I think because he was fighting for chaos at one point and changed sides. Why the plot chose to put Cloud, a hero, on that side is beyond me.

In 012 after Cloud's defeat in the hands of Chaos, I guess Sephiroth could not take it anymore without Cloud or his missing memories of Shinra. So... he killed himself to be brought back in the next cycle

For anyone still asking about this. Sephiroth did kill himself to test his theory. He realized the more the heroes of cosmos and chaos fight, the more memories they awaken, and that this battle cycles are eternal. Shinryu revives them each time they die and the cycle begins anwew. So, Sephiroth realizing how pointless all this was, decided to test if that was true by killing himself, even tho he knew that if the theory was correct he would lose the memories of testing it.

Play Dissidia 012 on the PPSSPP emulator on PC. It's still amazing. The graphics aren't the greatest, but you get used to it.

@@RandoPassingBy even without counting Crisis Core (which retconned a lot of things to make Zack's story more dramatic) how would Sephiroth ask Cloud how it feels to come back to his hometown if he didn't know him? He wasn't his mentor, true, but he did know him. No matter how shallow their connection was.

But here’s the thing: The original Squaresoft staff were all huge anime fans, and Masami Kurumada was in his heyday (Shiva’s signature move is called “Diamond Dust”, just like a Saint Seiya character’s.). They also got the artist who created Speed Racer to draw the FF characters to this day. This is more of a homage than anything.
