Great video! For the Jim/Kim question, why is it that we need to find their difference?
@FortBendTutoring

It’s because they’re running in the same direction, yet you want to know how far apart they are. The distance between them requires you finding one distance and subtracting the other from it.

KelliKnoxville Also K, I was having that problem at first, what changed was my patience with them, I learned to write down what he was saying, the charts and all. I mean all of his videos can be understood if you listen. They take time, and you need quiet time to do them, no distraction, no other movements in the room, utilize ms word, a "tangible" note pad, pen and pencil and get it pop'in.

Okay, I'm confused. if distance equals rate x time (d=r*t), then time would equal distance divided by rate (t=d/r), right? So, when you're filling in the "time" in the chart, wouldn't it be (180-x)/3 and (180+x)/2.4? However, I've done the math for that and it's -20 as opposed to 20. So, now I'm just plain confused because 20 is obviously the correct answer, but the formula for your time doesn't seem right to me. What am I doing wrong lol?
@FortBendTutoring
@FortBendTutoring 6 жыл бұрын

In question #2, how do you know if the distances should be subtracted and equated to 1/2? There are some distance word problems that add the two distances even if it's said that they are "____ miles apart" (Problem #2 also stated the "1/2 miles APART"). I get really confused if I should add or subtract the distances upon seeing "____ miles APART." I hope you can help me once again! Thank you so much

What about if you have a problem with actual times, for example "Agents Mulder and Scully are driving to Georgia to investigate "Big Blue," a giant aquatic reptile reported to inhabit one of the local lakes. Muleder leaves Washington at 8:30 am and averages 65 mph. His partner, Scully, leaves at 9:00 am following the same path and averaging 68 mph. At what time will Scully catch up with Mulder." Any help would be very appreciated
@FortBendTutoring
@FortBendTutoring 5 жыл бұрын
Begin by calculating the difference between the start times. Let (x) equal the time Mulder leaves then use (x - 0.5) for the time Scully leaves. Once (x) is solved for, add the amount of time to 8:30am to find out when Scully catches up with Mulder.

I keep gettig this kind of problems: "The Jones family drove to Disneyland at 50 miles per hour and returned on the same route at 40mph*. Find the *distance to Disneyland if the total driving time was *7.2 hours*". I know that the formula for Distance is D=rt, r being rate/speed and t being time. But I don't understand the wording itself. Someone gave me a hint: 50t = 40(7.2 - t) So I procedeed to solve for t like this 50t= 288 - 40t 90t=288 288/90=3.2 hours As you can obusly tell, that's time. So what do I do to solve for distance. Do I multiply by 40mph or 50mph? And if so, why? Help :/

3 • x represents the number of miles driven at the rate of “x” miles per hour for 3 hours. Since Jasmine drove an additional 6 hours at a different rate, the distance driven at her new speed is represented by 6 • (x + 30). Therefore, the total distance equation is 3 • x + 6 • (x + 30) = 540. Thanks for your kind words. I hope this helps!
