Kain is probably the most underrated final fantasy character in the series. He's my all time favorite, especially he was always my character of choice as a kid when playing multiplayer with my brother, while he played Cecil. Even as a kid his story captivated me, regardless of his surprising betrayed, he made an amazing comeback!

I feel very sorry for Kain. In Canon, Cecil Rosa and himself grew up together and had healthy relarionships together. The two boys became rivals and both developed feelings for the same girl. Rosa returns Cecil's feelings as does Cecil returns Rosa's feelings and Kain cant because his love is deemed unrequeted ((however you spell it)) and kept his feelings for her secret, which cause him to be brainwashed by Golbez, in the particular scene where he states "I wanted to keep you by my side" and it just pains me 17 years later ((After years)) he asks Ceodore who his parents are which are Cecil and Rosa and he knew it was too late. Then Dark Kain got loose and he accepted him that he did hate Cecil at one point and wanted Rosa to himself but he knew it wouldnt work. Why love someone who deeply loves someone else?! That aside, Kain is my fave character and if Rosa wont love him I WILL XD

Naw its actually kinda common as its a really good way to set up conflict. For example the rival in the anime Inuyasha is titular character's brother. They grew up as friends, but Inuyasha was given their's father most powerdul sword after their father's death, even though the brother was older and proved to be a more powerful fighter which lead to jealousy. Mind control just makes it that much easier to accept the once villian as a friend

@ScourJful He most definitely had feelings for Kairi that went past friendship in KH1. Riku made that race into a competition. If Sora won, he shared the fruit with Kairi. If Riku won, he did. Riku also enjoys taunting Sora a great deal. It does appear that by the time 358/2 days rolls around, Riku has either grown out of his feelings with Kairi, or has realized that Kairi only has eyes for Sora, and Sora just has to get his head out of his butt and realize that.
