In this video, I show you step by step, my process for mounting a finished watercolor painting to a birch board. I show you how to seal the painting, adhere the painting to a board and seal the painting with wax medium. This is a cost-effective and easy way to display your artwork without the need for a frame and glass.
I discuss the difference between a cradle board and plain board surface. Next I show you how to seal your artwork with Krylon UV Resistant Acrylic Coat. Make sure you complete this step out of doors as the fumes are toxic. Use an old paint brush to apply the Golden Gel Medium to the back of the painting and the board. Use a Speedball brayer to eliminate air bubbles between the paper and board. You should allow this to dry overnight before proceeding. Use a shart utility knife to cut around the board to trim the painting. Finally, apply the wax medium with paper towel and buff to a sheen with a clean, lint-free cloth.

So much helpful information here! Thank you. I just subscribed. Is there a particular reason for using birch wood over any other wood?

Great question. No, this wood is just what is affordable and available at my local DIY store.

Awesome! I've been ready to try this for a while, but wasn't finding full or clear instructions in one place, so I am grateful for your generosity in creating this video. Question: when you measure using the mat, and mark the corners, then turn the paper over, how do you know where to make your pencil box on the back? (I'm confused because the pencil marks are on the front and no longer visible once you turn the paper over) ...? I love this approach for protecting and displaying watercolors - and I think its less presumptuous (less costly, less old-school, safer in the mail, etc) than framing my pieces that I want to gift. Thanks so much for this video!

Great question. After making the small marks on the front of the painting, I used a ruler to measure the distance from the edge of the paper to these marks. (this is shown in the video, but only briefly). Then I turned over the paper and transferred the measurements. Then placed the board and traced it. This is the most reliable way I have found to get my placement accurate. THANKS!!

Helpful tips, thank you. As for my art, I'm not sure I'd want to use a spray on gouache as it reactivates and could get spotty. I've used Dorland's Wax which makes a good seal but I liked the idea of UV protection. Guess I need to do more research. :)

After spraying I also use Dorland's Wax, which I mention at the end of this video. However I have tested this technique on watercolor only....never gouache. Good luck.

Hi Kris. Wonderful tutorial and I do love your painting style! Beautiful. I wanted to ask a question. I've just finished two of my paintings with this technique and used Gamblin cold wax. I found that I was getting swirly streaks when trying to buff the wax, kind of like it was not adhering to parts of the painting. I'm wondering if I either applied too much wax or too little? And would it be safe to re-apply another coat of the wax? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you again for this tutorial! ♥

Hmmm. It's difficult to say whether it is too much or too little, without seeing it. I always spray my paintings with a fixative and UV coating first. I assume you did that. That helps the wax go on more evenly. I also use Dorland's wax and I'm not familiar with Gamblin Cold Wax so I can't really speak to that. Sorry I can't be more help. Did you do a search specifically about how to use Gamblin Cold Wax? That might help.

@@KrisDeBruineStudio Thanks Kris. I think I have worked it out. I didn't allow time to cure...didn't realise the wax had resins in it. I left them a few days and the marks have disappeared! Yay! I thought I was going to lose two paintings haha! 😍

Have you used this technique for large (30x22") paintings?
@KrisDeBruineStudio
@KrisDeBruineStudio Жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, one time I mounted a very large print to a cradle board using this method. You definitely need TWO PEOPLE as it can be difficult to position the paper. I would also recommend having two brayers, so you can both work at removing any air bubbles between the paper and the board. The end product looked great...but it was a little nerve wracking to do. Have fun!!

? I have a painting that I want to attach to cradle board. My painting is an odd size. I'm think to paint the cradle board with black acrylic paint, and then centering my watercolor painting on the board. The black acrylic paint will then look like frame. ?My question: Will this work?
@KrisDeBruineStudio
@KrisDeBruineStudio 3 жыл бұрын
I have never adhered a painting to a painted board. But I have seen others do it. I imagine it would work just fine. I think it would be important that the black paint is acrylic -- like the gel medium -- to ensure good adhesion. If it is a priceless piece of art....maybe you could test the process first with something less precious.
