G’day, John. With all the hand on that horse, this morning, it was just a matter of time before someone grabbed the reins. It really is good to see so many interacting with the horse, the question is, how long before the horse decides; “enough, folks !!”. Your narrative, John, is just priceless, and I thank you for your insights, and impeccable sense of where to be for the best views.

Of all the ones I've known most were attached to someone who had health risks. Such as migraines, diabetes or epilepsy. You never touch them, as they are on alert for any signs that the human may be ailing. You can talk to the person, just NOT the dog.

Some of these tourists are total fools, and one of these days a horse is going to bite off a few fingers, and it will not be the horse's fault. These tourists need to know that it is a privilege to be allowed to get that close to the men and women soldiers, and the horses, who are also military members. This is a military installation, and not Disneyland. The horses and soldiers are not for tourist amusement, as this is their job. The tourists need lessons in showing respect for those men and women who protect their lives so expertly when on UK soil.

@@ladyd8339 the Army didn't make it into Disneyland. The tourists found Horse Guards when walking either to or from Buckingham Palace or just walking past. They noticed the horse and guards, took the pictures, patted the horse and it's been happening since the 1950. Until we get to 2024 it's a popular tourist place now they don't realise it's a military barracks or the ceremonial entrance to Buckingham Palace. End of story.

As entertaining as it was in the past, I am actually relieved that he is more under control with the same guard on him every time. It honestly would be devastating if someone got really hurt and also if 'something happened' afterwards the horse bc of the ignorance of the tourists. The troopers are well aware of Ormonde's tendencies and if nothing was done to control him that would void the 'waiver' written on the sign.

I've worked in retail for years. We often encounter "service dogs"...some are your traditional guide dog..some are "assistance dogs"..hearing dogs for the deaf...medical assistance dogs etc. There is a category "emotional support dog"/ "companion dog". It's a bit of a mindfield to be honest..they are supposed to wear collars or coats to signify their "job". The young guy was correct you are not supposed to touch a service dog..but I think his main reason for his reaction was probably down to his autism..I have worked with children and adults with disabilities over the years. I think you were VERY polite as always and you just asked the question. I'm from the school of "if you don't know politely ask". Thank you for another great video John!!! xxx

I thought you might find this helpful. This is a brief but correct definition of Service Dogs. The link is included in case you wish to learn more. Note: an ESA (emotional support animal) does not have requirements or duties as does a Service Dog. In either case one should always ask before petting these animals. Many Service Dogs are not to be petted while working. Service Dogs can be used for a variety of health or mobility reasons. This info is from the U.S. ADAA. Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA. This definition does not affect or limit the broader definition of “assistance animal” under the Fair Housing Act or the broader definition of “service animal” under the Air Carrier Access Act. www.ada.gov/resources/service-animals-2010-requirements/

God what is WRONG with these people?? An armed police officer says “don’t stand on that circle on the ground” so they not only DO stand on it, but when told to get OFF it, they stand ON it whilst looking at him with a non comprehende expression, while the words slowly percolate thru whatever they use to keep their ears apart…and these are English speakers…I for one would seriously have laughed my arse off had one of them done an impromptu space launch. Poor old Ormonde😂He’s being held tight……someone on high has declared no more tourist snacks, and he’s NOT impressed. It has NOTHING to do with his “spirit” being “broken”. He was still TRYING ffs, he was just being “caught in the act” and pulled up, that’s all. Besides “spirit” doesn’t mean biting. Biting, while it’s perfectly acceptable in a working horse(they have a job and it isn’t to be your fantasy support animal), isn’t a good thing, and with so many idiots who don’t appear to care where their small children are as long as they get a “good photo” it’s really best that he’s restrained a bit because the poor troopers would be mortified if their Mount injured a small child, even if it’s not their fault. Wallace is a sweet lad……bit curious but very gentle….and certainly didn’t deserve the reaction of that woman in the tartan scarf who practically tripped over herself, because the horse “gasp”, looked at her…..🙄😳🤯 If you’re THAT scared of horses, don’t approach them……simple no? Btw is he black all over? Both front feet? Cos we haven’t had a shot of his feet yet 😉😂(just teasin John) Insofar as dogs go…….service animal or not, you do NOT touch a dog without the owners express permission, end of story. Service dogs should be clearly identified by their handler via a vest and NOT touched or spoken to or distracted. Notice the guy had ear plugs in, that scans for an autistic person. There was a lady last year who used to bring dogs into the area for de sensitisation, that were always wearing vests, I seem to recall.

John, I'm sorry the young man with the service dog was so abrupt about touching his service dog. In this country there are many organisations who train dogs to help with things like diabetes, which alert the owner that they are experiencing low sugar and will alert the owner in some way that they should take their medication for that reason. There are dogs that can alert their owner to get somewhere safe or get to ground level before a fit is about to happen. You may know about a guide dog for blind people, as they are well known for their work. I have a guide dog and on the whole assistance dogs shouldn't be touched, as it could put their owner in danger. I have a rule that if I am asked if a person can pet my dog, I try to use the encounter by politely explaining something about the work that my dog does and on the occasions when a blind person may need more help from a human for example a road that be too dangerous to cross without some help from a human. If you see a visually impaired person waiting to cross a road and the owner is holding the lead only and the harness handle is lying on the dog's back, they may need a hand. Always approach the person with an assistance dog on the opposite side to the dog so not to distract it. Charities need to educate the public more about the work more often in my opinion, although they are not very large charities and may not have the funds to be more recognised. Hope this helps. Don't let this experience put you off asking a service dog user about the work their dog does to help them, as the only way people will learn the rules is through education. From Debbie

they've been holding Ormonde's reins quite tight lately and giving him a little jerk of the reins when he seems like he might bite, therefore, giving him a "correction" (like i would do when training my dogs). he has been a very fast learner. i have heard you give a name to the other horse in a previous video, but don't remember what you said. all i know is i had named it "Eclipse" for myself and thought that was a better name than the one you told us that time. lol when the horses shake their heads in "yes" motion alot, i feel they are Metallica fans!! the ones that stand so still and quiet, i like to imagine they're telling themselves "i'm in my happy place"!! lol

Make note that there are NO garbage cans any where near Horse Guards so carry your own bag to put any cups or cans, Evan those items from somebody else , who dumb enough to just throw their stuff on the ground. I’m sure Horse Guards would appreciate it.

Wallace is an older horse by the looks of his teeth. He's between the ages of 10 and 15 yrs old. Ormande was being held by the Trooper pretty tight. He didn't have a loose rein like normal. Usually when he chastised tourists, he's on a very loose rein, but not today!! He's being held tightly, just like Wallace is. The horses names all start with the same letter of the alphabet to indicate the year they began their service The recent retirees range from H to O, with 14 years being the longest service of the group Horses that bite are a serious liability in the height of tourist season when that pavement gets very crowded Ormonde is on a final warning He’ll be found a new job, retired or loaned out

@@jenniferlehman326 the recently retired horses are Harvester, Incognito, Jaipur, Iago, Kilimanjaro, Kimberley, Knightsbridge, Legolas and Odin, so H to O. There are obviously younger horses who have vices, who might also get moved on if they don’t shape up The Mounted Division currently has far more horses than it needs and the Government is going to be looking at where they can make spending cut backs so more money can go into recruiting and covering the costs of increased spending on Troops directly involved in real defence Todays chaos in London is not good PR for the Ceremonial Mounted Division

Hello John. "Service Dogs" are also known as "companion dogs" in some countries and when trained to support the disabled, whether physically, visually, emotionally or for the Neurodiverse, i.e., Autism Spectrum Disorder; (mild, moderate or severe, which covers the whole range of neurodiversity....the mild end is no longer caled Aspergers), they ought to have a cover under their harnesses with a very visual message that reads "please don't talk to me I'm working" then folk would have been better informed. When they have their harnesses on they're 'on the job' and folk are asked not to distract them by touching or talking to them. It's the same as any dog working for the services, army, police, customs, cadaver dogs, emergency animals, postal 'sniffers', therapy dogs at airports for the nervous flliers etc, etc. The gentleman holding the harness had earplugs in so was likely very sensitive to noise.....he was also standing on his own, separate from thronging crowds so likely didn't like being touched or jostled. Being at KG's would have been very triggering for him. Well done on being so sensitive when you realised his predicament.

A service animal is not to be petted while on duty, John. Because all of its attention needs to be on its owner and the surrounding area.
@Kimberly-dn4mc
@Kimberly-dn4mc Ай бұрын
It's difficult to tell whether or not a dog is an actual "service dog", as there is no registration or paperwork required. Most service dogs go through training and are very relaxed and not bothered by crowds. Their attention is always on their human. *I'm not saying this guy is fibbing,* but he shouldn't need a color or chain that is that massive. That is meant to control a strong dog. He is also straddling the dog to keep it in control. Service dogs don't need 'controlling' if they are properly trained. Many people nowadays have 'emotional support pets' which can be any animal you can think of. Not only that, but anyone can buy a "service dog" harness.
@Paulette47
@Paulette47 Ай бұрын
Emotional support dogs should be trained in good citizenship and do therapy dog training there is a certification when training is completed Just because if your going to rely on a dog in situations you yourself aren’t comfortable in like going in public transport or in crowds they should be and even though some people prob do not do this training if their dog is their support dog it’s prob a good idea to respect that they are best left alone So the owner and the dog are not disturbed. I’d always respect someone saying don’t touch my dog it’s their dog after all.

@@Paulette47 🐕‍🦺 I agree Paulette, that service dogs shouldn't be touched at all. John wasn't sure what it meant that it was a service dog. He thought it meant the dog was a police dog, or an army dog. No harm, no foul. Have a good evening.

The law in the UK requires all Assistance Dogs to be trained (the handler can self train, or may be a member of ADUK and avail themselves of a qualified and experienced dog trainer) accredited, having been assessed through 3 different levels of training and registered with ADUK. The handler is registered and given a booklet with the handler's ID and a passport style picture of dog with handler. The booklet also contains current law (printed with references) and practices. I'm aware that not all countries or American States require accreditation and registration, but it IS a lawful requirement in the UK. If I'm asked by anyone about my dog's ID and registration, I'm very happy and proud to display it. My dog's working jacket, which was awarded after we successfully passed the 3 levels of training, also displays the logo of 'Dog A.I.D. who we were trained by.
