I have a 2018 GL1800 Tour. I just recently had to have the bike towed after a ply separated in the OEM Dunlop rear tire during my vacation. I have seen this video before, so I was not concerned when the tow driver (a motorcyclist himself with 6 years experience towing motorcycles) tied it down by the handlebars. We even used the Canyon Dancer handlebar straps that I had with me for a good connection. He tied it down EXACTLY like you show in this video. Once we arrived at the shop and took it off the truck, the first thing I noticed is that the handlebars now wobbled up and down on both sides. Why? Because tying it down by the handlebars EXACTLY as you show damaged the steering crown/assembly underneath. Now I have to have that repaired in addition to a new rear tire installed. BTW, have you seen the notice on The Wrench (a newsletter for Honda technicians) dated May 2018? It says: (quote) "Do not attach any straps or tie downs to the handlebars as this can damage the heated grips and/or handlebar switch gear". I can send you a copy if you wish. Great video Max. Just bad advice. You really should remove this from the Internet, especially since you stated to Elliot Parsowith 3 months ago "We have since learned that there is ONE bike in the world you shouldn't tie down by the bars, and it is the 2018+ Goldwing." No one would see that unless they dug through all the comments. - Mike

Hi Michael, Sorry about your tire, that's a bummer. It's important to note that all 2018 Goldwings were improperly assembled at Honda, and thus damaged by Honda, not by you or your tow truck driver. How you tied the bike down may have been the final straw, but your bike was already damaged, and Honda will repair it under warranty. You might also consider replacing the aluminum spindle with the stainless steel one we make while the bike is apart. I have thought about taking this video down, but there's so much good info in it. Most people with the new Goldwing have purchased Goldstrike tie down hooks, and now Kuryakyn has a set as well. I recommend both to our customers.

@@Traxxion Max, you are absolutely right. I have since learned that Honda issued a product bulletin about the steering issue and will fix it for free. Why they did not tell me about it during the almost 3 years that I have owned the motorcycle I don't know. Maybe they wait until you have a problem to inform you. If I use your stainless steel steering spindle instead of the Honda aluminum one, do I need the spindle (SKU 18GLT-SSSS), the steering safety pin (SKU GL18T-SSP) and the steering stem nut (SKU 18GLT-SSSK)? And yes, after reading your response, I immediately purchased a set of Goldstrike tie down brackets. Thanks for the info! - Mike

@@michaellynch2559 if you have that list of parts, you will have the most bomb-proof steering setup on Earth. Also, it will allow you to use the original 76 ft/lb torque spec Honda uses on the 01-17 bike with steel spindles. The 2018+ updated spec lowered that torque to 51 ft/lbs for the hollow aluminum spindle.

Hello Max. I've owned two GW in my lifetime and a few occasions had to trailer. Last time was a return trip to Ga from Arkansas after finishing up a job contract there for a couple of years. Strapped and tied down very much like you're showing and have never had any problems. As for the new GW, I first laid eyes on one there at Traxxion. I imagine they will be like the GW of the past. Great machines but always room for improvements. Great vid. Entertaining as well as informative for anybody that 'doesn't get it'.

Dropping real world facts. In 23 years of riding and tying bikes down I've always used the handlebars in some fashion. I also always use cam straps. So many of my riding buddies comment on the dangers of cam strap failure and I can see where someone may have that fear but, I've never had an issue ever with a cam strap. Good advice sir and I'm glad to see you put it out there.

Kevin...I've had cheapo cam straps loosen up in the rain when the strap gets wet. I now use Ancra cam straps, which cost a little more, but they stay tight even when wet. And fifteen years later they hold as good as when they were new. I also do the half knot trick.

I bought a bike unexpectedly once (stumbled upon a great deal when I wasn't even looking) so we loaded into my pickup truck and I bought some tie downs at Home Depot. They were 4 for $9.99 in a package. Awful and chintzy compared to the Ancra.

I've used cam straps for many years. I found hooking a tarp strap on the loose end and just enough tension to keep it tight. I've never had a issue with any of my road bikes coming loose. And I don't have to crush the suspension. Someday I hope to get condor wheel chock but for now I will have to use my Harbor freight chock.

Max, one of your bright installers mentioned to me how easy it would be if the new steel spindles could have the upper internal hollow machined to accept a socket extension or large hex key to allow the spindle to be held.
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 3 жыл бұрын
It presents its own problem, as we then would have to make a hex key safety pin. You'll really only require the help of an assistant for a few minutes, and applying any amount of torque above 50 to a free floating spindle will be very hard to do by yourself, regardless. We have a couple of hundred spindles made, we'll see how fast they sell and judge then. Watch the news... we have Broken Spindle #2 coming into our shop in a few days...

I have a 2018 Tour Model with only 6k miles. It has only be trailered one time when I bought it and trailered it home about 450 miles. Last fall, I noticed a bit of play in the handle bars, mostly when going over the RR tracks near my home. Upon inspection, I found my steering crown nut was loose in a big way. I was pretty shocked. I also had very little final drive gear oil when I changed it at around 5k miles. Pretty surprised coming from Honda. 🙊🙈
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 4 ай бұрын
There was a "Service Bulletin" from Honda for 2018 models for your problem. That almost certainly means your steering spindle has been damaged. The crown nuts were torqued for steel threads, and the spindle is made of aluminum. If you haven't had it inspected by a Dealer, you need to. Also, check out my videos on this topic: Steering Spindle I have a patented safety pin, and a replacement stainless steel spindle for sale as well.

Max McAllister On a ferry... You need rubber on the steel surface of the vessel.... If you placed it on a centre stand. It would more easily slide. It is generally accepted to place the bike on the side stand on a ferry.... Then strap it down and compress the suspension. Of course there are no chocks on these ferries.

No problem! We have since learned that 2018 bikes have a crown nut that was overtorqued at the factory, and that towing the bike tied down by the bars can cause the nut to strip the steering spindle. It is a free update your Honda dealer should provide. 2019 or later bikes are fine. Presently, we recommend using BOTH Goldstrike and Kuryakyn tie down hooks on 2018+ Wings to prevent any problems.

And some chocks set the bike rock solid even without straps, but I strap any way. In this model of bike, there are strong frame holes right under the seat that accept most strap hooks, Its where Honda had the straps in the shipping crates. My service manager said tying down at the handle bars could blow the fork seals if too tight.
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 3 жыл бұрын
This is a bit of a misunderstood myth. Seals don't blow from pressure, as the fork is designed to travel to mechanical bottom out with out damaging the seals. Seals can leak from having the bike tied down too tightly from causing the two halves of the forks to cock against each other with great pressure which puts great pressure, and then wear, on one side of the fork seals, and then they will begin to leak... but this doesn't happen in a short tow. It happens from a long distance or many long distance tows with the bike cranked down.
