of the magic of the former ride. I believe missed magic from Wall Disney itself, replaced by the grayness of the current ceo's. As it happened in removing alien encounter, peoplemover, and others.

I guess I'm lucky in that there are fewer of us who remember the OG 1967 version -- I first rode it in 1970 when I was 15 and was absolutely blown away, remembering everything about it and telling all my friends back in NY about it. It took until 1994 or so for me to visit again, on a corporate field trip. Everything I remembered was pretty much intact. Then a couple of years after that I took my then-young kids to POTC in Disneyworld, FL, in 1997. I just watched a video of all the new digital projections and Johnny Depp etc. and I'm sorry, they took all the sensory magic out.

Great video. I have often thought that the key to the impact of the original ride is that the pirates are punished at the end by being burned, exploded, and also thrust down into a metaphorical fiery hell, except for the "fiery" part, which of course are real/fake flames. So when they changed the ride to be more politically correct, they lost the whole "If you abuse women, you will go to hell" storyline, moral, and metaphor. The ride originally showed pirates to be evil, reckless, and foolish. Going there in the sixties and seventies, it was chilling. Bad guys meet their doom, which is hell, you know? Wow, it was a powerful lesson. Those changes were, still, probably the right thing to do. More recently, though, the story is that the pirates are just so clever and funny they get to go to a jewel filled "heaven," if you will. Or, if you haven't seen the films or forgot them, the moral is now along the lines of: Rob, pillage, plunder, and sack and you'll get rich, especially if you're sneaky about it (like that one pirate, who you wouldn't know is Capt. Jack Sparrow, so just remember to be sneaky about doing evil and you'll totally score). So, fwiw, I am less happy about the unfortunate anti-moralizing of the ride nowadays...

Yes, Elim, I'm afraid this is what happens when the designers don't grasp the meaning of what they're seeing, which is an underlying reason for the rides' enduring popularity. The filmmakers, in contrast, absolutely understand this about the ride. The outright religious meaning in the films is placed front and center, with characters literally arguing about scripture, worrying about the fate of their eternal souls, going to "hell" and back, deaths, resurrections, gods incarnate, and on and on -- including swordfighting on a rolling samsara wheel! Amazing!

I worked in the main kitchen area under New Orleans Square back in 1983 for the summer. Greatest experience was walking down those stairs into the ride before they opened! An employee/cast member Bob allowed me to walk up to the treasure scene, bed scene, and the skeletons with the wine going down their throat scenes! He would tell me not to touch anything which of course I didn't. I had 20 minutes to explore before they started the animation and then the sound. One in a million get to do that! I could have gotten fired for it but I planned my adventure a couple of weeks in advance by knowing when my managers would be at a morning meeting and which horrible ones would not be working so they couldn't see me open one of those doors leading to certain entries of the ride! Many of those exit signs you see in the beginning of the ride led up to a long corridor that has the underground kitchen that feeds all of New Orleans restaurants. How Disney caters to the PC Left makes me sick!

I proposed to my wife of 11 years, on the ride, near the middle of the attraction. I held on to that ring box tight on the first big drop haha 😆 we still treasure that moment.

I went to Disney World this past Christmas and rode the Pirates ride a few times. I especially wanted to see what the new change to the bride auction was like. Now in my opinion, after riding a few times, I came to the conclusion that while it’s not as bad of a change as some people make it out to be, it’s still a rather weird change. I’m sure I’ll adjust given time. However I think a good comprise would’ve been keeping the bride auction and turning the red head into a fellow crew member, having her fire her gun at the crowd of drunk pirates trying to make passes at her rather than at the cargo. Maybe even having her shout some smart insults back at them.

Fantastic! Pirates was going to be called the Blue Bayou? Awesome. It is also one of if not the highest capacity rides in the whole park! That capacity means a lot to a park attendee as the lines at lower capacity rides can be tough.

I went on the attraction for the first time this year (well, not exactly this one cause I went to Disneyland Paris but I see they're pretty similar) and I absolutely loved it. I'm 21 years old and obviously didn't get to know the old version as I was born just one year before the first movie was released, but I still think it's an amazing ride. I know most of you who got to know the original prefer it that way, but honestly, I was so happy and excited to see my pal Jack at the end. I'm definitely repeating when I come back and this time I'll bring my mom, she loves the movies as well 🖤

Loved hearing Dick Tufeld narrating the promo commercial. Danger Will Robinson....Danger! It's also great to hear Thurl "Tony The Tiger" Ravenscroft's voice. Hope they never get rid of it. Disney used some of the best-known voice actors in the business.

The boobytrapped skeleton turning into a living pirate is so well done! Is it a peppers ghost effect? i noticed the transition was our view passed the ropes, is there glass there to reflect it or is it done some other way? Edit: it's just half a skeleton and half a "living" guy with a two sided mirror through the middle

I understand making technical improvements for added realism, but to change scenes in the ride is like making changes to the Mona Lisa! It is a Masterpiece that should have never been altered to satisfy woke complaints! The biggest changes in the future for the Pirates, I hope, will be to return the attraction to it's absolute original, as Walt himself approved state!
